In episode 6 we keep it in the family! My mom and I call HER mom, Trudy (short for Gertrude) but I call her Gram. At 99 years young, as best we can tell she is the oldest ever Earwolf guest and nothing holds her back. From Sir-Mix-a-Lot to The Music Man, dog shows to stand-up shows, ice cream to bread pudding— we run the gamut. So thankful to get to record this special episode with Trudy (Diane DuVal’s mom).
We struck comedy gold with Baron’s mom Scharlotte. I think we found out where his timing comes from! In episode 5 Diane and Scharlotte get real about the struggles of single motherhood while pursuing careers. I think this episode shows the unique bond between a mother and the child she raises without a father figure, and how our moms' ability to push through dark times showed us how to find the lighter side of life as comedians. If you want to watch Baron’s stand-up I suggest his 2 Dope Queenz set on HBO or Conan. He’s also a talented actor seen in Corporate on Comedy Central, Grace and Frankie on Netflix and as himself in his documentary Fatherless on Amazon Prime.
Our 4th episode is here! And it gets international with Seth Rogen's mom, Sandy, all the way from Vancouver, British Columbia. Sandy gives us the low down on Seth's start in stand-up at just 14 years old, her love of cruises and what happens if you snack in Seth's kitchen. If you don't already follow her on Twitter, you should (@RogenSandy) and we'd be shocked if you don't know her son Seth. He's a writer, director, producer AND actor most known for: SuperBad, This Is The End, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, The Interview, 40-Year-Old Virgin (and about 40 more movies) and television like Black Monday, Undeclared and Preacher to name a few.
I gotta say we're starting to get the hang of this three-way phone bit we've decided to do; it doesn't hurt to have a bright, funny woman on the other end of the line! In this episode we learn where JVN came from in order to get where he is today, plus some great stories from his biggest fan (his mom). To find more Jonathan merely look to Instagram (@JVN) or Queer Eye on Netflix. He also has a podcast here called Getting Curious.
In our second episode we chat with Lydia about growing up in two worlds, raising her only child (who was a star in her eyes long before anyone else), and her connection with African art. Plus another Michigan connection! You may know Lydia’s son Sam Richardson from his role on VEEP as Richard Splett, or from starring in his Comedy Central series Detroiters, or perhaps you’ve seen him in movies like Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates, Spy and Ghostbusters to name a few.
Our first episode! We call Marilyn Bamford, the mom of stand-up comedian and actress Maria Bamford. You'll hear Diane and Marilyn's side of our mom jokes, what Maria was like as a kid, and the best advice for making it in comedy from the producer (mom) of a comedy legend. You can find more Maria on Netflix: her show (Lady Dynamite) and her comedy specials (Old Baby + the special special special!).
