We Talk Comics episodes

  • We Talk Comics LIVE at Calgary Expo 2016
We Talk Comics returns to the Calgary Expo! As the convention was winding down, Keith and Chris set up shop and had one last panel to close out the show. Joined by four Alberta comic creators, they had an engaging discussion for a loyal group of fans.
    Finn Lucullan
    Ben Rankel
    Eric Dyck
    Jeff Martin
The discussion ranges broadly as these creators work in radically different genres within comics. Finn draws an agendered space opera, Ben is writing and drawing a historical graphic novel, Eric does biographical shorts, and Jeff is currently doing an alien comedy for Heavy Metal online.
Kicking off the discussion with their favorite breakfast cereals, this unique panel of thoughtful creators talk about working in the webcomics space, how they build an audience base for their work, and telling Canadian stories.
Sit back with a bowl of kohlrabi and enjoy!
Our thanks to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo for hosting our panels for a third year.

  • Calgary Expo: Terminals Panel with Ryan Ferrier & Rove
Terminal Superheroes: Talking Indie Comics with Ryan Ferrier and Rove
What happens when a comics writer and tattoo artist create something together? Ryan Ferrier and Rove are here to show you just that.
Ryan Ferrier and Trevor “Rove” Jameus return to their first work, Terminals, after seven years. A lot has changed for them as creators and the panel gets into the challenges and excitement of volume 2.
Terminals was the first work from both creators and they were ‘learning on the job’ how to tell stories in the comic medium. Ryan and Rove talk about the work and practice they did to prepare for the original run.
Moderated by We Talk Comics co-host Keith, this panel covers the original series, the return to that world, and the creative process behind the series.
Terminals is now available on Comixology.

  • WTC 148: Mulvey, The Mummy & Me
It’s been a long time coming but finally Joe Mulvey, The Most Dangerous Man in Comics, is back on We Talk Comics to talk his latest project from ComixTribe, Mummy’s Always Right!
Joe was a regular on WTC in the early days so those of you who listened to his previous appearances won’t be surprised to hear he has a new comic out, but you may be surprised it’s geared towards kids, though adults are sure to love it too.
Joe covers a ton in this episode in his usual high energy and manically hilarious way like how Mummy’s Always Right got developed largely thanks to Joe’s young daughter Zoe, his upcoming book with ComixTribe head honcho and all around genius Tyler James called Counter Terror, why he thinks Dr. Doom is an overrated villain and tons of opinions on the state of American politics as they head towards a presidential election.
This is a great show, it Joe Muvey, nuff’ said!

A quick treat for all you listeners as our friend Chris Doucher of GeekNerdNet grabbed an interview with Jason Mehmel.
Jason is currently directing the play King Kirby for Sage Theatre in Calgary. The play was written by Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente about the life of the most influential comic book artist in the history of the medium, Jack Kirby, and runs from April 15th to April 23rd. We appreciate Chris sharing the audio of the interview with Jason, and we’ll be back with a full episode in a few days.

  • WTC 146: Batman v Superman v Brett Booth
    Who will win? The listeners!
Keith, Chris, and Mo are joined by DC Comics artist Brett Booth to talk about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
This is very much *not* a review show. The guys wanted to fanboy out a bit and talk about BvS and what the film means for the future of the DC movie universe.
Brett Booth, recently announced as the artist on Rebirth: Titans, is the biggest fan of Man of Steel on the planet. He and Keith spoke about that film last summer at the Phoenix Comic Con.
Brett returns to We Talk Comics to dig into BvS including its connections to Man of Steel, the Easter eggs, and the threads set up for Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League.
Wonder Woman was so amazing! We can all agree on that right?
As well, the gang looks into the distant future of the franchise for what could be down the road. The big question: Is this even meant to be an open-ended universe?
And who is Jena Malone playing anyway? Brett’s off-the-cuff idea would be the biggest mic drop in comics movie history!
Mo joins in despite not having seen the BvS yet (and it’s Mo, so stay tuned for the 2019 episode where he gets his thoughts in after seeing it).

  • WTC 145: Kickstarting The Panel One Movement
Panel One is a completely unique entity in the world of comics. It’s about comic creators, no matter their background or experience, coming together to help one another be better at making comics and spread the word about this amazing medium of entertainment.
Panel One itself has been around for just over 1 year, and on June 4th 2016 they will hold their first Comic Creator Festival.
A completely unique event dedicated to just the people that make comics in Calgary and area, it’s focused on the local books, the people who make them, and helping others get their start.

In order to make the best experience for both the creators and the people who wish to come down and meet them a Kickstarter Campaign is being held for the Festival. We Talk Comics host Mo has been working closely to help launch a successful campaign and he’s invited one of the collaborators and long time friend of the show Steven Charles Rosia to come on and discuss the campaign. Also joining them, along with regular WTC hosts Keith and Chris, is Calgary artist Nick Johnson of the popular Wolf Hands web comic to talk about what being part of a unique community like Panel One means.
A super fun show and please click the links in the post to the Kickstarter Campaign to help support comic creators fulfill their dreams!

  • WTC 144: Paul O’Connor For More Than 4 Seconds!

It’s a great day at We Talk Comics anytime we get a chance to catch up with our friend Paul O’Connor aka The Longbox Graveyard, but when Paul has 4 Seconds, the first comic book he’s written in many years, to promote it becomes one of the best days ever!
Paul gives Chris, Keith and Mo the amazing story of how he won the pitch contest at San Diego Comic Con held by Mark Waid and his Thrillbent crew, the inside details of the long creative process to get it right and the dilemmas Paul faced when he realized this means he actually has to write the darn thing. Plus how lucky Paul felt in getting veteran Karl Kesal as the artist. You also get to hear why 4 Seconds is free to read on the Thrillbent Website.
Paul is a great storyteller, as fans of his gone but not forgotten podcast here on WTP know, but if this is the first time you’ve listened to Paul you’re in for a treat.
Plus there’s plenty of discussion from the group on favorite Spider-Man writers, is the Deadpool movie a game changer and what, if anything, does it mean for Batman/Superman Dawn of Justice, Paul’s daily reviews of recent MARVEL # 1’s on his website and goings on at DC.
So give this episode a download for a surefire round of awesome!

  • WTC 143: Doing The Zub Step

When Jim Zub came on the show all he said was “Nothing’s off the table guys, except talking bad about people” and honestly, we love that.
A pure class act, Jim Zub entertains Brett, Chris, Keith and Mo with great stories of his time in the business. He has some incredible Comic Convention stories, a hilarious first meeting with a personal hero of his in Neil Gaiman, and relates tales of his mom and dad trying their best to understand exactly what he does for a living.
Of course we also talk his great work on his books Wayward, his preparation for the upcoming relaunch of the Winter Soldier Thunderbolts and he tells us why Samurai Jack, whose comic he worked on, is such a great animated series.
So sit back, pour yourself a beverage and have a laugh along with Jim Zub and the boys.

  • WTC Interview Special: The Jerry Ordway
Keith and Chris settled into this interview with Jerry Ordway so quickly we actually join it in progress and it takes a couple of minutes to announce the name of the show!
Jerry Ordway has been a favorite comic creator of the We Talk team for decades. With his new Kickstarter running, it was a perfect opportunity to talk about his career and his current serialized series Semiautomagic.
Jerry and writer Alex De Campi have been creating chapters of this horror comic for the pages of Dark Horse Comics Presents since 2014. Now you can get a trade paperback and more!
Semiautomagic follows the highs and lows (mostly lows) of occult investigator Alice Creed, an average girl from a bad part of town who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. A decade after the wrong turn that changed her life, she is who you call when magic ends up in murder.
But before we get to Semiautomagic, Jerry has a ton of stories to share from his time writing and drawing The Adventures of Superman. From the earliest days co-plotting with John Byrne to his decision to move on at The Death of Superman.

Jerry was part of the most controversial Superman story of all time, the Supergirl Saga! Also called “The Pocket Universe Story,” this three part story had Superman on an earth created by the Time Trapper that developed with only one hero, Superboy. The 1988 story culminated in Superman choosing to execute 3 Kryptonian villains rather than risk them getting to his earth and destroying it.
Does Superman kill? If he does, what happens next? The Superman creators were asking that question 25 years before Man of Steel hit the screen!
We also cover a wide range of Jerry Ordway’s work including Power of Shazam, Infinity Inc, All Star Squadron, and Wlidstar!
And we find out Jerry is quite a fan of the DC TV shows, and has some thoughts on the way Supergirl has been developing a character he co-created, Cat Grant.
Sit back, bit into that Big Belly Burger, and enjoy 100 minutes of the best comic talk going!
The Kickstarter for Semiautomagic runs to February 29, 2016. Support it now!
