  • WTC 158: Byrne After Reading
We Talk Comics sometimes has controversy, sometimes argument, sometimes soapboxing. Not this week. This episode, the team gets together to enjoy their shared love of a comic creator whose work helped shape super-hero comics from the Big 2 for a generation before again breaking new ground on creator owned properties.
Few comic creators have had such a far-reaching impact on the super-hero genre as John Byrne. One of the first superstar artists, Byrne set the standard for the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and so many other books, and his work continues to be drawn upon today.
Mo, Brett, Chris, and Keith sit down with a list of their all-time favourite John Byrne comics to spark conversation and reminisce about this writer/artist and erstwhile Canadian whose work has meant so much to them over the decades.
Byrne’s Fantastic Four is widely considered the gold standard for the super-hero family. Despite several attempts to replace his 1986 reboot, Byrne’s take on Superman has once again returned to the lead role in the DC Universe. Even Byrne’s relatively short run on West Coast Avengers is still being mined for plot material decades later.
The guys have very different lists (well, mostly different) and we hope you will be not only following along but writing up a bit of a shopping list. This episode is a celebration of the work of John Byrne from his early Marvel work to some books he has done much more recently.
This episode was brought to you by the letter F, the number 4, and the algebraic equation Doomsday+1.

  • WTC 157: Joe Eisma, The Morning After
In episode WTC 154: What’s The Story Morning Glories the guys broke down the first few trade paperbacks of the popular Image Comics series. What they didn’t expect was Morning Glories artist Supa Joe Eisma to not just hear about the show, but to actually listen to it!
Joe asked to come on the show and respond to the guys comments and of course We Talk Comics is happy to have him on.
Joe explains some of his early challenges, working with Nick Spencer, the complicated plot of Morning Glories and some fun topics like his favourite bands and hanging out with our old pal Joe Mulvey.
This is a high energy, candid and Supa (Joe) fun episode so give it a listen and make sure to tell others about WTC… After you finish reading Season 2 of Morning Glories that wrapped up in issue #50.

  • WTC 156: All Killer No Filler
Hey ho and here we go, We Talk Comics once again is on the air and in your ear and this time the show is going to go a little darker as your hosts explore serial killers in comics.
Sin-Eater, Torso, Sam & Twitch, From Hell and Scourge of the Underworld are among the serial killers in question, and the guys take a special look at one of the most divisive books ever to come across the desks of your hosts… Nailbiter!

  • WTC 155: Why So Serials?
It’s another We Talk Comics with Brett, Keith, Chris and Mo and this episode promises to be extra fun as the guys hop in the phone booth and go back to the 1940’s to talk about 3 old movie serials that were the first comic book blockbuster films!
Adventures Of Captain Marvel – Chapter 7 Human Target

    Batman (1943) Episode 11 “A Nipponese Trap”
    Captain America: 1944 Serial – #10
It’s great and as always hilarious discussion on a type of film making that no longer exists but whose influence is still felt today with great observations and tons of interesting facts on the 3 episodes your hosts randomly watched for the podcast.
Plus Brett, Keith and Chris do Mo a favour and watch something called The Final Deletion because he just needed their opinion of this video that has gone viral, and the guys take time to remember SCTV and the genius of it’s their Six Gun Justice movie serial parody as part of the fake network’s hilariously inappropriate children’s program Happy Hour with Happy Marsden.

  • WTC 154: What’s The Story Morning Glories
WTC host Keith has long been a fan of the Nick Spencer / Joe Eisma Image Comics Shawdowline series Morning Glories, and with Brett recently starting down the rabbit hole of mysteries held down at the Morning Glories Academy he felt it was time for Chris and Mo to give the series a read and experience the wonder of this excellent comic.
With it being written by Nick Spencer it gives the guys an excuse to talk a little more about Captain America: Steve Rogers and illogical reaction some people had towards the book while also discussing if Nick Spencer handled the backlash the best way he could.
From there it’s an in depth look at Morning Glories with discussion on the characters, plot, twists, turns, visuals and writing that makes up one of the most unique experiences the hosts have ever experienced in the world of comic books, and as usual there’s lots of laughs to be had along the way so give it a whirl! (WARNING – Some Strong Language on This Episode)
Also, if you wish to do a little prep for listening on NEXT WEEK’S show the subject will be 3 1940’s comic book themed movie serials.
    They are:

Adventures Of Captain Marvel – Chapter 7 Human Target

    Batman (1943) Episode 11 “A Nipponese Trap”
    Captain America: 1944 Serial – #10

  • WTC 153: No Expiry Date
Another We Talk Comics with Brett, Chris, Mo and Keith hits the air, this time sub titled No Expiry Date! Why is it called that? No idea really, sometimes the guys just say something and like the way it sounds!
On this episode the guys discuss if Action Man #1 lives up to legacy of a property being marketed as Great Britain’s answer to GI Joe. They also talk Cryptocracy #1 and find out what a Bug Bear is, look at Mae #2 and the evolution of Gene Ha’s art over the years and talk about issue #2 of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas bringing up discussion about the novel and film as well.
All this plus some talk about Captain America: Steve Rodgers, the internet’s reaction to the book and people’s passion or perhaps craziness regarding their favorite characters and the way they want stories told about them.
So give it a listen. We’re not promising it’s the best and funniest podcast you’ll hear this week, but it is.

  • WTC 151: Still Going
Chris, Keith, Mo and Brett are back on as the march towards the 5th Anniversary of We Talk Comics is on.
This episode the guys discuss 4 books.
    DARK HORSE COMICS PRESENTS #23
    TRANSFORMERS #54
YOGA HOSERS: A SUNDANCE SUPER SPECIAL – WHEN COLLEEN’S COLLIDE (warning much profanity because of this book)
    DEADEYE: BOUND IN BLOOD
This leads to some great talk about anthology books past and present and if they still work, licensed property comics and the guys fit in a few minutes talking Rebirth.
Lots of fun and laughs as usual, so give it a shot! After all there’s a reason WTC has made it this far.

  • WTC 150: Season 2
Mo, Brett, Keith and Chris are back to the old ways with a new format once again as they launch Season 2 of We Talk Comics.
WTC is going weekly talking a few (good?) books and a couple of news items or other things on the hosts minds.
This week the guys discuss Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy #1, Star Trek #58, Gold Key: Alliance #3 and 4001 A.D. Bloodshot #1 (leading to a classic WTC on running gag) as well as some thoughts on the Preacher TV show on AMC, Ninjak and Comixology Unlimited on this, the debut of Season 2. It’s just like Season 1, but now with more 2.. An absolute blast.

  • WTC 149: Calgary Expo tales
Keith and Chris are just about recovered from the festival of comics, fun, and screamers that is the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo!
Keith and Chris take a quick sidetrip to talk about the first shared movie universe – the Universal Monsters! Then it’s on to some convention stories from the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.
Keith got a few minutes with friend of the show Jim Zub to talk about his new take on Thunderbolts and the research he did to prepare for what is now a brand-name legacy at Marvel. We then move to his up-coming Image book Glitterbomb. Also check out Jim’s on-going creator-owned series Wayward.
Next up is Keith’s interview with Charles Soule. Charles writes Daredevil and several Star Wars series, but in this interview they focus on his passion project, Letter 44. A new president takes office, only to find there is a mysterious alien craft in our solar system and a team has already secretly been sent to investigate. Charles talks about what is coming up to follow the excitement of World War 3! Charles also has a couple of words about Poe Dameron and Strange Attractors.
Thanks to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo for another great year of comics, celebs, and great memories.
