The Somerton Man now has a probable name—Carl “Charles” Webb—but the Tamám Shud code, his death, and his reason for being on an Adelaide beach remain unsettled.

On December 1, 1948, a well-dressed man was found dead against the seawall at Somerton Beach. He carried no identification, labels had been removed from his clothing, and his fingerprints and dental records produced no match. Investigators later found a suitcase at the railway station and a tiny scrap torn from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám bearing the words “Tamám Shud,” or “finished.” A copy of the book connected to the scrap contained a phone number and a sequence of letters that inspired decades of spy theories.

This episode follows the original inquest, possible poisoning, the unidentified nurse linked to the phone number, the disputed code, and the many candidates eliminated over 73 years. It then turns to the genetic-genealogy work of Professor Derek Abbott and Colleen Fitzpatrick, who announced in 2022 that DNA from hair in the plaster death mask pointed to Melbourne electrical engineer Carl Webb.

Case update: that identification is strongly supported but, as of July 2026, still awaited a formal determination from South Australia’s coroner while police prepared their report. Even if the name is confirmed, the cause of death and the meaning of the clues remain open questions.

Career criminal Gus Miller steals a dead man’s identity to reach a blind uncle’s safe and the half-million-dollar inheritance inside.

Tom Reed meets Miller on the road and offers him an audacious proposition. Reed must collect money from his estranged uncle Walter at White Oaks, the family’s gloomy Pacific Coast estate, but a bad heart may prevent him from completing the trip. When Reed dies in the car, Miller changes clothes with the corpse and arrives during an electrical storm pretending to be the long-absent heir.

The masquerade appears perfect. Uncle Walter has not seen Tom in years and is blind; the household expects the nephew; and a childhood fiancée named Margaret is due to arrive. Yet White Oaks contains more than one false identity. A blown floor safe, another body, and the old man’s strangely precise movements force Miller to reconsider who is deceiving whom and whether the dead Tom Reed has guided him into a trap.

“The Corpse Laughs” is a vintage crime-horror mystery of greed, impersonation, inheritance, and shifting identities. A jagged coastline, remote mansion, stolen clothes, family fortune, and corpse left by the roadside build toward the discovery that the cleverest thief at White Oaks may not be the man telling the story.

Two lifelong friends climb and camp deep in the woods, only to discover that an enormous dog-snouted creature is stalking their fire from just beyond the trees.

Adrian and the narrator expect a quiet backwoods adventure near a cliff. Instead, an eight-foot, hair-covered beast begins circling the campsite, testing their defenses, and forcing them into a fight neither understands. When Adrian is injured and later disappears from a climbing rope, the search leads halfway down the cliff to a hidden cave filled with bones and piles of bloody clothing belonging to other missing hikers.

What follows is a survival-horror pursuit through forest, rock, and darkness. The creature is powerful enough to tear through camp and attack a moving car, but its most frightening advantage is patience: it knows the terrain, controls the cave, and has hunted people here before. Rescue means entering its home, while escape means reaching a distant road before it closes the distance.

A murdered man, cryptic notes, and a fictional victim called “Liquid Matthew” collided in Hialeah, Florida, creating a true-crime mystery stranger than its nickname.

On December 6, 1983, two joggers found Francisco Patiño Gutiérrez dead in a parking area. Heavy rain complicated the scene and threatened to wash away evidence. Then investigators discovered a sealed note attached to a nearby “No Dumping” sign. Its rhyming instructions appeared to promise a trail of clues, another victim, and a horrifying death involving boiling oil.

Police followed the puzzle and asked the Miami Herald to publish the notes, prompting the headline that gave the case its enduring name. The apparent killer’s game then collapsed into coincidence: a church employee explained that the clues belonged to a canceled Halloween murder-mystery scavenger hunt and had been left around the neighborhood before Gutiérrez was killed.

Terrifying & True separates that macabre accident from the homicide investigation. The episode follows Gutiérrez’s reported connection to a failed cocaine-smuggling operation and the theory that losing drugs and money brought retaliation from organized traffickers. The notes were explained, but the person who killed Gutiérrez was not. It is a case where the most theatrical clue led nowhere—and the less sensational criminal motive remained beyond prosecution.

A writer hiding at a Chesapeake Bay lighthouse sees a gigantic smile in the sky—and believes the impossible face is draining away his life.

Bill Fenchurch has separated from his wife Grace and retreated to Lighthouse Point, where his retired sea-captain uncle Wilbur tends the light. Bill’s letter asks Grace to come quickly because he believes he is dying. When she arrives by boat, she is shocked by his physical decline and by his insistence that a vast, bodiless smile is watching from beyond the lighthouse window.

Wilbur can see the shape too, but he refuses to accept Bill’s supernatural explanation. Grace must decide whether the image is an omen, a symptom of creative exhaustion, or something connected to the dangerous rocks and boats moving through the bay. The more Bill watches it, the weaker he becomes, and his certainty turns the isolated lighthouse into both a refuge and a trap.

Written by G. Frederick Lewis, “The Smile” combines cosmic dread, maritime suspense, and psychological mystery. Its estranged couple, Chesapeake Bay setting, red sailboat, jagged rocks, and enormous face in the sky create a story about fear’s power to consume a life—and the desperate search for a physical answer to an impossible vision.

Sheila Baker meets elderly Otis Thornton aboard Delta Flight 752, where his tragic family story leads toward a plane crash that refuses to end.

Flying from Atlanta to Seattle, Sheila expects little more than an uncomfortable economy seat. Instead, the kind stranger beside her recounts his life with his beloved wife Ella, their daughter Marilyn, and their lost son, little Otis. His memories of grief, guilt, and choices made to protect his family become increasingly vivid as the Boeing 757 encounters violent turbulence over the Cascade Mountains.

Oxygen masks fall, the pilots lose consciousness, and Otis hears a baby crying farther up the cabin. Moving through panicked passengers, he finds a child who should exist only in the past. Six members of the Robison family were murdered inside a Lake Michigan cottage in 1968, leaving Good Hart with a case many investigators believed they solved—but never proved in court.

Richard and Shirley Robison had brought their four children—Richie, Gary, Randy, and Susan—to Summerset, their seasonal cottage at Blisswood Resort. They were killed on June 25, but the secluded home was not entered until July 22, after neighbors reported a terrible odor. Investigators found evidence of a .22-caliber rifle, a .25-caliber pistol, and a hammer attack.

Terrifying & True follows the investigation from Northern Michigan to Richard’s advertising business near Detroit. Attention centered on employee Joseph Scolaro III, who had access to the family’s travel plans and was suspected of embezzling from the company. Ballistics evidence, financial records, inconsistent statements, and other circumstantial links led detectives to view him as the sole perpetrator, but the prosecutor declined to authorize charges.

Scolaro died by suicide in 1973 as investigators again considered the case. The file remained inactive without a trial or verdict, creating a lasting divide: officially, no one was convicted; privately and publicly, several later investigators and prosecutors said they believed the murders had been solved. This episode explores both the evidence against Scolaro and why legal certainty never followed.

A young woman rebuilds the same sandcastle every day on the beach where her two-year-old brother drowned ten years earlier.

Jeremy Denham is a retired teacher and recent widower who turns to birdwatching after losing his wife. At an island sanctuary, he meets Maureen Hart building an elaborate castle with turrets, battlements, and a moat. She returns to the same place day after day but never adds a flag. Her ritual intrigues both Jeremy and Ralph Poole, the sanctuary’s poet caretaker.

Maureen’s mother has tried to bury the family’s past. Her little son Kenny drowned in shallow water while Maureen stepped away from their sandcastle, and her husband disappeared from the family soon afterward. The mother and daughter never truly mourned together. A discussion of young shearwaters abandoned before migration, followed by a night of watching birds cross the full moon, begins to expose the loss Maureen has repeated without being able to name.

Written by Elspeth Eric, “The Sand Castle” is a melancholy psychological drama about childhood guilt, bereavement, memory, and the rituals people create when grief remains unfinished. The beach, migrating birds, vanished father, and castle erased by the tide give the story an uncanny atmosphere without losing sight of its human wound.
