I'm cleaning out and rebuilding my music space completely which is really hard but also very interesting so I feel like I don't have a lot of time and inspiration for writing music but I just have to power through.

As is the theme this summer, here's a track that I built on the m8 and hope to add some more guitar.  I have some ideas that I just wasn't able to record yet, but time is getting short.  I think at the very least I have a good starting point on this one.

Wanna get some fuzzed out guitar on here for sure.

Let's do some Irish trad! But like, obscene.

I was sort of stuck for what to use for cover art this week...and then Dr Frog gestured at the wall behind me. Oh yeah! Let's just take a pic of the instruments I used this week. Tenor banjo, bodhran, bones, pennywhistle, guitar (FrankenGuitar) and upright bass (Ol' #12!). My MIDI and synths and noise are getting lonely. Soon, my precious...

So, neon liminal is partially to blame(?) for this track, waaaaay back in week 8. From my post on Nasty (paraphrasing a bit):

Although we had thought we would swap Nasty challenges back in April. Sometimes Life hates making music.  :)

What makes this particularly funny is the somewhat bardic nature of my reply is in contrast to the expected sleazy rock we were going to do....but it rather fits with the tracks the Dr and I have been doing lately. This rather has a sense of humor, nasty with a wink and a nudge.

This song has been living in our lyrics book for about six years. The song is a co-write, but the melody and lyrics are primarily Doctor Frog's. Let's let her talk about it!

This song was inspired by a collaborative writing session sometime around 2020. Bridgerton had just come out, and it was sweeping the country with Regency era romance. You know, society drama, social pining, and marriage as the goal. As we were pinging topics back and forth, the idea of writing about an anti-heroine using (very) old euphemisms for sex came up. We were laughing hysterically about the phrases that surfaced in our searching (see “grope for trout in hidden streams”), and a song tumbled out.

Fast forward to this summer where I actually have time to write music with Paisleyfrog. We talked about collaborating on some trad music, a favorite of both of us. As we were thinking about last week’s offering, I remembered this week’s lyrics (yes, I do keep everything organized so I can find our past work). A quick hunt in the lyrics document, a bouncy melody, and a raunchy sing later, and this song came to life.

This piece uses a common trad strategy of offering two songs in one, usually with the second song as the instrumental interlude. “I Ain’t No Gothic Heroine” combines with “Boys of Blue Hill” to make “The Nasty Set.”  The congruence in the song title is a lovely irony!

Sometimes a song needs to wait until the right moment to come out, and this year's Weekly Beats with all the Early Music we've been working on was exactly the right time :)

I went through the setlist of my old Celtic band and found Boy of Blue Hill - a hornpipe that fit well with our new melody. Once again we had to work on key a bit - The Doctor likes F, but Boys of Blue Balls...um....Hill...is in D. Easy solution: play the whistle part on an F pipe and I can use the same fingerings (heh huhhehehe huhheh). I didn't initially know it on banjo, but I don't play in F much there. Just cheated and used a capo so I could use the finger positioning I'm used to.

These tunes have a really prominent triplet feel (as is evidenced in the bodhran part), but they're counted in four as these are both hornpipes - the main distinction is the heavy bounce on the eighth notes. A traditional tune counted in 12/8 is called a Slide, and is a much lighter feel. Hornpipes are heavy clogging songs, while jigs, slip jigs and slides (hehe hehe heh) are much lighter.

Other instruments - decided on a dance band/céilí style, which is what my old band largely was. Thus the bass! I also pulled out bodhran and the bones (heehhuhheu heheh hhuheeh). Bones are a percussion instrument played like spoons, and originally were literal bones (mine are wood...hehhe huh heheh...wood.) I liked the percussion changeup in the middle, and also the bones played a bit with that clogging feel.

Wanted a bawdy, sweaty bar singalong feel for this, so I used a few clips from freesound.org. The Doctor and I went back and forth on just how much to add. My initial mix had a LOT more audience sound, but she found that distracting. I pulled it back, and we ended up with this mix. It was actually a little contentious for a bit. :)

Sitting down Friday night without a particular thought in my head, I found myself moving a double stop around the G and B strings, leading me to working on something outside of my typical key centers. (Maybe it's Bb major, but I don't spend a lot of time on Bb in this piece. I'll have to work it out.) Pretty quickly this seemed like more unified material than some pieces, and the sections flowed together fairly quickly. The order in which the parts appear here, is pretty much the order in which I wrote them, and there wasn't a lot of massaging in the editing.

Three tracks of PureSalem Mendiola (old version): neck pickup (center), bridge pickup (right), both pickups (left). No pedals, just straight into the UA Volt, due to laziness. There's the usual convolution reverb send from each channel, and the usual compression/eq/limiting on the stereo mix.

The title comes from NY's Morrow Mountain, with an elevation of 653m.

Was supposed to do something entirely different, with qp again. But I had this thing in my head and well, here we are. It's something different from what I usually post. Parts of it are freestyled, while others were more predefined.

It's not perfect and there's a lot i'm unhappy with. I fucked up a few time which messed with the vowel symmetry. I tried to do more takes but I just couldn't find the same energy and tone. However, as I've come to find out, sometimes freedom lies in imperfection and so this is my first one-take with all it's faults laid bare.

I started this literally yesterday with the full intent for this to be a shitty sound design session. My friend that is currently living overseas in Vietnam sent me a clip of her singing with guitar that sounded so beautifully recorded for just an iphone mic compared to some other clips she has sent me. I recently went through my old recordings of me and her playing clarinet and saxophone songs together from college, so she gets a double feature here. Outside of the breaks, I think there are only 3 samples used here? It was difficult to make all the transitions work because of the limitations, but man the ideas were just flowing out of me.

I also tried REALLY hard to experiment with ducking sounds, which is new to me. It was cool to hear how the mix immediately started opening up once I started compromising on how I wanted sounds to enter the space. The vocal track in the big sections fading in and out was initially always going, and that was no good for the mix.

Meets people, sorry for the length! I tried to be more considerate to letting sections live longer / transition into new ones. I am hoping that makes for a less jarring experience that grooves for longer.

This is another experiment featuring the beautiful vocals of a kind girl who was humming and singing into my Zoom recorder last year. I added some OP-1 bells, pedal effects, and a touch of timeless tape wow and flutter. This piece came together while I was completely exhausted after finishing my shift at the clinic this morning.

As always, another week another beat, I hope whoever listens enjoys. Made this one in a day so some of the ideas are a bit rushed. I want to add more to the end, it feels like it ends pretty abruptly. Though throughout the whole track I think is has some nice groove and movement to it. Most of the sounds in this were patches I made in Serum 2, U-HE Diva, as well as some U-HE Hive for the arps.
