  • Week 27 - Tom Foolery - Another day has dawned
Very much went into this feeling uninspired. I had nothing in mind, and on a whim, asked a friend for inspiration. They told me about a feeling they had while taking the dog they are dog-sitting for a morning walk. I put the guitar in DADAAD tuning and tried to capture that.
This week has been busy, as always, although I think I did a bit better at making some more time and space for myself? Time for reading. Time for getting my thoughts onto paper. I spent the week craving some sort of reset - I have a trip away planned next weekend so I reminded myself that good things come to those who wait. I felt tired to my bones this weekend, and last night I turned my alarm off and just let myself sleep. I ran along the bay and put my feet in the icy cold water. It's a little adventure and a little reset and that's all I need. I made sticky date pudding for a friend and had some big honest conversations. We watched Chicken Run. I realised this week so many of my fantasies (where I could live for example) involve having other people around - would I still be willing to do these things alone? I found this thought too big so I sat down in my new beanbag and read a book for a while. Good things come to those who wait. Good things come to those who are willing to work towards something and know that it will take time.
Immensely proud of everyone for making it into the second half of weeklybeats! Looking forward to catching up on all the tracks that I have missed as soon as I can <3
    the air floats down
    I feel it's still
    it rests upon my skin
    I feel it's chill
    it settles on the ground
when no one makes a sound
    it's you and me alone
    the city sighs
    lovers stay in bed
    the sleepy streets roll over
    the sky is turning red
    another day has dawned

  • Week 27 - walternormand - applie pie
Another ableton-pretending-to-be-an-analog-4 track. Quite fun to jam with ableton!
Title was a typo but we live on :)

  • Week 27 - rdomain - Reprieve From the Outside World
Here's another recording I've utilised from a young student of mine.  He'd be around 7-8 years old and is diagnosed with a gamut of various behaviour issues.  He loves his guitar lessons though and music in general so I've also taught him piano for when he forgets his guitar.  This features a piano recording I did with him.
It was a winters day with heavy rains and other children playing nearby so all the 'lofi' noise is the rain, wind and the odd child playing.  It was also recorded via the internal speaker of my laptop so some extra texture also.
The piano is totally improvised by this student and we'd been learning chord and interval shapes so it captures such a musical quality. I was impressed with his restraint and listening because a year ago there would have been chaotic random hits etc so much improvement and so cool to see/hear.
The recording was under a minute so I recorded it into my OP-1 Field tape machine, slowed it to half speed with a bit of reverb.  I then mixed that back into the original recording, applied a touch of delay to the original recording and looped it twice to match the half speed tape version.

  • Week 27 - jegasus - Flying into a Hurricane
    ### Lore
I'm sure you've heard of them cloud seeders, right? Shit, that job is easy compared to what we do! They just go up there when conditions are peachy and have a fun little jaunt in the sky. Us cloud sanders? We go in when shit's at its worst: thunderstorms, hurricanes, typhoons, you name it. We fly up in there and drop sand on the clouds to break 'em up. It just makes things safer and more manageable on land, you know? So yeah, we fly nose first into some pretty gnarly situations. And not to mention cases where there's just a sky monster hiding in them clouds! But no matter, we take those out, too. Gives us an excuse to use our favorite toys, the laser turrets. Just another day's work is all.
    ### Production details
This one came about super quickly and almost by chance! I hadn't set aside time to make music this week and I knew I would be out all day on Sunday, so this started coming together on Friday evening. Luckily, I was able to find some time then and bang the core pieces out.
I started by creating an unstoppable-sounding bass kick and thought "hell yeah, this sounds like a boss fight" and just kept going down that track trying to keep the intensity up. I can't say why, but I'm really proud of the little motif of the main bendy lead on this one.
As usual, this just has one "movement" or chord progression (if you can even call it that) but I think it doesn't feel or sound all that repetitive, at least not to me. The idea for the lore and story here came from the theme for this round of the M8 Community Jam, which was "Cloudcover". This felt like it could be the soundtrack for one of those top-down bullet hell shooters where your ship is an old timey plane with inexplicably advanced laser beams, and where the pilots need to fly into storm clouds to do crazy stunts and fight monsters.
All of the voices in the song are the M8's internal WAVSYNTH with the exception of the bass kick, which is MACROSYNTH. No samples used and what you hear is the direct render from the M8 pushed through Audacity to generate an MP3.
    ### Diary and chatter
Howdy, folks! Have I recently mentioned how much I value places like the M8 Community Jams and Weekly Beats? These little nooks are fucking awesome. Thank you all so much for listening, and doubly so for taking time to comment. These are such special communities. It's so incredible that we have such a massive pool of talent posting IMPRESSIVE work on a regular basis, and I feel bad that I don't listen to (or comment on) enough of it. Anyways, in this absolute sea of greatness, thank you for stopping by this weird little corner of mine and being so kind. M8CJ and WB are such treasures. They (and the Dirtywave Discord in general) are, by far, my favorite internet spaces. Thank you for being amazing.
Peace be with y'all, friends <3

  • Week 27 - rjlmrq - 27 Hemifamily
Wow, week 27 means we've made it halfway through the year. That is amazing -- thank you weeklybeats organizers!
Hemifamily explores a 17-note scale called 17-hemifamity. So I just noticed I made a mistake: the name is actually hemifamity and not hemifamily. Oops. Too late now.

  • Week 27 - angellis - MMXXVI - XXVII
More fun with ambient drone. The light piano sound is routed out to an delayed fx channel with Replika XT, lightly saturated with one of my fav plugs from Softube = Saturation knob. That's what I like. One big knob.
