Here's this version - piano and spoken word w/ lyrics
Here's the piano solo version too. In case you don't wanna be reminded of the topic of the lyrics, you can listen to the piano solo and imagine it's about whatever else you want.
PROCESS and THOUGHTS
The composition was done last night (out of an impro I didn't record) and today I did a one take impro around it. It's a theme based on a pedal F with Bb-C Eb-F in every octave, then I change the bass but keep the same arpeggio thingy. It's very loose, and there is no particular groove. I also performed a version of it earlier today on acoustic piano at the dancing place, it was fun!
Once I had the instrumental, I wanted to make it about something more, so I tried to write lyrics about anti-fascism, killing people in the streets ... etc. I don't feel so good about the lyrics, not because it's not good to say fuck fascism in various ways, but because it's not a very coherent message that can really be received by someone who disagrees with it; and if I make a protest song that only the people who already agree will be receptive to, then what the fuck am I doing? This lack of a clear idea that I wanna transmit is why I don't like the lyrics right now... I feel like there must be a better way to do this, probably need more time to really develop the lyrics. Also, it's not only about the US situation, altho it is definitely a big part of it. It's also about Russia invading Ukraine, Israel bombing their neighbours, and other warmongering nations attacking people who don't deserve to be attacked. So it all weighs on my head while trying to write it, you can hopefully understand why I can't be too coherent about it.
It's a struggle and don't you think I haven't been thinking about these issues while I was making fuckin "flower boy" and other fun lil songs, it's just that I can't cope with this global situation and I need to escape and music is my way to escape.... and I fuckin hate that they are invading my happy place but what can I do about it.
Anyway hope you enjoy, and sorry to invade your happy place with it too, but it's important to not fall into apathy.
› Lyrics‹ Lyrics
We need an uprising
or we need to play their fucking game.
We need to choose with our money
and hit them where it hurts:
their pockets.
Killing people in the streets
is not ok.
We cannot let ourselves feel apathy.
Apathy is a good friend of
the evil-doers.
Killing people in the streets
is not ok.
What the hell?!
I can't be wrong about this one!
People afraid of other people,
they think they're coming to get their cookie.
Are you fucking kidding me?
Fuck your cookie!
Lies are so powerful
and the truth is so fragile.
Lies are infinite,
the truth is only one;
the truth endures,
but it is really vulnerable
to apathy.
Killing people in the streets
is not ok,
it's not ok!
We cannot let ourselves feel apathy
it's not ok.
The streets are full of snow
and ice.
The streets are so cold,
but the streets are not full of apathy.
The streets used to be beautiful
before they started killing people there.
Killing people in the streets
is not ok.
Killing people in the streets
is not ok,
it's not ok.
We need an uprising
for those of us who are too scared to fight with our fists,
who would rather love and sing and look at the stars.
We have many alternatives to destroying each other for money
and throwing each other in cages.
We don't really need that much money
and we have plenty of everything to share.
Those of us who know exactly what I'm talking about
we try to show the rest of you all the time,
but for some reason it is not yet clear enough,
our message gets distorted,
and you think we're crazy,
crazy to imagine
that we could be making love in the streets
instead of killing each other.
We could be dancing in the streets
instead of killing each other.
We could be making food and eating in the streets.
Nice big pot of curry for the whole block with a lot of nice baked bread.
We have enough for everybody.
Some of you don't believe it but we do.
We need an uprising.
