  • Week 19 - walternormand - Caged
This is a Tom Foolery b-side, and a peek behind the curtain.
A voice note improvisation I recorded, which is often how a lot of my song ideas come to life.
This one nearly got forgotten, but there are some improvised lyrics in here that I like, so I wanted to upload it here as a little time capsule almost.

  • Week 19 - WahSp - Old
I am still in my Tidal Cycles phase and having lots of fun. This might stick.
This turned out as a bit of a jam. I had something more structured in mind but ran out of time (I had my birthday yesterday, family from Italy over, and some sleepless nights this week). I didn't really have a good idea yet for how to build this jam up and break it down. You will hear it, because some transitions are awkward. Also, there may be some hiccups in the recording along the way. I have a new (second hand) laptop and audio interface for which I am still figuring out the best settings. However, I still have visitors from Italy over and therefore only limited time to isolate myself :), so this will have to do.
I also consider my tracks these week mostly as studies - me getting to know Tidal Cycles better, working with plugins that I haven't touched in ages, and trying out different ideas.
I hope it is enjoyable anyway.

  • Week 19 - Tom Foolery - Angel in the stone
    Big week.
A few stressful things at work which all worked out (no pun intended), but ultimately the feeling of impostor syndrome is easily exacerbated by things not going to plan. Everyone there is very supportive and understanding though, which I am very thankful for.
Whilst driving down the street, I saw someone walking out of a coffee shop that I thought I would never see again in my life. It was surreal to see them standing there, moving exactly how I remember them moving. Surreal to know they exist in the same world as me. Lots to unpack there.
I went and watched a documentary on Jeff Buckley at the cinema. It was beautiful, it was devastating. I have been listening to him a lot this week, and I can't believe how easily he can transport me away with just a guitar and his voice. Timelessly angelic music.
I've been on quite a few lovely runs and bike rides. Caught up with friends. Went to a market that I had never been to and had a blast! It was like being in a different city! Got an absolute score of cheap vegetables, which have already been used in two great dinners and counting. In a busy cafe, I shared a table with a stranger so that we wouldn't have to stand - coincidentally we had ordered the exact same things and we had a lovely conversation.
I went to a free performance today at the local town hall in their gallery. I was nearly moved to tears by her rendition of a Julia Jacklin song (if I ever see Julia Jacklin live I will be a mess guaranteed). I was very impressed by her voice, and a bit envious at how effortlessly she could sing so smoothly - the combination of her voice and guitar was rich. I rode my bike back home and sat down and forced myself to finish off my weeklybeat. Although often frustrated with my voice, I have to say it is so satisfying when I get a take that feels "good". I enjoy the process and that is what counts.
This song was an exploration of an idea that came up somewhere(? can't recall) - the feeling of being loved so wholly that you do not feel like you meet up to the ideal of those who love you, and instead feel unworthy. Not something that I necessarily relate to, so an interesting one to explore.
    Alternate tuning: CGDGBE
I do not recognise my voice
as it echoes through her temple
This place is not for me - a non-believer
    I cannot cross the threshold
    Lead me to the water
    Do not make me think
Hold me down and wash me
I've seen the marbles she carved of me
My shadow couldn't touch their feet
    Stare into my eyes
I want to see where it is that lover's beauty lies
    Lead me to the water
    Do not make me drink
Hold me down and wash me
    I see the angel
    In the stone
    And I set it free

  • Week 19 - Dank Receptor - Menton Finds
Fors.fm released the FMS groovebox software for the Gameboy Advance last week, and I've had a jolly old time getting it to work on various hardware boxes. For now it's running well on my GBA, GBA SP, New 3DS and Anbernic.
Anyway, here's the first attempt at a track. Due to convenience/time restrictions I ran the software in the mGBA emulator on my PC. Recorded the stereo out via Audacity, then imported to Ableton for light mastering (Vulf Compressor and EQ). The FM synthesis and sound engine is 8 bit, so it all comes across nice'n'crunchy.
This track is a single 16 step pattern performed live and "arranged" by muting in real time with the game controller. There is at least one mute fumble in there. :D
Since FMS shares some ideas with Nanoloop and LSDJ, it wasn't too hard to get going.
Stuff I tried to figure out:
    - Navigating the UI with the game controller
    - Basic synthesis and sequencing w/parameter locks
    - Logics to create longer sequences / variations
    - Different track rates for even longer sequences
    - Panning / echoes
Will look into the phrase/transpose and scale functions next.
Thanks for listening, have a lovely week!

  • Week 19 - rdomain - Last Breath of the Emperor
All sounds are from the erhu.  I had a studio session with an amazing erhu player called Felix Wang who I'm currently mentoring in creative practices.  This piece contains 2 custom virtual instruments I created from the recordings of Felix plus a mildly edited take of one of his performances for the lead parts.
    Enjoy!

  • Week 19 - Daos1 - Midnight Wander
I made this with as little instruments/sound samples as possible, I ended up using 6 different sounds for it. But then the laptop I was using to make it went flat. And my work got deleted. Then I somehow forgot the melody. =(
I was able to remake everything exactly the same, except for the melody and the car sound timings, but the car timings don't matter as much.
I used the same sound for the new melody, and tried to make it as similar as possible, but I wasn't able to make it the same, so there have been two different versions of this song now, one of which no longer exists.
    Hope it sounds good. =D
(also I wish it wouldn't automatically convert my smilies like = D into square emojis like =D, is there a way to fix that?)
