  • Week 17 - muhamor - Dark Scope
Hello! Another scramble week for me, but I'm glad I spent the time on this because it feels like I'm learning things.
    › Production Notes‹ Production Notes
This week continues my genre exploration into future bass. I watched some sound design tutorials and listened to some more reference tracks. I mostly focused on sound design on the saw chords and bass. Here are the rough notes:
    - saw chords hypersynth saw chords
    - FM synth bass patch
    - lightly processed long sustain piano sample
    - one-shot breaks from DnB rebellion kick/snare samples
    - mixed on my cheap IEMs, so I'm not sure how this sounds like on speakers that can handle low end
I still feel pretty lost in this genre, but overall I think I'm getting a little closer to how I want to sound :)
    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Week 17 - in_bocca_al_lupo - time_tables
Had this old beat that I've tried to polish a little with whatever free time I had. Glad to see it become something more "real".
    Hope you guys like it!

  • Week 17 - Nyarlos - Back to Nowhere
Another general melodic black metal number, playing round with some bass sounds with a new bass pedal, the Laney Nathan East DB Preamp, some nice distortions on there. So tried a few more bass melody bits to pop out of the guitars

  • Week 17 - Paisleyfrog - Upon Blackest Rose Doth My Love Weepe
Let's do some Renaissance Black Metal. Or at least those genres as interpreted by a frog.
Finally started to feel good this week! Let's make something weird.
I've had the silly idea of making renaissance metal for a LONG time. And if I did it, I always thought I'd call the band SpeedWhistle. Took me like 20 years, but I finally got it done. Let’s do it!
On the whole, I didn't spend a lot of time on music this week. I'm still recovering from my cold, and it felt good to spend some time just resting, I was pretty confident I could just make something on Saturday.
I don't do a lot of social media anymore, but I do watch Instagram Reels. I don't interact with anything, but it has me pegged enough to know that I like music. It's been showing me a lot of ads for various plugins, and it caught me last week - a black metal amp sim for Amp Locker. I don't listen to a ton of black metal, but I absolutely love Immortal...so I bought it. And the main riff for this rack jumped out right after installing.
Fast forward to like Saturday morning. I played around with a bunch of ideas, and nothing really stuck. As is the way, I ended up going back to the very first thing I did this week, that riff I did after I downloaded the Krieg black metal amp. I'm really wondering when I'm going to start trusting my first ideas....
I had the riff, but nothing else. Sunday morning! Decided that it needed to start quiet. Added a few sounds like harp and English horn. I don't own a crumhorn, but I've found that English horn is a decent approximation. Harp is from Hollywood Strings.
Did the initial whistle take with a Bb whistle...but very quickly realized that recorder was the way to go. Did something I've been wanting to do since forever and did a four+ part recorder arrangement - tenor, soprano and sopranino. I'm rather pleased with it. Everything was recorded with an SM58 just sort of sitting on my desk.
The lead guitar sound isn't actually a guitar - it's an electric mandolin (and looks like a Stratocaster that accidentally got put into the dryer). I've been wanting to do tracks with more of the weird instruments I own, so a lot of that was accomplished this week :)
Finally did more of a drum treatment - this is a session drummer, but I converted to MIDI and broke the line into separate tracks...so I was able to approach each instrument as it needed (snare, kick and overhead). Pretty pleased with the drums, especially for a quick job!
Title is a play on John Dowland, who was the first rockstar of music in about 1590 or so. His songs and lute arrangements are phenomenal. If you haven't listened before, go check them out. If Dowland were alive today, he 100% would be emo or black metal.

  • Week 17 - boorch - W17: Fleeting
    Experiments on Grampus continue... https://boorch.itch.io/grampus
This project occupies too much in my head. The very limited free time I have is conseumed by this. I love it, but I'm a bit tired. I won't burn out, but still I feel a bit off. Not sure my mood is reflected on this tune, maybe it is, becuase trying to write it I found 4 bugs I had to fix urgently. It's a weird loop. I want to develop the software I exactly want to compose tunes I want. While composing tunes I want, I come up with other stuff I think that needs to be implemented. Weird. Dunno. This week I'm weird.

  • Week 17 - Jason Nijjer - a place to work in secret
This one came together pretty quickly, still having fun with the microcosm emulation in vcv rack to add some sparkle.  Wishing everyone a wonderful week, thanks for stopping by for a listen.

  • Week 17 - codydjango - noise/amnesia-003
Missed the last few weeks. I'm going through a challenging period and I've been at a loss for time and energy. A couple strokes of bad luck: my mom had a difficult medical diagnosis, then I lost my job, then my mom had a medical emergency earlier this week. She's okay now.
She was at my house when it happened: I found her in the kitchen, very confused -- she didn't know why we had flowers on the table. She had brought the flowers for my wife that morning, a gift for her birthday. She couldn't remember anything from the past year, and she also wasn't retaining any new information. I rushed her to the urgent care hospital nearby, and they transferred us to a larger hospital an hour away for CT and MRI scans. She's still being monitored, and she's getting great care. It took about 24 hours for the amnesia to dissipate, and she's still with a 6 hour gap.
Yay, Canadian healthcare! People gripe a lot, but it's been amazing for us in this case.
I'm not quite sure what to do about work. I work in software, seven years as an software engineering manager for tech "scale-ups" but I'm really not enjoying it like I used to, and the parts I love seems to be on the way out. With advances in AI, I'm not feeling optimistic about job security. I'll likely figure something out fairly soon, but I've started thinking about career pivots.
In positive news, I'm on my way to get a puppy. We're all very excited. A Silken Windhound. It's my first dog. Yes, I'm up for the challenge of raising a puppy, and we have lots of support :)
For WB, I'm not sure how consistent I can be with my contributions at this point. I'd like to keep up with a creative hobby -- we'll see how it goes. My beats might be a little more noise-oriented for the next while.
This one is a little harsh, sorry about that. Recorded live, some quick edits, and posted in about an hour. Take care everyone, hope you're well!
