  • Week 15 - cistern stairs - the egg is hatching
    Goal at start:
Experiment with a bpm above 200.
Experiment with call and response more within each loop, and try to get at least one good counter melody in. Recently I’ve just been going for some kind of pad layer with a top melody with one instrument all the way through an 8 bar segment. This time I want to break up those melodies into a few more distinct parts within 8 bars.
    End notes:
If you had asked two weeks ago to imagine what a song in 220 bpm would sound like, I probably would have imagined the sonic equivalent of a panic attack. If you had asked me to guess the bpm of the song I made this week I never would have guessed 220, or even 110. It would seem I still have a lot to learn when it comes to tempo. Also, the only reason I would choose 220 over 110 is because of how the piano roll in FL Studio works. In 110 I seem to not be able to program 16th notes the way I might normally if it was 220 and thus have to use the note chop tool. There is probably a setting to fix this but I haven't looked into it yet (though it's probably still easier to just set the bpm above 200).
    Action plan for next week:
Again try to push for more dynamic layers, alternating sounds, and call and response within 8 bar segments, not just across longer 17 bar sections.

  • Week 15 - jetjaguar - Paekākāriki Escarpment Track
    Aims for this week
The things I tried to do this week that are different from what I usually do:
Write house musicMinimise textural / timbral changes
I also ended up seeing how it would sound if it was either in 5 4 but subdivided into groups of 4, or in 4 4 but using strict quintuplets, however you choose to think about it. In my software I set the time signature to 5 4, and, for example put a kick drum every 5 16th beats. But honestly these kinds of time signature shenanigans are the type of thing I do semi-regularly.

As usual I've written process notes on my blog.

  • Week 15 - Minnamari - The Ride
[SKIP the first paragraph if you don't feel like reading details about illness etc..I don't know how to "roll up" the text under a clickable link, if anyone wants to teach me, feel free :)
I started writing this song sometime in 2022, as a way of processing events/experiences from when my first child was a baby.  I spent a week hospitalized after a botched operation, trying to heal my beast inflammation.. Felt like a weird Frankenstein'monster with a tube stuck to my chest for days, and still tried to pump milk to bring my baby.. And then the hospital visits for months after, with bus rides home from the hospital, hoping the painkillers would kick in after all the biopsies they took to try to figure out why I wouldn't heal...But, the biggest pain was probably the pain I felt in my heart at the fact that for the first half year of my baby's life, it was painful to even hold him because I had gaping wounds in my chest. In the end it wasn't the doctors that healed me, but the way I started caring for myself again. But it's been tough. It's SO Hard to prioritize your own wellbeing when there's a tiny little human screaming for you. I was really overriding my own needs for that first half year..every person who is navigating this balancing act of caring for others + themselves to the best of their ability is a hero in my eyes.
This song was incomplete for many years, I couldn't find a way to wrap up the ending and I was honestly a bit shy to sing it because it has both some cheeky AND some deeply vulnerable parts. Well, maybe now I'm in a place where I don't care as much or I've healed enough or am just in a different place and feel like it's time to release this story. Maybe in releasing it, I can move forward even more fully. The ride goes on..
    Lyrics:
A pregnant woman can also ride
Enjoying her body lying on the side
You know my legs can open really wide
I have the proof right here
Oh, I hope they won't mind...
Their mother needs to let out some steam
Or else she will start bursting at the seams
With heart and mind so open, there is nowhere I won't elope
And afterwards it all seems just like a dream
Life feels like a dream since you arrived here
Well, if I'm honest, it's a bloody nightmare
    (at times)
And yet, I hope you know there's nothing I wouldn't do
I'd gladly give my life protecting you
But I'd rather try to live a life
    That could inspire you
    To live a life too
After my first child I was in denial
No one taught me how to mourn the death of my childless life
After the second one: No time for pride
Had to learn it only helps to look inside
That inner star is my tourist guide
This is a funny tour, this little thing called life
So much reason to be awed, yet so much strife
The thing that's supposed to nurture you
Is filled with wounds and bleeding too
    The doctors take another biopsy
It seems my body will never be free
The biopsy gun makes another hole
While you are hungry waiting at home
I... disappear into the ceiling squares
Just somehow have to get out of there
The painkiller bus gets me home
But now there is really no hope
For milk to come out of this breast
Can't help feeling worse than the rest
Still you fall asleep at my chest
And I swear that You are the best
Life feels like a dream since you arrived here
And sometimes it might feel like a nightmare
But baby, I hope you know
I'm gonna try to help you grow
And while you grow, your mom will grow with you
She still has some growing to do too
    Let's grow together, baby
I know there's a day when you're gonna fly away
But for now, we will have a ride of a lifetime
But for now, we will have a ride of a lifetime

    › Production Notes‹ Production Notes
Super cheat week for me this week. Two years ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to make electronic music. I started by doing something I called “Musiktober” where I would make a new sketch or track every day in October. In the earlier part of the month, I was messing around in various iOS synths (Xynthesizer, patterning, AUM). About 15 days in, I discovered Koala Sampler and instantly fell in love with how fun and immediate it was.
This is one of the first koala tracks I’ve ever made. All sounds are made from my voice. The latter section adds some koala effects to turn up the meow. Composed and written about a year and a half ago, and the only thing I did this week is figured out how to covert from wav to an m4a. Mainly I just wanted to share this track with y’all because I had a lot of fun making it :).
    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Week 15 - NeonRebar - Wee Hours
Its the wee hours and furtive rustlings in the yard are giving way to more concerted jumping and ramshackle bumbling. Enter the grudging hours that grind like some massive millstone gaining speed on each revolution.
There is thick scent of loam and fertile soil. Flies of the unseen continent and their kindred mini-wasps of the balkanized undergrowth summon to strict wing maintainance and leg duty.
A snipe blinks in and out of existence. Irrational gymnastics of a gang of young toads adds to the steady ostinato in the time of slow waking.
Dewpoint gathers momentum and water tendrils melt into life on the leaves and stems of the vegetative battalion.
Miles overhead, a discrete and pristine jet like some obscure dragon cleaves the still and whispers its jetty propulsion in a cosmic background radiation to paint the sky.
I stand silent at the window, focus my eyes to the low light and bear witness .
