ok! so, this week i actually wrote a full song with guitar and vocals and i made cover art and everything and it was gonna be soooo sick but then i didn't get a good opportunity to record it. so, i ended up playing bits of the song with acoustic guitar into the mic of my m8 and that spiraled into this "beats" version/remix of the song! i'll definitely record the original for a future week but i think it's funny to have a remix first. everything is a remix anyway! right? coincidentally it's also the first song i've made on the m8, i had a lot of fun with this silly machine and i still have a lot to learn!

This week i've spent some time having fun and hopefully learn some SP-404MKII basics and last evening of the week i find myself fiddling with the Monome Norns Shield plugged into TE TX-6 with the latest firmware, which i had no chance to experience. The outcome is, oh well, pretty generative and sort of live. Pixels is the app running on Norns, TX-6 takes care of custom sequenced bass and drums along with some extra reverb and performance effects. Traditionally, mastered in Logic.

This one turned out quite dark and drony. I have been enjoying especially things that have been pleasant and calm this week, so i don't why this came out in this way. Next week maybe i will try to make something a little more bright.

I decided to go an excursion this week, to my kitchen, to sample sounds from there and use them in a piece. The are still more sounds out there that i didn't think of when i had the recording equipment there but maybe i return in thee future. All of the samples were used in Phase Plants granular sampler.

I sampled my microwave oven which is ended up being the base kind of "organ" sound for the piece. I used recordings of the microwave from two different locations. I think this sound put this project on the darker side as there are two notes coming from the microwave when it turns on with a weird interval (i haven't tried to find out exactly whats going on.) I really tried from the beginning to make it sound consonant, all the buttons i pushed were simple harmonies but i just wanted to be kind of a crying sound i don't know haha.

Then i used a sound beating the dishbrush in the sink, i used it to make this kind of random "drum" kind of sound, which also came out a little bit possesed. I'm not sure how well this integrated in the mix, i think it wanted more space.

the last sample was the faucet slowly dripping into a bottle with some keytracking bandpass filtering.

I also took an impulse response (i just clapped so nothing fancy) from the kitchen which i used for all the reverb in the track. My kitchen is a small narrow room, and sounds pretty much like what people are trying to acoustically treat when they are building studios haha, so i'm sure that didn't contribute to the pleasantness either.

I had a lot of fun with the sound design process on this but the result aybe wasn't what i was craving the most... Hope someone else has made something bright and calm this week that i can listen to...

This past week I took delivery of a new pedal: a JHS Colourbox 10, thinking that could help with the frequency profile in direct recording. (I happened to find a demo copy at a notable discount, so it was worth springing for it.) I tried it out Thursday night, recording the first theme you hear on this one. There are three channels of PureSalem Mendiola, with the center (bridge pickup) not using the pedal, except for the parts at 1:21 and 2:42, which do. Left (neck pickups) and right (both pickups) use the pedal. There's a bit of frequency profile nudging, and a little bit of overdrive in there. The bridge pickup mostly sounded better direct through the UA Volt, except for those couple of rhythm parts.

Initially I was going to do something more sparse, but the part at 1:00 showed up Saturday night, and changed the feel of the piece to something more energetic, so I went in that direction. (I had recorded a few more introspective sections that no longer fit.)

On listening back, I'm a little uncomfortable at the audible section join at 2:20. And in retrospect I might've gotten a bit zingy with the pedal, but...here we are.

There's the usual convolution reverb send here, and the compression/eq on the stereo mix.

The title comes from Dovenest Top near Glaramara, with an elevation of 632 m.

Like 80% of this beat was done with my Behringer UB-Xa just playing a bunch of lil riffs and recording them.

Don't know why I'm defaulting to these trance beats? But I seem to be in to it.

Been traveling for these two past weeks. Missed last weeks deadline, scrapped that beat and started again with this. Been making chiptunes on my gameboys mostly for the past few years, so it feels fun to dive into my computer again and rediscovering the plugins I've been hoarding and that has been released since I've been 'away'.

Produced in Ableton. Shoutout to Serum 2 that made a crazy synth even crazier.

Bigger shoutout to Junior by Fors that has some really inspiring presets and has a very good console sound!

I also really like the Nudistort plugin I just found the other day and threw in here and there, just scratching the surface on all of these.

Apologies for the song about mortality, but she wanted to be born this week!

It's been a few years since I've sat down with my guitar and played around until the sounds felt like me. This song is deeply personal, and writing it was really cathartic. I've been saying lately that I've stared death in the face the last year and a half. Cancer will make you face your mortality, but it's also gifted me so much. It's made me a lot more bold and reminded me to have the audacity to live my life how I want. Since I'm one of the lucky ones that gets to live, I'm going to do just that.

I've never recorded my own guitar overdubs and had so much fun doing this. I may have to learn how to play leads now!

I am really appreciating this community. WB has motivated me to be consistently creative and it's been so supportive for the current phase of life I'm in. I am loving discovering who I am as an artist. And I'm really grateful for the community support. Everyone is so kind, and your words mean more to me than you'll know. I am a little behind on comment responses but will be spending time with them this week. Appreciate y'all <3
