Clearly I’m hitting my burn out phase for this year. This happened during 2024 weekly beats. That was my first year doing this and I thought I would experience a steady increase in momentum and improvement as the year progressed but what actually happened was towards the second half of the year I was just limping along, scraping together anything I could and maybe getting in a few good beats occasionally. That seems to be the cycle I’m in right now.

Plan for next week:

Take a stab and something with a bit more rhythmic vitality. It’s clear at this point drums, rhythm, and tempo are blind spot. Somehow I need to sharpen my awareness of this.

This week just slapped me around and was generally not fun.  While there was part of me that wanted to lash back with some sort of aggro punk-ish track, I realized I wasn't really feeling that energy.  Instead I decided to go in a more mellow mode.  I made a conscious decision not to utilize any drum sounds and started with some simple acoustic guitar picking.  I wrote a few fairly minimal lyrics, just trying to evoke the general feeling of bygone summers.  Then I pulled out my cello.  While I had the cello bow out, I decided to add some musical saw and ended up doing an extended outro section featuring it.  There are a few synth sounds in there to round it out.  And that's pretty much it.

Had a ton of fun with this one. I cut 3-4 minutes of it because it was initially more of a hodgepodge of sections. Once I wrote the middle section of this song, I realized it was too awesome to dilly dally around and I wanted it to be more cohesive. I think the middle chunk is the coolest techno radness I’ve been able to make to date. Not exactly a match, but I was imagining Cornelius while writing it.

Everything on M8, and the main sample is the extracted piano from a saxophone + piano song I wrote. Tried to add lots of special flairs throughout to not make it go too stale.

This week I'm back in my usual lane of trashy acid techno drowned in delay. For this track I loaded up my Polyend Play with a custom kit of samples from my collection, then used the Play as a MIDI sequencer for a TT-78 and TT-303 with a Boss BD-2w Blues Driver distortion on the 303. I performed the whole rig live (manually punching in some Play effects and tweaking the 303 knobs, on separate takes) and mixed the tracks in Bitwig, adding a bit of Mix Drums to the TT-78 track and using Efx Motions for one section of the 303 but mostly leaving stuff as-is. I like how the analog and digital drums complement each other; adding a couple of analog drum tracks seems to add a lot of life to the whole kit.
