I did take a few stabs at the sample challenge on Discord. But this track wanted to get finished more than anything else i had cooking. So i did not deny it.

oh the fun that is music!

this one started out with the main lyric. i wrote it to a friend who is continually tired and thought 'that sounds like a rage against the machine lyric'...so i tried something like that! it was so much fun getting this one down. regarding the '[eX]' status here: besides having fun, one of my benchmarks for a track is being at least 69 bars. that length cut really nicely into the final section of the song, but i had so much fun making it, i didn't want to deprive the world of the ending.

anyway, here's the lyrics to the best of my knowledge.

Week 28

Goal at start 7/7:

Focus on hook development within shorter segments. I seem to have a tendency to stretch my attention across 8 bars, so I'm going to try making things sound more full within 4 bars.

I also want to remind myself to stop at various points in the process to do a general assessment of how things are going, and do a genre assessment. I often lose track of my original intentions for genre once I start putting notes down.Even if I’m missing my genre targets I can start building an awareness of when I start drifting.

End notes 7/9:

I noticed I have an expectation of starting with one layer, then choosing more sounds and adding more layers, but not revisiting the layers I already made much. I make adjustments but don’t rewrite the whole part from scratch. I’m starting to think it will be better to have an expectation of rewriting everything once the whole ensemble of sounds are in place, and think of everything up to that point as just place holder melodies.

Plan for next week:

Maintain focus on 4 bar segments. Try making more dramatic revisions once all the sound layers have been chosen.

Remember to stop at various points in the process and do a full assessment, specifically a genre assessment.

written because i was trying out two plugins i just installed. probably a song i will completely forget about until i listen back to all the tracks i made over this year when its over.

the lyrics are just chopped up texts from magic the gathering cards i pulled out of a deck i had next to my desk.

OP-XY being pushed to its limit once again using all 8 tracks and all the bells and whistles. Preformed live into Ableton in two takes. Sorry that it just ends, I could not think of a good way to stop. Trust me it was hard to actually stop on this one, it could have turned into a 20 min epic!

Short week, had to submit by Wednesday. Started with a piano house thing and then eventually went into something else a little more heavier, maybe akin to the NES TMNT game, with a kind of off beat ending just because.

Furnace Tracker again, decided to dig deeper into the chips and stumbled on an arcade configuration for the arcade game Equites by Alpha Denshi which uses the MSM5232, AY-3-8910, and a really limited MSM 6258 sample channel.

The MSM5232 is a fairly interesting chip; it's from around 1983 and uses 8 channels of additive synthesis similar to an organ (combine up to 4 octaves of sound). Very limited volume controls, but a fairly unique method of sound generation for the time. Had fun playing around with it.
