“FIRST CONTACT” BY MURRAY LEINSTER #ThrillerThursday #WeirdDarkness

Please SHARE Weird Darkness with someone who loves paranormal stories, true crime, monsters, or unsolved mysteries like you do! Recommending the show to others helps make it possible for me to keep doing the show!

IN THIS EPISODE: It’s #ThrillerThursday, so tonight you’ll be hearing a story of fiction. I’ve been on an old-time radio kick recently, listening to shows like “The Whistler”, “Dimension X”, and “Strange Tales”. One of my favorite shows is called “X-Minus One”.  It was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series that was broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC radio. At the end of each episode they tell you where the stories they used came from before they adapted them for radio – and one of those sources was the publication “Astounding Science Fiction Magazine”. I jumped online to see if there were old copies I could look at, and I found a book – an anthology of many of the stories from that magazine. The book was published in 1954 The story was entitled “First Contact”, written by Murray Leinster in 1945. The story is credited as one of the first instances of a universal translator in science fiction. So influential is the story that it won a retro Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1996.

HOUR ONE: Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, Skunk Ape, he goes by many names depending on what part of the country – and what part of the world – he is spotted in. For a creature that is said by skeptics not to exist, how can so many sightings of a similar creature occur worldwide, in so many different cultures, by people with so many different beliefs? And why have we not been able to capture one or find solid proof? What do UFOs have to do with Bigfoot – if anything? So many questions… so few answers. We look at the enigmatic Bigfoot in this episode.

HOUR TWO: We’ll look at some historic serial murderers and the strange and unusual ways they killed their victims. (Strange Predilections in Murder Methods) *** When it comes to planning the burial of someone, it’s always best to to keep in mind that whomever is watching how you treat the deceased might be in charge of deciding what happens to you when you die. Sadly, one undertaker, Millard F. Rodgers, apparently forgot about the golden rule – and committed gruesome acts against families. (Six Children, One Grave) *** Residents in the town of Blakeney are reporting something horrifying prowling around the neighborhood and backyards… something they describe as a devil dog… a hell hound… a black shuck. (The Black Shuck of Blakeney) *** We have all been guilty of wishing we had more money coming in. Some people go out and get a second job. Others look at what they have to sell online, or look at what skills they have to offer to the public that they could charge money for. Or you can go the route of Georgia Tann – her entrepreneurial spirit brought her millions of dollars. And it was a simple idea. Steal other people’s children, and then sell them! “NOSFERATU: THE NIGHTMARE HISTORY AND TERRIFYING LEGACY OF A CLASSIC HORROR FILM” #WeirdDarkness

Please SHARE Weird Darkness with someone who loves paranormal stories, true crime, monsters, or unsolved mysteries like you do! Recommending the show to others helps make it possible for me to keep doing the show!

IN THIS EPISODE: The 1922 horror classic Nosferatu still turns up, on TV and on college campuses, every Halloween. And it’ll show up again this coming Saturday night, May 1st, at 9pm Central Time as our “Halfway to Halloween” Weirdo Watch Party film - complete with Drac as our horror host for the evening! (More info at https://weirddarkness.com/watchparty). A Weirdo family member suggested we take a look at the film’s history before this weekend’s watch party – to set up the fun even more. And I love the idea. So that’s what we’re going to do. How Nosferatu is terrifyingly relevant today, the controversial making of the film and the lawsuit by Bram Stoker’s wife, how the director of the film was involved in the occult… and how you would not have wanted to miss the film’s premiere which was an unforgettable event all by itself. That and a whole lot more about 1922’s Nosferatu, on this episode of Weird Darkness.

“THE MYSTERIOUS BODY ‘DONATION’ OF HARRIET COLE” #WeirdDarkness

Please SHARE Weird Darkness with someone who loves paranormal stories, true crime, monsters, or unsolved mysteries like you do! Recommending the show to others helps make it possible for me to keep doing the show!

IN THIS EPISODE: You wouldn’t think this would be Weird Darkness material, but there is an unsolved mystery here more than 130 years in the making. Dissecting the human nervous system is a taxing task—and in some cases, very little is known about the people whose bodies wound up on anatomists' tables. In 19th-century Philadelphia, an anatomist dissected and mounted a human nervous system. Now researchers are trying to figure out whose remains are stretched out in a glass case. And it’s proving to be quite difficult. (The Mysterious Body Donation of Harriet Cole)

“THE GRIM TRUE STORY BEHIND HANSEL AND GRETAL” and More Strange True Stories! #WeirdDarkness

This episode is sponsored by the Bizarre Times podcast. Hear interviews about some of the freakiest stuff like strange phenomena, odd places, weird rituals, creepy people, terrifying customs, true crime, and more! Get the podcast at http://BizarreTimesPodcast.com.

IN THIS EPISODE: When a great famine struck Europe in 1314, mothers abandoned their children and in some cases, even ate them. Scholars believe that these tragedies gave birth to the story of Hansel and Gretel. (The Grim True Story Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** Cultures all around the world have stories of tiny humans – elves, leprechauns, fairies, hobbits… but how can so many different communities have such similar descriptions of tiny people? Could there be evidence to prove the existence of tiny humanoids? (Little Human Subspecies) *** Traveling to the Superstition Mountains in search of the rumored treasure hidden there is not only a bad idea… it could be a fatal one. (Mysterious Visitors From Other Realms) *** Seeing an unidentified flying object in the sky is pretty common – even in cases where several people see the flying whatever-it-is at the same time. But when is the last time you and everyone around you looked up and saw an entire city flying in the sky? That’s what happened in 2011 in the Nigerian village of Bauchi. (UFO City) *** But first… according to GPS, off the California coast there are dozens, possibly hundreds of ships moving around in circles. But the ships, while clearly visible on the GPS system, are nowhere to be seen by the human eye. Are these ghost ships from the past? The oceanic version of crop circles? Sailing ships from a different dimension? Or could it be something more disturbing, like a new type of cyber attack? We begin with that story. (California’s Ghost Ships)

Weird Darkness Radio: Weekend of APRIL 24-25, 2021 – HOUR 1
IN THIS HOUR: It is considered by many, Britain’s most well-known disappearing person case. Even now, over three decades later, people in the UK are still fascinated and intrigued by the unexplained vanishing of Suzy Lamplugh. (The Suzy Lamplugh Mystery) *** John List planned the murders of his own family so carefully, he almost got away with it. In fact, it took 18 years to catch him. (The Family Man Who Murdered His Family) *** We’ll look at what it was like to be a woman in the 17th Century… and accused of witchcraft. (Witchly Accusations) *** If you drink whiskey, or even if you don’t, you’re likely familiar with “Jameson Irish Whiskey.” But did you know that cannibalism played a part in its history? (Whiskey and Cannibalism) *** Parents always feel their child is special in some way – something that makes their child better in some way than other children. Parents of indigo children are no different, with some parents thinking their children have psychic abilities. Doctors say that these children have ADD or ADHD, but one parapsychologist says indigo children have something even more special – possibly even paranormal - inside them. (Supernatural Indigo Children) *** A strange phenomenon takes place in Arkansas, and despite the numerous sightings and investigations, there is still no explanation for it. (Unexplained In Arkansas)

IN THIS HOUR: Seeing a lifelike human skeleton in a doctor’s office, especially in the past couple of centuries, was – and in many cases still is - commonplace.
