IN THIS EPISODE: This is a Fireside Frights episode, where I narrate stories sent to me from you, my Weirdo Family. In these episodes I step away from the creepy music and sound effects, no editing out my mistakes – it’s just you, me, this fire in my backyard, and whatever sounds God – or the city of Loves Park, Illinois – wants to send our way. For example, the raindrops on this umbrella I have over my head. It’s just a light rain now so hopefully it won’t be any big deal – we’ll just have to see how it goes.

“THE ROAD VIRUS HEADS NORTH” by STEPHEN KING (Full Audiobook!) #WeirdDarkness

Please SHARE Weird Darkness with someone who loves paranormal stories, true crime, monsters, or unsolved mysteries like you do! Recommending the show to others helps make it possible for me to keep doing the show!

IN THIS EPISODE: I’m bringing you another tale from the king of horror, Stephen King! It’s a short story called “The Road Virus Heads North”. As with many things King writes about, it springs from something real in his own childhood and life, which he then twists into something horrifying. In this case, he wove the story around a painting he has in his home – a painting that apparently is not liked at all by his family. As Stephen King is a fan of photos and paintings coming to life in his stories, he was inspired to write this tale. “The Road Virus Heads North” tracks an author who buys a creepy painting at a yard sale which was painted by a metal-head neighbor just before he committed suicide. It was originally published in 1999 in an anthology book with other authors called “999” – and was later included in the Stephen King collection of stories, “Everything’s Eventual” in 2002. (Links to both books below in the sources and credits.)

“TRUE STORIES OF HARBINGERS OF DOOM” and 3 More Terrifying True Stories! #WeirdDarkness

Please SHARE Weird Darkness with someone who loves paranormal stories, true crime, monsters, or unsolved mysteries like you do! Recommending the show to others helps make it possible for me to keep doing the show!

IN THIS EPISODE: The vast emptiness of Arizona can make the imagination do some crazy things – but then add to that an odd, abandoned set of domelike buildings, graffitied with “666”, where dead animals are found regularly, and the imagination might take you past crazy and into terrifying. (Arizona’s Roadside Horror) *** Mary Harris waited outside the building where Adoniram Burroughs worked, and when he came out she pulled a gun and shot him at close range – killing him instantly. She then walked off, calmly, as if she had only tossed down and stepped on a used cigarette butt. But the public was on her side once her story was told. (The Case of Mary Harris) *** Weirdo family member Danny Ward tells the true story of what happened to him on a camping trip that turned terrifying. (I Just Wanted To Go Fishing) *** Throughout history, we’ve assigned roles for harbingers of doom to various creatures and people. If a black cat crosses your path, it brings bad luck with it. If you see your own doppelganger, you’re dangerously close to an untimely end. If the grim reaper makes an appearance, your time is up. And on and on it goes. In small towns in and around the United States and across the world, creatures lurking in the woods, sounds that can be heard at night, are all signs that something terrible is headed your way. These are what are known as “harbingers of doom” – and there are some horrifying events that have been linked to them over the years. (True Stories of Harbingers of Doom)

Please SHARE Weird Darkness with someone who loves paranormal stories, true crime, monsters, or unsolved mysteries like you do! Recommending the show to others helps make it possible for me to keep doing the show!

IN THIS EPISODE: Human history reports strange sightings in the skies with the appearance of three suns, unnaturally shaped clouds, and fireballs in the sky. Do all of these ancient eyewitness accounts have a natural explanation, or could we be seeing reports of extraterrestrial visitations in centuries past? (Flying Saucers In The Clouds) *** A U.S. Air-Force chaplain is called to duty not against a human enemy – but a spiritual one. (Air Force Exorcist) *** According to oral tradition, a pair of witches came up from the underworld bringing the Native American Zuni people two gifts… and one of those gifts was death. (Zuni Witchcraft) *** According to the song, silence is golden. And it really can be; there are plenty of times when we just want to shut everything out and relax in peace and quiet. But silence isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be, either, and too much silence can drive you mad. It all starts with being able to hear your own organs working, and after about 45 minutes, you’ll start to hallucinate. Silence—and other types of sensory deprivation—can do some weird things to the body and mind… and to the planet. (The Disturbing Effects of Sensory Deprivation)
