Hola, bonjour. Hello. Welcome to Growing with Proficiency the podcast, a podcast created by a World Language teacher for World Language teachers like you who face the daily challenges of being in a classroom. I am Claudia Elliot, a Spanish teacher, born and raised in Colombia. In 2021, I was Teacher of the Year for the state of Florida. And in 2022, I was honored to be CALD Teacher of the Year for the southeastern United States. I'm also the founder of the Growing with Proficiency Spanish Teacher Academy.  

But let me tell you, when I started, things were not as they are today. If I only had a podcast like this. I started teaching over 17 years ago without any tools but a textbook under my arm. Soon, I realized I needed more than that. And I became obsessed in learning everything about second language acquisition. And guess what? I did most of my learning and am learning through podcasts. My turning point as a language teacher was when I discovered the podcast, tea with BBP. I realized that I had to learn so much to finally learn and understand second language acquisition. But I did it and so can you. 

However, let's be honest, the learning never stops. In this process. podcasts have become one of my favorite spaces for professional development. I have learned so much through podcasts. So why not use podcast to share back? When I asked my husband about this idea, his answer was clear, "Absolutely, you should do a podcast." So here I am. 

In Growing with Proficiency, the Podcast, I will share with you the why and the how we can build world language classes for instead of focusing on teaching the language, the rules that will come up, we use the language, so our students grow in their proficiency and cultivate cultural competence. Every week, I will share with you strategies, ideas, activities, and inspiring stories that you can incorporate in your class to get your students and you excited about using the language on learning. Wouldn't that be nice?
