There are a lot of ways humans group themselves. Race, religion, gender, wealth, and that's not even a fraction of it. It's a hard-coded human behavior that society has been raging against for millennia, largely unsuccessfully. The reason for this failure is generally that humans tend to overcorrect, replacing racism A with racism B and assuming the law of averages will take care of the rest. Perhaps one day when we've evolved into cartoon aliens with ray guns and Reese's Pieces we'll all learn to get along.
