  • Sidequest 9: Avengers: Endgame Timeline

Hard to say much in the show notes without spoiling anything. Damnit. It’s hard to talk about this movie because you really can’t talk about this movie! Well, as you can tell by the title, this is about the Endgame Timeline.

Anyways, here’s my take on the timeline(s) in Avengers: Endgame. I think the Russo’s have already said exactly what happened at this point, but in any case, here was my take on it before they started flapping their jaws.

Also, if you haven’t listened to our previous sidequest on Time Travel using the Terminator series as reference, check that out first!

  • Sidequest 8: Time Travel in Film
    Time Travel Made Simple

What’s up folks! Justin here, and I’ve been delving into some pretty solid time travel films lately. As I’m watching, I had an epiphany; I understand everything about time and space (in film). At least, I think I do.

I wanted to take some time to outline how I think it works and simplify it for those whose heads begin to spin when they think about how traversing time works in film.

Or maybe I’m over-thinking it. Nah, that can’t be possible. In any case I hope you enjoy this entry. I should have another short Sidequest coming soon next week too. Enjoy!

  • Episode 39 – Avengers Endgame

Yeah, the header is an intentional joke. First things first, we had mixed feelings about the film…so check out the episode to hear our thoughts on the film. Now, are you ready for an Avengers Endgame PSA?

We here at the Welcome To Your Doom show understand that not everyone could not snag tickets for Avengers Endgame on opening weekend. Tickets were pretty hard to come by 2 weeks out from the release. Let alone, if you’re trying to find tickets this weekend. Justin had to travel 40 minutes north to Bolton to see this on Friday, and Atul managed to snag tickets for Sunday afternoon.

So, we get it, and we sympathize with those that haven’t seen the film yet. As such, you will not see a damn spoiler in these show notes, nor will you hear one in the episode until we belabor the point that we’re about to talk about spoilers.

Avengers Endgame is a cinematic achievement in that it is the culmination of 10+ years and 23 films. Not to mention it opened with 1 billion dollars worldwide. If you have any interest in the MCU, you will see this movie when you can. I just hope you can before some asshole or headline spoils something from the film for you. Good luck true believers.

    Endgame…of Cinema?

Atul checked out Avengers Endgame at Scotiabank Theater in Toronto. The cinema decided to pull all of the “Coming Soon” posters out and replaced them with Endgame ones. Subtly indicating that all future movies are just wastes of time, and all you should watch from now on is Endgame. Or maybe they were just being funny. Or maybe I am?

Anyways, check out the pictures of what Atul described as “completely obnoxious”.

  • Episode 38 – Hellboy
    F****ing Hellboy is F****ing Back Mother F****er

Hellboy is back and 100% more R-Rated than last time. The big red monkey is now played by David Harbour of Stranger Things fame. Hellboy (2019) definitely wants you to know it’s rated R from the very first shot.

Recent reports have come out, conveniently after the review embargo was lifted and the critics have not been kind, revealing that there was some production troubles behind the scene. So, seems like people are playing the blame game. One thing we know is that Justin and Atul generally didn’t enjoy the film either. There are certainly some redeeming qualities, but overall it’s sloppily edited, overly acted, and obnoxiously loud. It prioritizes shock-value-rated-R tropes over character arcs and narrative.

That being said, there are still some redeeming qualities for the film, so check out the episode and the film. Let us know your comments!

  • Episode 37 – Shazam!
Grab His Staff and Say His Name…

April is upon us! That means blockbuster season has officially kicked off kids. Well, there is none better to kick it off than the artist formerly known as Captain Marvel, Shazam!

The harbingers got to see Shazam on opening night, and it was a unique experience. The film was good, and certainly had a different feel to it that most superhero films we’ve seen in the past. Overall, Shazam is sure to please most audiences, young and old.

The film boasts strong performances from both the younger and older members of the cast. Zachary Levi stands out as the man-child that is Shazam. He manages to find a strong balance between a kid who is in over his head, trapped in a man’s body, and a good hearted hero. Kudos to you, Mr. Levi.

    Put on a Happy Face

Before jumping into the episode, we had to talk about the brand new Joker trailer. The upcoming film with the titular character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix is set to release in October of this year. It certainly looks like a unique take on the character. How it fits in with the broader DC Universe, if at all, remains to be seen. However this one shakes out, though, will certainly be an interesting experiment by Warner Brothers and DC to experiment with different interpretations of their extensive roster of characters.

  • Episode 36 – Jordan Peele’s Us
    We’d put 10 on it

Jordan Peele’s Us is the sophomore film for the young director. The harbingers saw Us opening weekend, but the podcast recording was delayed. They just couldn’t process all of the feels to be able to put together an episode on time.

However, now they have and this is it. Jordan Peele’s Us clearly has its own unique voice and message. Whether Justin and Atul are smart enough to pick up on them is up for debate.

But hopefully things make enough sense to you, dear listener. Enjoy the episode!

    Upcoming Episodes

Be on the lookout for more frequent episodes dropping on Mondays throughout April. We have lots of new films to cover between Shazam, Pet Cemetery, Hellboy, EndGame, etc. Needless to say, it’s going to be a busy month.

  • Episode 35 – Captain Marvel Review
Captain Marvel – Was it Marvelous?

Your harbingers saw Captain Marvel on the Friday night of its release, braving the overeager masses, to watch this prequel to the marvel cinematic universe. Well, technically second prequel. Captain America: The First Avenger is technically the first prequel. But hey, Captain Marvel occurs before the current slew of movies, so it’s still a prequel.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as the titular character, Samuel L Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury, and Jude Law plays Jude Law (yeah I said it).

Overall, the film is passable. It’s not bad, but it also isn’t particularly great. See it for yourself and check back with us to see if you agree with Justin and Atul.

    Captain Marvel vs. Rotten Tomatoes

One other noteworthy thing to mention is the effect Captain Marvel and star Brie Larson has had on Rotten Tomatoes. The review aggregation website allowed for user reviews in advance of the films release. This functionality has been removed to ensure that only quality and legitimate user reviews are being posted. A majority of the 10’s of thousands of reviews received on or in advance of the debut of the film were trolls or bots attempting to lambaste the film for reasons other than the film’s merit.

This is not the first time that this has occured on Rotten Tomatoes, however it may be the last. As stated, Rotten Tomatoes has adjusted its functionality to limit user reviews until after a film has been released. Users can still rate whether they are interested, or not, in seeing the film. Hopefully more work will also be put in to ensure that malicious bots are not attempting to spam RT either.

Check out our episode on Rotten Tomatoes for more about the review aggregation website.

  • Episode 34 – The Future of Physical Media
    Is Physical Media Still Relevant?

Film streaming services seem to be popping up everywhere these days. We have Netflix, Hulu, Crave, Shudder, Amazon, and many more. With all of this content available for consumers so readily, there has been a rapid decline in sales for Blu Ray and other physical sources of media. I can watch Avengers: Infinity War on Netflix, so why would I buy the Blu Ray? Well, if you’re not a stickler for quality, that might be acceptable. However, the harbingers are here to present some other reasons why physical media is still a big deal and shouldn’t be riding off to the sunset just yet.

    Ticku’s Talking

Atul and Justin are joined this episode by Ajay Ticku, the creator of Ticku Talk. A blog dedicated to all things Reggae. Ajay’s taste and knowledge of Reggae is exceptional and the blog is definitely worth your time exploring. Check it out at www.TickuTalk.com

After a month and a half the harbingers are back with a new episode! Justin and Atul discuss their favorite animated films.
