This week we are talking about the movie Hocus Pocus. This a family, comedy, horror Disney movie starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The Sanderson sisters are witches living in Salem Massachusetts in the 1600's. They steal the soul of a young girl and are hung by the local town people. Winifred Sanderson manages to cast a spell so she and her sisters will be brought back to life when a virgin lights a magic candle.
Flash forward to 1993 when young Max lights the candle to impress Allison the Sanderson sisters reappear to take another child's soul so they can live beyond the night.
Hocus Pocus is fun, family-friendly, Halloween movie. It's silly, wacky, and very Disney, but that's not a bad thing. We think you will enjoy Hocus Pocus. We always do. Enjoy!
Hoosiers is an old-timey feeling movie partly because it's set in a small town in Indiana in 1951 but also because that's the way they wanted it to feel. It's definitely a classic and a slow-burn of a movie. There isn't anything flashy, even the basketball sequences are mostly slow motion, but again that seems on purpose.
Hoosiers is a solid movie, and must see for anyone who likes basketball or small town dramas. The acting fits with the movie but we think the "love" story doesn't work. The setting and look are what really gives this movie it's overall feeling like you are actually watching a movie made in the 50's. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about the romantic-comedy Fever Pitch starring Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore, and the Red Sox historic world championship season.
Ben is a public school teacher in Boston obsessed with the Red Sox and Lindsey is a high-powered corporate something singly focused on her career. They feel this is perfect for each other at first but they soon find it doesn't work when their relationship starts to get really serious.
Fever Pitch is a a fun, lighthearted comedy with some really tender moments. Fallon does a good job handling the drama and is excellent with the comedy. Barrymore struggles to find depth in the drama but is fun, charming, and very likable as her character. Fever Pitch is an entertaining romantic-comedy you don't have to take too seriously. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about Friday Night Lights. This is a movie about high school football in west Texas in the late 80's.
For the Odessa Permian Panthers anything short of the Texas Sate championship is unacceptable. Everyone from the star player to the role players must be "perfect" if they are going to overcome the adversity of high school football in Texas at the highest level.
Friday Night Lights gives audiences a glimpse of the pressures and expectations placed on young men playing the sport that represents everything to many of the people in small towns like Odessa, Texas.
The movie hits hard on and off the field with spectacular performances and excellent writing and cinematography. It also introduced the world to a small experimental band from Texas in the soundtrack. Enjoy!
This week on We're Talking Movies we kick off our fall series of movies with Back To School starring Rodney Dangerfield, Robert Downey Jr. and William Zabka. Back To School is a silly movie with classic one-liners from Rodney Dangerfield, a comedic take on the bully from William Zabka, and an early glimpse at Robert Downey Jr. fast talking.
Rodney Dangerfield plays self-made, street smart business man Thornton Melon who joins his struggling son in college to show him the importance of getting an education. Together they find their way to balance between Thornton's ways and his son ways to get through their first semester of college together.
Back To School is an offbeat comedy with an entertainment value that holds up over the years. It does offer plenty of middle of the road college antics while also being about the relationship between a father and son. Enjoy!
Our summer movie series continues with a great underrated surfing movie North Shore starring Matt Adler Greg Harrison. North Shore is a very entertaining and family friendly movie based on surfing, but is actually about a lot more. It's almost criminal how unknown this movie remains.
Matt Adler plays surfing champ Rick from Arizona who dreams of surfing the big waves of the Banzai Pipeline at Hawaii's North Shore. Rick sets off to Hawaii to pursue his dream but soon finds he in in way over his head in more ways than one. Greg Harrison plays Chandler, a surf board maker from Hawaii, who sees the potential in Rick and teaches him all about surfing through the traditions and philosophy of the Hawaiian culture.
Outstanding performances by John Philbin as Turtle, cameos by a ton of pro-surfers, and very good surfing action makes this film one of my most favorite underrated movies of all time. Enjoy!
This week we go cruising and talk about the classic movie American Graffiti. On the surface American Graffiti seems like a movie about hot rods and teenage hormones set in the 50's, but there's a lot more to the story. Add that with an unprecedented soundtrack that includes 45 hits from the 50's and 60's and you have one hell of movie. Enjoy!
Hey bruh, this week we're talking about the totally bitchin' movie Point Break. It stars a wicked buff Keanu Reeves and totally extreme Patrick Swayze. This movie has plenty of sick action despite bogus writing and acting. So hang ten while we charge and carve this movie. Enjoy!
This week we talk about the adventure-comedy Romancing The Stone. Starring a peak Kathleen Turner and pretty average Michael Douglas, Romancing the Stone is a fun, well-written, and entertaining movie. So get your safari hat as we head in to the Columbian (Mexican) jungle. Enjoy!
This week we talk about Independence Day in celebration of the 4th of July and our country's attempt to make all our holidays everyone else's. Listen as we talk about how this is still a very entertaining film. We also discuss how cringy Will Smith's performance has become and why I had to almost turn the hose on my co-host because of Jeff Goldblum's dashing mid-90's good looks. We hope enjoy this patriotic episode of WTM!
