The long-anticipated roadworks on Redbank Plains Road are nearing completion, with Ipswich residents set to enjoy smooth travel before Christmas. Division 1 Councillor Pye Augustine announced that the road, undergoing extensive repairs between Shannon Street, Bellbird Park, and Eygall Street, Redbank Plains, will reopen before the festive season. “We’re pushing to get the asphalt laid in the coming weeks. There’s still work to be done, but we’re confident that by Christmas, the road will be fully operational,” said Augustine, urging the community to remain patient during final lane closures.

In other local news, Ipswich is celebrating Seniors Month throughout October with a series of events designed to honor and engage the city’s older residents. Under this year’s theme, “Love Getting Older,” the celebrations recognize seniors’ contributions to volunteering, mentoring, and community life. The Ipswich Libraries will host technology sessions, offering older residents the chance to learn about 3D design and other digital tools. The month’s highlight, the Seniors Expo, will take place on October 23rd at the Ipswich Showgrounds, showcasing activities and services for seniors.

Residents can also take advantage of the Free Plant Program at Providence Ripley on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Ipswich residents can collect up to six free plants, with the initiative aiming to distribute 120,000 plants annually across the city.

With the state government election set for October 26th, Bundamba MP Lance McCallum has been busy highlighting several major developments in Ipswich. One of the most significant announcements is the $1.066 billion expansion of Ipswich Hospital, which will deliver 200 additional beds, a larger emergency department, and an expanded car park. “This is a real investment in world-class local healthcare for our community,” said McCallum, adding that the population growth makes this infrastructure critical.

Another highlight has been the success of the state’s 50 cent fares for public transport, which has seen a surge in local ridership. McCallum also provided an update on the Bundamba Station upgrade, which now includes a time capsule buried with students from Bundamba Secondary School, to be opened in 30 years.

In addition to public transport improvements, McCallum discussed Ipswich’s clean energy future, specifically the Swanbank Power Station‘s transformation into a clean energy hub. A recent agreement between Ipswich City Council and CleanCo will power all council buildings and around 30,000 streetlights with renewable energy. TAFE has also hit a milestone, with over 100,000 Queenslanders taking up free TAFE courses since last year, including record numbers in Ipswich. Popular courses include nursing and electrotechnology, providing valuable qualifications in high-demand fields.

Councillor Pye Augustine has completed a whirlwind school tour, visiting various schools across her division to witness first-hand the exciting milestones and leadership programs taking place.

During her visits, Councillor Augustine noted the incredible pride principals and deputy principals take in their schools. She also reminded the community that World Teachers’ Day is coming up on October 5th, encouraging residents to celebrate their favorite teachers on this special occasion.

One key highlight of her tour was celebrating two significant milestones. Ripley Valley State Secondary College is turning five this year, marking an impressive milestone for the fast-growing institution. On the other end of the spectrum, Redbank Plains State School is celebrating a remarkable 150 years. Councillor Augustine expressed her admiration for both schools, noting their unique achievements at different stages of their educational journeys.

In addition to school milestones, Councillor Augustine was invited to attend Redbank Plains State High School’s leadership program, where she will speak to students about what it takes to be a leader. She plans to share both her challenges and successes as a community leader, providing valuable insight for the future leaders of Ipswich.

Due to the popularity of the event, with 22 clients attending regularly, Patty announced it will become a weekly affair by the end of October.

“This group is about more than just dancing—it’s a place for building friendships and enhancing social interaction,” Patty explained. “Themed nights, from high school prom to country dress-up, make it a highlight for many attendees.”

With this expansion, more clients will have the opportunity to join the fun, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

As National Secure Your Home Day approaches on 28th and 29th September, Ipswich Police are urging residents to take steps to protect their homes from potential burglaries. Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy highlighted the importance of home security in the weekly Crime Watch segment, emphasising that every day should be a “secure your home day.”

“By implementing simple security measures, residents can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a crime target,” Sheedy said.

She outlined four key principles to improve home security:

1. Increase visibility: Use sensor lighting and CCTV cameras to make it easier for offenders to be seen.

Sheedy encouraged residents to regularly assess their home security and make targeted changes to their behavior to improve safety. “Simple steps like locking doors and windows and installing security lights can go a long way in preventing break-ins,” she added.

Residents can download a National Secure Your Home Day kit from the Neighborhood Watch Australasia website. The kit includes a home security checklist, tips on property marking, and information on community events related to the initiative.
