  • Police Presence at Redbank Plains Announced Amid Council Updates

Ipswich is set to benefit from a new permanent police presence at Town Square Redbank Plains, responding to strong community calls for increased security. This development follows the tragic murder of a local resident, prompting Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding to advocate for heightened safety measures.

In a recent interview, Mayor Harding highlighted the community’s concerns and the council’s proactive steps. “The community has been asking for the establishment of a permanent police presence at Town Square. We pushed for this following the tragic incident earlier this year,” she said. The Queensland Government has responded by committing to 40 extra police officers and 10 new police cars for Ipswich over the next two years.

Mayor Harding also discussed the ongoing revitalization of Ipswich Central, focusing on enhancing Darcy Doyle Place as part of the city’s Cultural Heart project. “We are seeking community feedback on a preliminary concept design to renew Darcy Doyle Place. This project aims to improve access and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using wheelchairs or prams,” she stated. The council is keen to gather input until the consultation closes on 21 August.

The interview also touched on the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with excitement building as Ipswich prepares to host events like the modern pentathlon at Brighton Homes Arena. Mayor Harding emphasized the city’s role and the importance of embracing the upcoming international event.

Additionally, the Western Resource Recovery Centre is progressing, with the council narrowing down potential sites. Public consultation sessions are scheduled, allowing residents to provide feedback on this critical project.

As Ipswich embraces these developments, the Mayor encourages residents to stay engaged and participate in shaping the future of their community. The permanent police presence at Town Square Redbank Plains stands as a significant step towards ensuring a safer environment for all.

  • How to Protect Rego Plates: Securing Vehicle Number Plates

In an effort to combat vehicle-related crimes, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy has emphasised the importance of securing vehicle number plates with anti-theft screws on West Bremer Radio. During a recent Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Sheedy shared valuable advice on how to protect rego plates and prevent opportunistic thefts.

“An opportunistic thief will steal a vehicle and or number plates whenever and wherever there is a slight opportunity not to get caught,” Sheedy explained. She urged the community to take proactive steps in securing their number plates to deter such crimes.

Anti-theft screws are a simple yet effective solution. These specialized screws can be purchased from any hardware store. They come in either a universal pack or a set specific to a vehicle model. While it is possible to install these screws oneself, Sheedy recommended having them fitted by a reputable car service center, as a special screwdriver is required for installation.

In addition to securing number plates, Senior Constable Sheedy offered several preventative strategies to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of property theft:

    1. Secure Your Vehicle: Always lock all doors and close windows. Even if parked in a garage, ensure the car is locked and secured.
  • Remove Keys: Never leave keys in the ignition. Store both original and spare keys away from the car and garage.
  • Park Wisely: Choose well-lit areas for parking.
  • Install Security Devices: Consider fitting a car alarm, immobilizer, ignition shield, or other security devices.
  • Use Anti-Theft Screws: Secure your registration plates with these screws to prevent them from being stolen.
  • For additional information on vehicle and property security, residents are encouraged to visit the safety and prevention crime page on the Queensland Police website or contact the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit at 3817-1351.

“Let’s beat the sneak and secure your property and vehicle now to make sure that you don’t give any opportunistic thief the chance to steal your vehicle or break into your house,” Sheedy concluded.

Taking these preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of vehicle-related thefts, contributing to a safer community.

  • Revitalise Cultural Precinct within Darcy Doyle Place – 26072024

Ipswich City Council is calling on residents to contribute their thoughts on the upcoming revitalisation of the cultural precinct within Darcy Doyle Place. Councillor Marnie Doyle, representing Division 3, highlighted the importance of this project during her recent interview on West Bremer Radio.

“The revitalization of our cultural heart is a key priority under the Ipswich Central redevelopment,” Doyle stated. This initiative aims to enhance the city’s vibrant arts and cultural scene, which was prominently showcased during the Spark Ipswich festival earlier this month.

Darcy Doyle Place, located along Nicholas Street from Roderick Street in the south to the Nicholas Street precinct in the north, is set to undergo a significant transformation. The preliminary concept design for the area is now open for public consultation. This design incorporates feedback from the community, gathered during late 2023, reflecting the features and public space elements that residents have expressed interest in.

“Community consultation is open until August 21st, and we encourage everyone to share their thoughts,” Doyle urged. The feedback will help shape the final design, ensuring it meets the community’s needs and expectations.

This project is part of a broader effort to rejuvenate Ipswich Central, which has already garnered multiple urban design awards. The redevelopment aims to preserve the city’s history and heritage while fostering cultural growth, essential for the rapidly expanding population.

In addition to the cultural precinct development, Ipswich recently welcomed 165 new Australians at a citizenship ceremony, showcasing the city’s inclusive and multicultural community. “We have such a rich cultural tapestry, and our festivals and community-led events celebrate this diversity,” Doyle noted.

Moreover, the council is making strides in improving local infrastructure. The continuous footpath connection from Madden Street to Grange Road in Jim Donald Parklands is nearing completion, enhancing accessibility for senior residents and those with mobility aids.

Sports facilities are also benefiting from the council’s efforts. The Jim Donald Parklands, home to the Raceview Soccer Club and Brothers Cricket Club, have seen significant upgrades, supported by state government funding.

Councillor Doyle remains actively engaged with the community, participating in events such as the ABC Foundation’s fundraiser for domestic violence awareness and the Collingwood Park State School trivia night.

The revitalization of Darcy Doyle Place and other ongoing projects highlight Ipswich City Council’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and well-connected community. Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation process to help shape the future of their city.

Accord Care, an organisation dedicated to providing comprehensive accommodation services, is making significant strides in the community. Carolyn Johnson, a key figure at Accord Care, recently shared insights into the organisation’s mission and activities during the All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio.

Accord Care has been operational for about three and a half years, offering a range of services, including Supported Independent Living (SIL), Short Term Accommodation (STA), Medium Term Accommodation (MTA), and Individual Living Options (ILO). “We provide everything accommodation-related and have an amazing program called the Hospital to Home program,” Johnson explained. This initiative aims to transition individuals from hospital settings to their homes, thus reducing hospital occupancy rates.

In addition to accommodation services, Accord Care boasts a robust support coordination team and a highly skilled clinical team, including a clinical nurse and registered nurses. This enables the organization to handle complex cases and high-intensity supports effectively.

Accord Care is also deeply involved in charitable activities. The organization participated in the CEO Sleep Out for St. Vincent de Paul Society (St. Vinny’s) and the Push Up Challenge, reflecting its commitment to community service. Johnson highlighted the Accord Outreach Programme, which was established by the organization’s founder. “We started with our very first participant who was made homeless, so one of our mantras is that everybody deserves a home,” Johnson said.

The Accord Outreach Programme operates out of Logan and provides various community services, including food parcels and support with forms and applications, particularly for NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) applications. The program is primarily run by volunteers and student placements, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to community involvement and support.

As the relationship manager for Accord Care, Johnson expressed her enthusiasm for the CEO Sleep Out, an event designed to raise awareness and funds for homelessness. “It was a big eye-opener and a phenomenal experience,” she remarked, advocating for more NDIS providers to join the initiative in the future.

For those interested in learning more or seeking assistance from Accord Care, Johnson advised contacting the organization through various channels, including LinkedIn, their website, or their main phone line at 3252 2068.

Accord Care continues to set a high standard in the accommodation and support services sector, demonstrating a deep commitment to improving lives and fostering community spirit.

  • New Fire Station for Springfield to Boost Emergency Services

The rapidly growing community of Greater Springfield will soon see improved emergency response capabilities with the announcement of a new fire station. Charis Mullen, the representative for the Jordan electorate, shared this exciting development during a recent segment on West Bremer Radio.

Mullen, who has been a strong advocate for enhanced emergency services in the area, confirmed that a new fire and rescue station will be built in Augustine Heights. This new facility will join the existing emergency services cluster on Gateway Drive, adjacent to the ambulance and police stations, creating a comprehensive emergency services hub.

“Currently, we are serviced by the Camira and Ripley fire stations, which do an amazing job. However, given the growth in Greater Springfield, we have always aimed to have our own dedicated station,” Mullen explained. Despite some initial site issues causing delays, construction is set to commence soon, much to the community’s relief.

In addition to the new fire station, Mullen highlighted other significant projects in the Jordan electorate. One such project is the Springfield Central State High School Senior Campus. Initially delayed due to stabilized enrollment numbers, this project is now back on track, with plans to open in 2029 or 2030. Community consultations are currently underway to ensure the new campus meets the needs and expectations of future students and parents.

Mullen also discussed the upcoming upgrade of the Logan Motorway, a critical freight route and one of the region’s most congested areas. The Queensland Government, in collaboration with Transurban, plans to add new lanes and upgrade interchanges to improve traffic flow and support economic growth in the Ipswich region.

Furthermore, Mullen expressed her gratitude to the community for their overwhelming support following a fire that affected a local charity, “Formally Ever After Qld Inc.” The charity, which provides formal wear to students in need, received over 100 donations of dresses and suits after the incident, showcasing the community’s generosity and solidarity.

These developments underscore the ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and services in the Jordan electorate, ensuring the community is well-equipped to handle its growing needs.

  • New Goodna Park Revitalizes Community Spirit

Ipswich residents are thrilled with the recent reopening of the R.J. Richardson Park in Goodna, now commonly referred to as the New Goodna Park, which has undergone significant revitalization. The park, which was severely affected by floods, has been completely rebuilt and is now open for families to enjoy.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding shared the exciting news during a recent broadcast on West Bremer Radio. “The R.J. Richardson Park in Goodna was obviously revamped after being flooded. It’s been completely rebuilt and now features a huge paddle steamboat structure for kids to play on, an indigenous canoe moored on a rocky riverbed, a Flying Fox, fitness equipment, and more barbecues and seating,” she said. The park, located next to the Goodna District Rugby League Club, has become a new centerpiece for the community.

The redevelopment of R.J. Richardson Park was made possible through funding from the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with the Ipswich City Council. “I want to thank the state government for their contribution. It’s great to see such support for our community spaces,” Mayor Harding added.

The revitalization of New Goodna Park has been met with enthusiasm from local residents. Families are encouraged to visit the park, bring their picnic blankets, and make a day of it. The new features are designed to cater to a wide range of ages and interests, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The National Tree Planting Day is scheduled for this Saturday, with activities planned at both Tight Family Park in Bundamba and Cribb Park. The Ipswich Hospital Foundation’s Park to Park run is also taking place this Sunday, marking its 20th anniversary as a major fundraiser for the foundation.

These developments and events reflect Ipswich’s commitment to enhancing community life and providing spaces and activities that promote health, engagement, and cultural celebration. The reopening of New Goodna Park stands as a testament to the city’s resilience and dedication to creating vibrant, inclusive public spaces.
