Ipswich City Council continues to foster growth in the CBD, with several new businesses preparing to open in the bustling Nicholas Street Precinct. Among them are Sparkles Car Wash, offering convenient car cleaning services while shoppers explore the area, and Kicking In, a premium seafood restaurant specializing in crabs. Both businesses add to the vibrant offerings in the city center.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding shared her excitement about the additions during an interview with West Bremer Radio, highlighting the precinct’s ongoing transformation. “Since May, Council has approved six new leases, and two businesses are finalising their paperwork,” Harding said. With Hoyts set to open later this year and Hotel Commonwealth on track for a possibly early then expected opening, the CBD is evolving into a lively destination for residents and visitors alike.
In addition to business development, the Council has launched community consultations to revitalize Riverheart Parklands, which has been impacted by repeated flooding. “We’re looking at making the park more flood-resilient while improving accessibility for everyone,” Harding explained. Residents can have their say on the redevelopment by participating in consultations through Shape Your Ipswich until September 29.
The Council also renewed its partnership with the Ipswich Regional Chamber of Commerce, contributing $35,000 annually over the next two years to support local businesses. Harding emphasized the importance of this collaboration, which includes mentorship programs and business expos aimed at fostering strong relationships with the city’s business community.
Mayor Harding also participated in the Premier’s welcome home dinner for Olympians and Paralympians, celebrating the achievements of Ipswich athletes, including Molly O’Callaghan, Ella Ramsey, and Taymon Kenton-Smith.

In a bid to address rising living costs, the Queensland Labor Party has unveiled a comprehensive plan to reduce petrol prices. This announcement is part of a broader suite of cost-of-living measures aimed at alleviating financial pressures on residents.
State MP for Bundamba Lance McCallum highlighted the Labor’s strategy during a recent interview on West Bremer Radio, stating that if re-elected in October, the government will implement policies to curb petrol price hikes. “We’re going to ban stations from raising the price of their fuel more than once per day and limit increases to five cents per litre,” McCallum explained. Additionally, Labor plans to establish 12 publicly owned petrol stations that will sell petrol on a cost-recovery basis to foster competition and drive down prices.
This initiative joins other measures already in place, such as 50-cent train fares and a 20% discount on vehicle registration, which collectively aim to mitigate the cost of living. “Queenslanders have told us that cost of living is their number one challenge and their number one priority,” McCallum said.
The 50-cent fare initiative has already proven popular, with McCallum personally taking advantage of the reduced fare to travel from Goodna to Brisbane for a cabinet meeting. The program saved Queenslanders over $1 million in fares on its first day, demonstrating substantial community support.
In addition to transport and fuel cost relief, McCallum also celebrated the state’s recent achievements in sports and infrastructure. He lauded the success of local athletes in the Paris Olympics, particularly 14-year-old gold medalist Arissa True and swimmer Molly O’Callaghan. These victories come as Queensland gears up to host the 2032 Olympics, an event already generating significant investment and economic activity in the region.
Furthermore, McCallum announced an $8.9 million investment in the Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing community facilities. This investment will support a variety of sports and recreational activities, benefiting local families and sports clubs.

Ipswich City Council’s Fire Station 101 up in Limestone Street has been transformed into a multi-arts hub, breathing new life into the space and providing a vibrant venue for local artists and performers. Mayor Teresa Harding highlighted this exciting development during a Tuesday morning interview on West Bremer Radio, emphasising the positive feedback from the Ipswich Arts Advisory Group and attendees at the 2023 Creators of Ipswich Summit.
“The Drowsy Chaperone,” a recent production hosted at the transformed hub, has drawn significant praise. Despite not catching a full performance, Mayor Harding appreciated the 1920s-themed setup and the dedication of the cast. The show’s success is evident, with nearly every performance sold out, adding to the anticipation for future productions.
In other cultural news, the city is preparing for the upcoming Galvanized Festival of Heritage. Scheduled for Saturday, August 31st, the festival will feature the Indigenous Wild Food and Cultural Festival for the first time in Ipswich. Previously held in Brisbane, this event attracts thousands of visitors and promises to be a highlight, featuring talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, food and cooking demonstrations, cultural workshops, performances, and fireworks.
Mayor Harding also shared positive updates on the financial support provided by the council, including a $21,500 grant to ensure the continued success of the Galvanized Festival. The council’s commitment to heritage and culture is clear, with initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement and preserving local traditions.
In sports news, Ipswich City Council has secured over $18 million under the SEQ Livability Fund. This substantial funding will be used to expand the Redbank Plains Recreational Reserve and the Tivoli Sporting Complex, providing additional fields, enhanced facilities, and improved lighting. These developments are set to benefit various local sports clubs, including the Musketeers Baseball Club, Thunder Cricket Club, and Collingwood Park AFL Club.
Furthermore, the Ipswich Jets celebrated a significant victory, with their netball team winning the state title. The Sapphires triumphed with a 59-50 score, marking their second premiership since 2019. Mayor Harding praised the team’s performance and the seamless integration of the netball girls with the broader Jets community.
As Ipswich continues to grow and thrive, the transformation of Fire Station 101 and other initiatives underscore the council’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and engaged community.

In a vibrant Saturday afternoon broadcast, West Bremer Radio’s “All Ability Hour” hosted by DJ Sparky and Patty from Focal Community Services, highlighted significant community programs supporting individuals with disabilities. The show welcomed two notable guests, Ainsley from In-Person Creative and Karen from Connect Fest, both contributing profoundly to the local disability sector.
Ainsley, an educator from Mount Ommaney Special School, discussed her innovative drama program designed for young people with intellectual and multiple disabilities. The program, inspired by the UK’s Open Theatre, employs nonverbal practices using music, props, and improvisation to engage participants. “We aim to promote agency and capability, allowing our students to connect and have fun,” Ainsley explained. Her sessions, conducted every Saturday, welcome families and support workers, fostering a supportive, inclusive community.
Karen, well-known in the community as the “Pink Lady” for her vibrant pink attire, introduced Connect Fest, an initiative aimed at bridging the gap between disability service providers and families. As a mother to an autistic son, Karen’s motivation stemmed from personal experience navigating the complexities of the NDIS. Connect Fest offers local events providing information and support to families, demystifying the process and offering direct access to helpful providers. “Our goal is to support families and show that the NDIS can be a beneficial scheme,” Karen emphasized.
The discussion also touched upon the importance of the NDIS and the challenges families face in understanding and utilizing their plans effectively. Both guests underscored the significance of community support and the positive impact of well-informed service providers.
Listeners were encouraged to connect with Ainsley’s program through Mount Ommaney Special School and to join Karen’s upcoming Connect Fest event in Ipswich on September 17th. For more details, Ainsley can be reached at 0484 907 427 and Karen through her website and social media channels.
The broadcast concluded with promises of more engaging content in the coming weeks, continuing the mission of highlighting vital community services and support for all abilities.
