Folks in Charleston WV have long enjoyed going to their local Pies & Pints pizza restaurant — not only for pizza, but also for its excellent craft beer service.
Located on Capitol Street in the heart of downtown, Pies & Pints is usually the busiest restaurant on the block. Many people are curious how they maintain such an eager mob of thirsty patrons. It doesn’t just happen by accident.
Their success lies largely in hiring devoted and competent staff to lead their well-thought-out beer sales program. While the chain has 17 stores, its Charleston store, which is among the company’s smallest in size, is normally its top craft beer-selling store.

Tyler at the taps
Tyler knows beer
Even though many of the stores in the Pies & Pints chain have more taps than the 20 found in the Charleston WV store, under Tyler’s leadership the Charleston store continues to lead at selling beer. Tyler must be doing something right.
Tyler gets a lot of mileage from the West Virginia-brewed beers on his taps. He says that many of the fastest-selling ones come from Weathered Ground Brewery, The Peddler Brewery, Greenbrier Valley Brewing, and Big Timber Brewing. For other American craft brewers, he says beers from Stone Brewing and Sierra Nevada Brewing move well for him. Among imported labels, he generates big sales with German brewers Weinstephaner and Bitburger.
Who says a pizza specialist restaurant in West Virginia can’t move tons of excellent craft beer? You just need to talk to Tyler James to see how it’s done.
