What if music isn’t really about music?

This week on The Frankie & Jess Podcast, we sit down with Caleb Chapman—founder of Soundhouse, creator of one of the nation’s premier youth music programs and director of the world-renowned Crescent Super Band.

From growing up north of Boston to building an internationally recognized music program in Utah, Caleb shares the unlikely moments that changed the course of his life: a Journey cassette on his 10th birthday, a teacher who told him his lips were too big to play saxophone, and a music camp his mom sent him to instead of soccer.

But this conversation goes far beyond music.

We talk about aging parents, raising kids differently than we were raised, why young people quit music, and how performance may be one of the most important skills for the future.

Founded in 1998, Soundhouse has become one of the most decorated youth music programs in the country, with alumni connected to bands like Imagine Dragons and performances at Carnegie Hall and major festivals around the world.

This summer, Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band will represent Utah on a national stage as part of America’s 250th birthday celebrations in Washington, D.C. The ensemble has been invited to perform during the America 250 events surrounding our nation’s Semi quincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

As artificial intelligence rapidly changes the world around us, Caleb argues that the human ability to connect, perform, and be fully present may become our greatest advantage.

This isn’t just a conversation about music.

It’s a conversation about what makes us human.
