Miriam Chickering is my good friend as well as an exceptional nurse. She recently had to deal with the severe, emergency, health crisis of her father hundreds of miles away from her. For me, it brought up memories of many such situations. It occurred to me that this happens to EVERY nurse at some time in their career. However, I do not remember hearing it discussed in any detail. It is one thing when a patient presents at your work and the family looks to you to save their life. It is quite another thing when that family is yours and the life is someone you love.
