It was OK. I didn't realize that it was a short story. I think that I will try more of her books later. It seemed to me that it was geared more to the late teens or early twenty something person. I was a sweet love story but because it took me all of 20-25 minutes to read it I went back and re-read it because sometimes I put it on text to speech and tend to go to sleep and I thought that I had hit the wrong tab and had skipped pages. I will look for more of her writings and try them. I hope to try some more of her books in the near future.

A good story that also upholds religious principals

Good light story for those who want some light reading.

I like for a light read a "Historical Fiction' I like those that are set either the experiences on the way west ie. the wagon trains over the passes and the final arrival at the destination

The other like I have is after the arrival season by season of building homes and schools.

This book satisfied me on several of these issues plus some romance a little different to our day

It was just over 2 hours and I couldn't finish it, the story was bad and the narrator worse.It's been on my wish list for a while so I thought here's the opportunity for a short book to listen to. I'll never get that hour back!

Cool point of view.

Few these days remember the core of the hippi movment. This modern young character stays true to the beliefs that make her who she is- a hippi. Love the play on an old way of being with the new stigmas youg people have to suffer through. I laughed several times at the amount of patience Amy has with the world. I enjoyed this book very much.Thank you Michel King for the good read.

my thoughts on even hippies get the blues

I received this book for a honest review for a blog tour and am happy I did. At first I will admit I was skeptical about this book. Even passed up the first chance to read it. Why? Wasn't sure if I could read a book with that title if it was a new age deal or not. But than I said bad you're judging a book by it's title and not its content so I gave it a whorl and loved it.

Travis was a beautiful man. A kind gentle soul who help Amy become comfortable with her changing self and with being herself. He loved her for what was on the inside and not for appearances. Amy needed this kind of man and he delivered in so many ways.

Amy's philosophy in life was to be happy, not harm others and live her life how she wanted and on her terms. A interesting philosophy to say the least. She did get insulted alot and that was because she was misunderstood. Her outward looks didn't help again judging by appearance and what was on the inside a lesson we all must heed well. Never judge something or someone by the outside but what is within. We can miss out on something special if we do. Amy is in a crap job but there so she can get her artwork sold and get it going.

She meets some interesting characters that test her resolve. Her boss Owen and officer pierce are two such characters how she remained kind after those two I don't know. Adam who will crack you up tested her as well but not in a bad way.

This is a book about Amy and how she grows. She learns to be more at peace with herself and even finds love. Love that helps her heal and become better in tuned with herself. A wonderful read that at times will have you rolling laughing just with the thoughts this girl has but mainly smiling over how things evolve and how she evolves over time. I am glad I gave this book a chance and learned the most valuable lesson of all never judge a book or someone by its outside, name or cover but by the content within.

Solid read.

4 "How to Begin" stars

This is unlike any other book I have ever read before. Please note that although this book has elements of a dark romance, it is labeled women's fiction, not romance. All that said, I do believe there is a love story embedded in this book, albeit not one with all the traditional elements typically included in a romance novel. So if you're looking for a story that will leave you warm and fuzzy, then this is not it. On the other hand, if you want a glimpse into what causes the oppressed to become evil, and the common to rebel against the order, then look no further.

When college student, Irina, a Romanian orphan who is adopted by Romanian parents, meets an older, mysterious Romanian man, Andrei, they are instantly attracted to one another. Before long she moves in with him and becomes his kept woman. Spending her days leisurely using his wealth to shop, her life becomes one mission to remain attractive to him. Soon she finds that even though she had a promising college career, she is willing to give it all up for Andrei. Even as Andrei's true nature becomes clearer to her, including the illicit nature of his ventures, Irina is incapable of escaping.

When one of Andrei's two close business associates out of no where announces that he is getting married to a young Russian girl no one has previously met, Irina suspects that she is a mail order bride. Knowing that with his money Andrei's associate could easily get any American bride he wanted, Irina suspects a more nefarious reason for his choice. Not wanting to pry, Irina and Elena become friends. Spending their days shopping and blissfully ignorant of the men's "business" activities, and their nights shrouded in privacy from one another as to their partners' passionate interests, Irina's and Elena's strengthens. Eventually it is the friendship, that forces Irina to "escape", even when she feels as if she can't, and leads to her revenge.

I have to admit that I had a hard time getting into this book. The style employed of switching back and forth in time and between the main story and the Romanian tales was difficult to follow at first. Eventually it all comes together but it takes some determination to get to that point.

All in all, I found In the Red, to be a thought provoking read.

This book is such a great book. I Really think that Pat ballard is a geart writer. I have read all most everyone of her books.

Lushly-curved Heroine

Pam Spencer is determined to see justice done. Her wheelchair-bound brother deserves better than to be fired by the company which caused his accident in the first place!

Strapped for cash and unable to qualify for insurance coverage, Tom Spencer will never be able to afford the surgery he so desperately needs in order to walk again. So when his former employer, Bainbridge Corporation, takes out an ad in the local newspaper searching for a new heir to inherit the family fortune, sister Pam seizes the chance to right a past wrong, hoping beyond hope that her brash sincerity will win the day for them.

But Pam never reckoned on the hurdles that would be strewn along the path to Tom's future happiness; especially not the clause about having to move into the very same house as the incredibly sexy, utterly cruel disowned heir, Reese Bainbridge!

What worked for me:

I thought the overall premise of the book was intriguing, and the classified ad was a clever way to get all of the characters interacting with each other right from the get-go!

I genuinely liked Pam and could see from the start that she was a good person; one whom I'd want for a friend.

I can't go into it without spoiling plot points, but there was something revealed about Reese's history which I found rather touching. I only wish I'd discovered it earlier in the story so that I would have understood him and liked him sooner.

Size-wise Pam was a throw-back to the 1950s voluptuous pinup era, with a little extra padding besides.

What didn't work for me:

I wanted to like the hero. I truly did. Physically, he was the kind of guy who would knock me right off my feet. ;^) But he was so damaged.. so petulant and unkind to Pam at times, that I just couldn't see myself having the patience to untangle this gorgeous guy from his troubled past. (I would have gone nuts from having it out with him as often as Pam did.)

Well, I've mentioned before that there is currently a strong trend in featuring virginal or nearly virginal plus-size heroines in contemporary romances. I hope Ms. Ballard also has a book starring an extremely predatory curvy gal for those of us looking for a Mae West "Just-Let-Me-At-Him" type to live vicariously through.

Enjoyable if cheesy at times

3.5 stars actually, but rounding up since I did enjoy this even though it was far from perfect.

I tend to be a fan of angst and this was much more fluffy than my usual fair. The heroine had a pet raccoon and a Indian friend who spoke like Tonto (cringe). However, it was engaging. The beginning drags a bit with the two being stuck inside her isolated cabin, but after that it definitely picked up. What I liked was that my predictions were either dead wrong or not exactly what I'd expected and that kept me interested.

Basic storyline: the heroine is living alone in her isolated cabin located on what is now Yosemite Nat'l Park. Her father had recently died and that left her and her assortment of animals alone. She knew the government was trying to evict all settlers in the area to make it a national park, but she thought she had the winter since the passes close due to snow.

The hero makes it through just before the big freeze, however. He shows up at her door bleeding from a gunshot wound inflicted by an angry evictee and she nurses him back to health. She is very young, naive, and sheltered. She has no idea how a young lady is supposed to act so she just says and does whatever she feels like. The hero, who's in his 30's is obviously attracted to her but feels he should leave her alone due to her age, inexperience, and the basic situation. However, it doesn't happen that way. And that's about all I'm going to say. I won't spoil the rest. However, I will say that the h was a virgin and there were no multiple partners. I know those are a biggie for some.

A few weird things: There was one sex scene that was lol worthy. If you read it, you'll know exactly which one I was speaking of. Another odd thing was the story takes place shortly after the end of the Civil War and the hero was in the war. He mentions at one point being 'with Jackson'. I really didn't get that, since I automatically think of the Confederate General 'Stonewall' Jackson and don't see why the hero (a native Californian with no ties to the South) would have been in the Confederate army to begin with. If he was, why/how was he being employed by the U.S. government to be their legal representative in evicting the settlers so soon after the war? It just doesn't make sense on several different levels. Possibly I heard wrong, but I could have sworn he mentioned 'Jackson'. *shrugs* Also, the heroine had all these cutesy little folksy sayings and it was WAY overdone.

Good love story with a twist...

This is a good love story with a twist to it. In this book, there are more rocky roads (caused more by other characters than the couple themselves. It is a good book and while I rated 4 stars, a more accurate rating would be 4.5 stars. The author, Regina Puckett did a good job on the plot. I loved all the twists in it, but wanted to strangle a few troublemakers! The narrator did a good job too on her delivery of this book to us.

A Favorite

I've just reread this book, and enjoyed it fully again. It has romance, humor strong honorable men, and a heroine that is unconventional.

Very Amusing

So glad I wasn't put off by the above review. This was a fun read, with some truly hilarious moments. Very much In the comedic style of Georgette Heyer. Implausible yes but fun and pure escapism of course! I do recommend it.

Great!

Little slow but held my interest so well that I read it cover to cover without picking up something else to read which is rare for me. I bought several of Anita Mill's books and I am anxious to read them too.
