During this year's International Women’s Day celebrations, you’re likely to see demonstrators in many cities around the world bearing purple flags and wearing purple ribbons or wristbands. Now International Women's Day actually has three official colours: Purple, white and green. but it’s fair to say that purple stands above the others as the undisputed colour of feminism in this day and age.
For example, think back to the poignant symbolism of Kamala Harris wearing a purple coat during her inauguration as the first ever female Vice President of the United States in January 2021. That choice echoed previous inauguration events which saw 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the current First Lady Jill Biden also wear shades of purple.
But has it always been this way? Why has purple endured? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
