For Catholics, the definition of marriage is a pretty set thing-- and that's freeing! It means that God's grace is operative to help us pursue the ends of marriage with our spouse!
Traditionally, there are three ends of sacrament of matrimony-- conjugal fidelity, procreation/education of children, and the permanence of the sacrament. There's a minimalist approach to them, and a maximalist approach (we recommend aiming for maximalist...).
