Growing up in a devout Catholic family in 1960s Germany, Anneliese Michel was pretty, vibrant and caring. Attending mass twice a week, her religious practices became more extreme as she grew older, and were heavily influenced by her mother. All of this changed however, when at 16 she suffered convulsions that led to a diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy. What transpired from this baffled doctors and psychologists, and led to the worst case of exorcism ever recorded.

Welcome to the 38th episode of Wild Society!

Gerald Cavanagh sat at a San Francisco gay bar, taking in the nightlife around him. An attractive young man approached the World War 2 veteran. He handed Cavanagh a piece of paper. The young man had drawn Cavanagh’s portrait on that piece of paper. The sketch was good. Really good.

After talking a bit, they left the bar and headed for Ocean Beach – a common hookup spot for gay men. As the two got close on the beach, Cavanagh’s new friend pulled out a knife and stabbed him at least 17 times. Cavanagh had just become the victim of the serial killer who would eventually become known as The Doodler. Other gay men would have their fates sealed after being handed a striking sketch by the handsome young man.

This story takes you through the decades as police and journalists join together in hopes to solve the mystery of the illusive artist.


This week we discuss the Stonewall Riots or the Stonewall Uprising [as some people like to refer to it today] which took place in New York City in 1969, and began the modern day Gay revolution movement.

On October 17th , 2006, New Orleans police received a phone call from the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel. A man had jumped from the 7th floor. What transpired from this event and what was found in his back pocket led investigators to find one of the most heinous and heartbreaking crimes in New Orleans history.

The reincarnation case of Shanti Devi was one that not only shocked the world but also created interest from Mahatma Gandhi. At just four years old, Shanti began talking about her past life. She began going into more details around age 8 and revealed that her previous name was Lugdi Devi and that she had been married to a man named Kedar Nath. She told her parents that she died shortly after giving birth to a son and that they lived in Mathura. After a large investigation by a group appointed by Gandhi, all claims from Shanti were found to be true. So how did such a young girl remember so many details from her past life? Was it really true or all just a big hoax?

Herbert Mullin, also known as the “Earthquake Killer”, terrorized the Santa Cruz area of California during his 4 month murder spree. Although police were unaware they were dealing with a serial killer at first, upon his arrest Mullin confessed to killing 13 people. Equally shocking was his reasoning for the murders.

The odds of being bitten by a venomous snake aren't all that high. The odds of being bitten by a venomous snake and then surviving a bear attack are even less. But the odds of doing both and THEN surviving a shark attack? Well, it's 1 out of 893,000,000,000,000. Given those odds, consider Dylan McWilliams really lucky, or really, really unlucky, because he survived all three. This is his story.

In the 1990’s Colombia’s young homeless boys began to disappear quickly off the streets. After numerous mass graves were found, investigators began to think they had a serial killer on the loose. After putting together a profile of the killer, based on evidence left at a crime scene, investigators were able to narrow down the suspect list to 25 men. On April 22, 1999 Luis Garavito was arrested for the attempted rape of a boy. After being interrogated for 18 hours, he broke and admitted to killing 140 boys in 54 cities. Ultimately Garavito was charged with killing 172 young males but officials believe the number may be closer to 400. Change.org Petition

At the base of Mt. Fuji lies a dense sprawling forest called Aokigahara. A popular tourist attraction, the dense forest provides countless winding trails and caves. But some people who enter the forest, never intend on leaving. Is something sinister happening inside the “Sea of Trees”?

In April of 1996, James Smith walked into a police station confessing he had accidently killed his girlfriend of three years, 17 year old Kelly Anne Bates. What transpired from that event became one of the most horrific cases of abuse and torture ever recorded in modern day history.

A small village tucked away in the Iya Valley of Japan now has more scarecrow dolls than people. The dolls outnumber the residents ten to one. Tsukimi Ayano has made over 400 dolls that resemble people who have passed or people who once lived in the village and have left. The town of Nagoro lures around 3,000 people a year from all over the world who are interested in seeing these unique, life-size dolls. We will let you decide if you think it is creepy or cool!

Around 8 p.m. on March 20, 1974, a man in a white Ford Escort cut off a maroon Rolls-Royce limousine as it drove down a London road. A man in the limousine got out to stop the Ford Escort’s driver who was now walking toward the limousine, thinking he was a disgruntled motorist. From six feet away, the Escort’s driver pulled out a gun and shot the man. The gunman's mission to kidnap Princess Anne had begun.

In 1998, Amy Lynn Bradley went missing from a Royal Caribbean cruise liner. After investigators found no evidence of suicide or falling overboard, the case became a world-wide mystery. Did Amy simply decide to run away? Or was something sinister at the heart of her disappearance?

In the 1600’s pirates roamed the seas of the Caribbean in hunt of treasure and goods to be stolen. It was unheard of for females to be pirates. Most women on the ship were there to cook and clean for the crew. Anne Bonny and Mary Read pushed cultural norms when they became pirates aboard John “Calico Jack” Rackham's ship. Fighting alongside the men, the women were successful in overtaking many ships, often times leading the operations. Although they both had unusual upbringings, the women made themselves known as two of the most famous badass female pirates in history.
