New York City in the 1970’s was full of freedom and fun as the disco era took over. But when day turned to night, many people feared for their life as a serial killer roamed the streets. The media dubbed him the “.44 Caliber Killer” due to his weapon and bullet of choice. He prowled the streets of New York City late at night in search for young women with long brown hair. He would then shoot with intentions to kill. He began taunting police with hand written letters and gave himself the name “Son of Sam.” After being on the hunt for 13 months, killing six and injuring many others, David Berkowitz, known as "Son of Sam", was finally arrested outside of his apartment. Why did he kill? Why did he pick the name "Son of Sam"? And what is he up to now?

Ronald Gene Simmons is at the heartbreaking center of the worst family murder spree in American history. During the Christmas holiday season of 1987, Simmons killed 14 family members and two others in smalltown Arkansas. Simmons' deadly massacre included tricking four of his own children into thinking they were about to receive Christmas gifts, right before he killed them. Hear what led to this unimaginable tragedy.

In the sleepy town of Amityville, New York, a large Dutch Colonial style home sits elegantly along the Amityville River on a picturesque street of other comfortable waterfront houses. As you drive down the quiet street, passing the stately mansion at what was once 112 Ocean Ave, it’s almost unfathomable to imagine the horrors that happened to the Dafeo family in the early morning hours of November 13, 1974. What transpired from that event forever changed the town of Amityville, and shot the once peaceful town into permanent spotlight.

Authorities struggled for 2 years to find teenage Colton Harris Moore aka the Barefoot Bandit. He was on the run after countless burglaries. Colton continued to baffle the community when he was successful at stealing and flying multiple airplanes, most of the time while barefoot, and without any formal training. For Colton it was all the thrill of the game, and his extreme passion for airplanes.

Welcome to the 26th episode of Wild Society!

In this weeks murder case we discuss the infamous serial killer, Rodney Alcala. Nicknamed the “Dating Game Killer,” because of his time on the show, Rodney Alcala scoured the country hunting young women. Alcala used his unique charm to convince them he was a photographer and ultimately tortured, raped, strangled, and killed them. He was convicted of 8 murders but is believed to have killed many more. Officials are still trying to find information on possible victims today through photographs found in Alcala’s possession.

In 1920 a series of photos captured the attention of the world. The photos, taken by two young girls, Frances Griffith and Elsie Wright, were taken while playing in the garden of Elsie’s Cottingley village home in West Yorkshire. The subject of these photos baffled everyone from photographic experts to spiritualists and became the most widely recognized photos in the world.

Beginning on Dec. 30, 1884, nighttime brought a sense of dread to the residents of the budding city of Austin, Texas. A killer was stalking the streets late at night, picking locks on cabins and homes, sneaking inside and using knives and axes to kill. In many of the cases, others were seriously wounded but survived. The killer earned the moniker, the Servant Girl Annihilator, as many of his victims were staff members at residences across Austin. But just as the city was on the brink of chaos, the killings mysteriously stopped. But why?

In the early 1900’s men were practically required to wear a hat anytime they left the house. Just as fashion can still be today, there were many styles and many “rules” to be followed. In the early 20th century the most seriously followed fashion rule was that of not wearing your straw hat after September 15th. Eventually, if you were caught in public wearing your straw hat after this arbitrary date, you weren’t just subject to ridicule, your hat was fair game to be knocked off and stomped on in the street by any passerby. By 1922 this came to head with the infamous New York Straw Hat Riots.

Edmund Kemper III is one of the world’s most notorious serial killers, and is often referred to as “The Co-ed Killer.” Beginning with a mother that was anything but loving and ending with her demise, we find out why and how Edmund killed 10 people between 1964 through 1973. His crimes were brutal, but what we learned from them changed the course of criminal investigation history forever.

The entire world watched as a homemade helium filled balloon, shaped like a UFO, soared through the Colorado sky in October of 2009. The Heene family and officials were panicked as they believed that 6 year old Falcon Heene was inside the balloon. After traveling 50 miles, the balloon finally landed, but the boy wasn’t inside. He was soon found hiding in the attic of the family home. Was the boy scared to get in trouble or was the whole thing a hoax?

When things didn’t go her way, Jill moved on to the next man. It seems as though she got away with murdering her third husband William Clark Coit Jr, but wasn’t as lucky when her son testified against her for murdering her eighth husband, Gerald “Gerry” Boggs.

Followers of folk legends and admirers of the paranormal are certainly familiar with the Bermuda Triangle and perhaps even the Michigan triangle. But one lesser-known cousin of these areas infamous for their strange disappearances over a five year stretch holds more than its fair share of tantalizing mysteries: the Bennington Triangle of Vermont.
