WCE Season 8, Episode 40 (Monday, August 24th)

We'll start with the schedule for this season (0:00). Is the ACC going to actually expand with Stanford, Cal and SMU? ESPN has ponied up more money, but does any of it really matter? (5:30) LSU DL Maason Smith has been suspended for one game by the NCAA... and the reasoning is ridiculous. (8:55) Georgia loses a backup RB for the year, and others are dealing with injuries as well... how much depth do they have? (11:02)

Reggie Bush is filing suit against the NCAA in a defamation case, and while I don't like the NCAA... this is a pretty flimsy case. (12:35) Rapid fire College Football news (14:29), including South Carolina State coach retiring, new theme song for College Gameday, Sam Jackson won the Cal QB job, Big 12 commish says he's pulling for Texas Tech to beat Texas, and Happy 2 year anniversary to the Alliance!

Next, we dive into our Week 0 CFB Preview (18:31), including which game will have the best ratings, what's the most exciting game, who has the most to gain or lose, and who is the most likely underdog outright winner? From there, we tackle the Viewing Guide for Week 0 (23:07) before I give you every bet I made in the preseason (26:15), and then... what I'm sure you're all interested in... my numbers and very brief analysis on every game on the board for Week 0 (30:07). Pac-12 Crisis

• Colorado Departure: The exit of Colorado has put the Pac-12 on shaky ground. Their departure to another conference was a significant loss that could've been mitigated with quick action, such as offering SMU an invitation.

• Media Rights Deal with Apple: The new media rights deal, primarily streaming through Apple+, is not favorable to the Pac-12. At $20M per school, with the potential to escalate based on subscriptions, it's a risk that many school presidents are reluctant to take, given the small fan bases on the west coast and the risk of not engaging casual fans.

• Past Failures: The comparison to the Larry Scott era and the failed Pac-12 Network that reached less than 15 million homes is apt. Why would they repeat a mistake that's already been made? The previous media venture failed to gain traction and was a financial disaster.

• Arizona Schools and Utah: The meeting between Arizona and Arizona State's Board of Regents to potentially leave the Pac-12 is a critical juncture. If they decide to leave, Utah might also follow, despite reluctance due to BYU. This will further decimate the conference.

Big Ten Expansion?

• Interest in Pac-12 Schools: The Big Ten's consideration of adding Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and California is real. Oregon and Washington seem to be the more likely candidates, with financial considerations playing a role in who ultimately joins.

• The Notre Dame Factor: There is a potential play for Notre Dame, although that remains uncertain. A major player like Notre Dame could reshape the Big Ten's prospects.

• Financial Considerations: FOX and other networks like NBC or ESPN might be willing to take on the additional costs of these new schools. It adds inventory for FS1, but there are also potential options with Amazon or providing NBC more exclusivity.

ACC and Florida State

• Florida State's Dilemma: Florida State is voicing dissatisfaction with the ACC's revenue distribution. The current deal with ESPN, made unanimously in 2016, has not panned out as expected, with declining cable viewership.

• Public Statements: The public nature of these grievances suggests a real desire to leave the ACC. It's a move that can affect recruiting and the overall perception of the program. If they do not have an exit plan, this could turn into a fiasco.

• Grant of Rights Obstacle: The legal hurdles to overcome the ACC's grant of rights through 2036 are significant. It's unclear how Florida State can navigate this without a hefty buyout and legal maneuvering.

Conclusion

• The shifting landscape of college football is creating a whirlpool of uncertainty, strategic moves, and alliances. The Pac-12's fragile state is at the center of this, with decisions by the Arizona schools and potentially Utah set to create significant ramifications.

• The Big Ten's expansion interest is real and could reshape the power dynamics in college football. Meanwhile, Florida State's very public discontent with the ACC adds another layer of complexity to this multifaceted situation.

• Ultimately, it is a dance between money, visibility, tradition, and legal agreements. The coming weeks and months are likely to be filled with more surprises, negotiations, and perhaps even some unprecedented moves.
