  • Thought Leadership and Content: Are they relevant?

    Today’s guest on Winning at Business and Life is Peter Winick. He is the Founder & CEO of Thought Leadership Leverage, based in New York. Over a period of in excess of 20 years, Peter has worked with a wide variety of thought leaders.
    In this interview, Peter elaborates on “Turning foundational ideas into thriving businesses”, a subject which is highlighted on his website. He also shares his own definition of “Thought Leadership”, which to him has two parts – thought and leadership (!). He says that “Thought” is asking question along the lines –  “is it really smart?” and leadership is asking question such as – “what are you doing on aspects you are passionate about and be a leader in that field?”
    He says further that the anti-definition of Thought Leadership is Thoughtless Followership, and we know the latter does abound!
    Peter shares how to maximize content to help grow one’s business.
    Aside from leveraging content, Peter Winick also talks about:

    * The importance of branding and its benefits
    * Intellectual property

    Peter start the day checking on his calendar and making sure it’s a day he wants to have. At the end of the day, he takes a few minutes to reflect on his accomplishment, these rituals booked his days to great effect.
    I encourage you to visit Thought Leadership Leverage to learn more about Peter Winick, what he does and how he can help you in your business.

  • Communication Is A Many Faceted Thing!

    Sari de la Motte is the founder of Forte, a communication consulting firm focusing on non-verbal communication.
    Sari hails from Portland, Oregon, and because of her large volume of work with attorneys, is often referred to as the Attorney Whisperer.
    Sari explains that there’s more to body language than how it is commonly presented.
    According to Sari, there are two basic non-verbal sets, namely:

    * Authoritative body language
    * Approachable body language

    She says that the general rule of thumb is to apply both of the non-verbal sets and that the challenge to clear communication is timing.
    So, when you are trying to send information, use the Authoritative body language and use the Approachable Body Language when seeking information. Sari expands on this in the interview.
    It is interesting how Sari elaborates on her insights into “non-verbal communication” and how it can be valuable when speaking in front of an audience.
    Likewise, she talks about how non-verbal communication/body language starts from the brain- what you’re thinking will get communicated.
    So whether you are a Speaker, Business Owner, Hiring Manager or a Job-seeker, this interview with Sari de la Motte is something you will find very interesting!
    In spite of her seemingly busy schedule, Sari makes sure to write at least 3 pages in the morning about just really anything that is in her brain. Doing so allows her to meditate at the same time.
    You can learn more about Sari de la Motte by visiting her website at www.nonverbalforte.com.

  • An Ancient Leading Principle in Modern World

    Today’s guests are Katy Bray and Zeb Severson, both are partners in life and also partners in establishing Lead with the Lights On.
    Katy describes herself as a Psychic Coach for Game Changers and is a second timer on Winning at Business and Life Podcast.
    Katy and Zeb founded Lead With The Lights On, the foundation of which is  Ayurveda.
    Ayurveda, which means “the science of life” is one of the world’s holistic healing systems that originated in India about 5000 years ago.
    The system, as described by Katy and Zeb, capitalizes on people’s previous experience and is said to be teaching team members such skills as resilience and team synergy, amongst others.
    You must listen to both Katy and Zeb as they elaborate on how the system works.
    For the businesses they work with, both Zeb and Katy help them find their business’ identity as part of the greater business’ eco-system.
    Zeb also talks quite a bit about resilience and the significance of synergy, which I find really fascinating..
    Their program modules include:

    * Leadership Synergy
    * Individual Resiliency
    * Team Synergy
    * Temperaments for Teams and Leaders
    * Idea and Vision Balancing
    * On Purpose Meditation

    Zeb also stresses the importance of meditation and how to do it the right way, and they are giving all of us some help in this regard. See below.
    It is interesting to learn that both of them have one favorite book, The Fifth Discipline by Peter M. Senge, which they both find amazing.
    On daily rituals, while Katy writes at least 3 pages of a letter to her higher self as well as a few minutes of meditation, Zeb writes down inspirations and ideas and does Yoga.
    Katy and Zeb can be contacted through their website at leadwiththelightson.com.
    They are also giving away a great guide on meditation, exclusively for Winning at Business and Life audience. You can download it at Leadwiththelightson.com/jmi – thank you, Katy and Zeb for your generosity!

  • Spelling Out the Path to Leadership #2

    Today’s episode is part two of my interview with Hans Finzel.
    To recap, Hans was the President and CEO of international non-profit WorldVenture for 20 years, serving over 65 countries. Today, he is the President of HDLeaders. He is also a speaker and author of many books that have been translated into over 24 languages.
    In this second interview, Hans shares his thoughts on leading and managing, pointing out that it is not one or the other, it is both. Managers need to lead and Leaders need to manage.
    Here’s a list of some of the words that Hans uses to differentiate leading and managing:
    Leaders

    * Inspire
    * Motivate
    * Look after the well-being of the team, and it’s individuals
    * Ensure team is working well together
    * Innovates
    * Have a long-range perspective
    * Ask questions – “What and Why?”
    * Do the right thing

    Managers

    * Administer
    * Plan
    * Organize
    * Coordinate
    * Focus on systems and structure
    * Have short-range view
    * Do things right

    Hans also elaborates on how he explains the difference between “persistence” and “resilience.
    Also, I find it very interesting to hear what Hans has to say about the common reason many managers find it hard to delegate.

    * Fear of losing authority
    * Fear of the work being done poorly
    * Fear of the work being done better
    * Unwillingness to take the necessary time
    * Fear of depending on others
    * Lack of leadership training and positive delegation experience
    * Fear of losing value in the organization

    For anyone who has the responsibility to lead and manage people, this interview with Hans is a “must listen to” podcast.
    You can learn more about Hans Finzel by visiting his website at hansfinzel.com
    Let me end with this quote that Hans got from his mentor, Howard Hendricks
    “Your career is what you’re paid for and your calling is what you are made for.”

  • Spelling Out the Path to Leadership

    Hans Finzel is a successful author, mentor, speaker and trusted authority in the field of leadership. Hans has trained leaders internationally on five continents and founded HDLeaders in 2012 where he serves as President.  Prior to that, Hans completed twenty years as President and CEO of international non-profit WorldVenture. He is the Author of the Top 10 Ways to Be a Great Leader, an Amazon Bestseller.
    In this interview, Hans elaborates more on his acronym for “LEADERSHIP”. These are:
    “L” Is for Listen and Learn
    “E” Is for Emotional Intelligence
    “A” Is for Accessibility
    “D” Is for Determination
    “E” Is for Effective Communication
    “R” Is for Resilience
    “S” Is for Servant Attitude
    “H” Is for Hands Off Delegation
    “I” Is for Integrity
    “P” Is for the Power of Humility
    Hans also mentions that hardly any behavior can hurt followers more than a leader who doesn’t know how to listen, which I find to be true!.
    On Leadership and Management, Hans says that Leadership is doing the right things while management is doing things right.; that Leadership is about vision, direction, excitement and passion. Management on the other hand is the mechanics of getting the work done.
    The book that had a profound impact in his life is the Necessary Endings by Henry Cloud, which talks about letting go and moving on.
    Other than eating healthy and exercise, Hans goes out on his bike for an hour or two whenever he can. He also starts his day in a hot tub as part of his daily rituals. Hans is a believer of the “power of 3” and applies that to his planning.

  • Is Your Business Stealing Your Soul?

    Today’s guest is Kathy Knowles who hails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
    She is a former HR Director in major corporate America and then decided to be an entrepreneur about 4 years ago. She established her own business, which is all about helping others build their own successful business.
    She is fondly called “the soulful business mentor” as she challenges people to be certain that the business they are building is consistent with their values and aspirations.
    She believes that it is important to align our hearts, souls and our minds, and she is passionate about helping her clients achieve that.
    Kathy sees so many entrepreneurs get “caught in the weeds” of their businesses and not focus on the things that matter most. Her work is to ensure that those things that matter most do get done.
    Also, Kathy Knowles answers the question “is your business stealing your soul?”, which I find a fantastically challenging question.
    Other key topics discussed in this conversation are:

    * Leadership
    * The importance of identifying your “whys”
    * Team profiling
    * Team cohesion

    So whether you are an established business owner or are planning to set up a new business, this podcast is really worth listening to.
    You can visit Kathy Knowles’ website at http://kathyknowles.com or email her at [email protected].
    You can also download her free Ebook called The Ultimate Playbook for Creating Your Dream Team. Just head to www.kathyknowles.com/find-and-fill.
    Kathy is fond of reading books and one of her favorites is by David Hawkins, Power vs. Force, a really amazing book that talks about vibrational frequency.
    And just like many successful entrepreneurs, Kathy practices meditation that has become part of her morning routine.
    Listen now.

    Katja Schleicher who hails from The Hague, a German by birth but sees herself as a true European is our guest for today’s episode on Winning and Business and Life Podcast.
    She is the Founder of Impact Communication Coaching and a fantastic communicator.
    The challenge of communication, or the “heaven and hell of it”, as Katja calls it, is that the quality of it is largely in the eyes of the beholder – so who has the right measuring gauge?
    Katja also believes that the skill of communication is a much underrated one and frequently not seen as a key required skill of the leader. She argues that since approximately 80% of the leaders time is spent communicating, it is extraordinary that it is not given the priority it deserves .
    Effective leadership requires effective communication.
    In the interview, Katja explains the process of developing your communication skills, and shares the biggest communication gaps. Listen to her tips.
    If you haven’t heard about “masculine communication pattern”, then you should listen to Katja as she explains what it is about.
    Katja’s favorite book includes not just one but 3! Namely:

    * The Hundred Year Life by Linda Gratton
    * When Cultures Collide by Richard Lewis, an absolute classic in cultural communication
    * The Listening Leader by Emilio Galli Zugaro

    Katja’s daily ritual is her handwritten (that’s important) To Do List.

  • The Gap Between You and Your Greatness

    I am delighted to interview Leadership Expert and Author, Lolly Daskal, who has written the brilliant “The Leadership Gap: What Gets Between You and Your Greatness” which is available now for ordering.
    Lolly’s credibility as a leadership guru is without question. She has been designated as Top 50 Leadership and Management Expert by Inc. Magazine. Huffington Post honoured her with the title of The Most Inspiring Woman in the World – quite an accolade!
    In the book, which I highly recommend, Lolly talks about recognising that the skills and talents that helped you get the CEO role are not the ones that will keep you there. Those that fail to accept this, don’t last too long.
    Lolly asks the brilliant question: “Who are you being while you are leading?” In the interview, which you can listen to here, Lolly goes deep into that question and there is great learning there.
    To be successful as a leader we need to shift our mindset and Lolly illustrates that so well when she describes the 7 Archetypes we must embody – The Rebel, The Explorer, The Truth Teller, The Hero, The Inventor, The Navigator and The Knight.
    Within each of these archetypes there is the forceful characteristic that propels us forward. However, within that same archetype there is the “shadow” mindset that can undo all that forward momentum. That is the gap!
    In the interview  you  need to listen to what Lolly has to say about how important introspection is to become, and grow, as a successful leader.
    You will also hear about Lolly’s daily ritual which I find amazing – she reads a book every morning between 4:00am and 6:00am, and the writes in her gratitude journal.
    Of all the hundreds of books that Lolly has read, she picks out Viktor Frankl’s brilliant Man’s Search for Meaning which Lolly reads every year.
    As a gift to all listeners there is a free assessment until May 16th 2017 about your leadership style when you pre-order the book on www.leadershipgapbook.com and you can also find Lolly at www.lollydaskal.com where all here social media links are shown.
    Thanks Lolly for a great interview!
