University of Chicago Medical Center medical residents and fellows are forming a union. More than 1,000 of them have announced plans to join the Committee of Interns & Residents, a division of Service Employees International Union. They’ve filed a petition for union election with the National Labor Relations Board. The doctors-in-training say their goal is to improve working conditions and patient care. Union leaders say the residents are overworked and underpaid. Their organizing effort is part of a larger local and national trend involving academic medical institutions.
