  • Are you in the Game?
    Are you in the Game?

I have been passionate about helping people get fit and active over the last 20 plus years.

What is alarming is we gained even more weight over the last year by doing even less than we did before 2020.

An old picture memory popped up on my computer. The picture was of me surfing in the Outer Banks in late spring that year. As I looked at the picture I noticed a father with his 2 daughters. Dad was out of shape and comfortable with standing in ankle deep water with his 2 daughters near him.

Nothing remarkable about the picture, yet the father in the picture was not looking at his daughters. He’s looking at me.

    Why?

Muliple photos show him watching me catch wave after wave. I think the reality is this dad wanted to get in the game. He wanted to be out there with me. Yet reasons prevented him from doing that.

Part the of cool thing I do as a profession is motivate, encourage and strive to get people to find those activities they love to do and go out and do them.

Post 2020 I have not skateboarded, surfed, or kiteboarded as much as I would have liked. As I teach what I preach I will make a point of getting outside and doing the activities that make me come alive more this year.

If you need coaching, accountability and guidance let us know.

  • I’ve Been Living on a Farm for the last 2 Years… Taking out the Trash is a Workout
I’ve Been Living on a Farm for the last 2 Years…Things like Taking the Trash Out Are a Workout…

My wife and I moved to a 5 acre horse farm in 2019. To say it was a lot of work the first year was an understatement. We completely remodeled the entire house. What has been a blessing in disguise has been the amount of physical effort it takes to keep up with the home.

I’ll give you a very real example. Taking out the trash. Such an easy task for me in my previous home. Here I have to take my trash can about 200 meters on a gravel road up hill. This is not an exaggeration. Anyone that comes to our house will mention how we should get a 4-wheeler to take the trash to the street. (I don’t mind)

Cutting the grass, moving logs, bushes, branches, and watching out for wild animals are all par for the course. I once headed to my barn to almost walk into a baby deer resting near the door.

I was shocked to see this little guy there who struggled to stand and walk because of their young age.

The silver lining to all this has been my activity in 2019-2021 has gone up not down.

My question to you is simply this… in 2021 are you more active than you were in 2019?

2020 changed the way many of us do business and live our lives. Many businesses don’t require you to go to the office. Normal activity like walking has decreased. Many don’t need to leave their houses to do normal tasks they once did.

Weight gain for the average person who gained weight in 2020 was 29 pounds.

I feel more compelled than ever to help coach and motivate our clients to train. We are committed to helping you stay fit and active in a world where activity has fallen off a cliff.

Our Drop the Weight Challenge is wrapping up next week. My weekly coaching calls have gone well and I have recorded all of those calls. If you are interested watching our nutrition program videos- please let me know and I’ll get you access.

Our Cardio Challenge for May will be starting soon. We would love for you to take part in our next challenge. The cardio challenge is a great excuse to be more active during a beautiful time of year.

Finally, finding ways to be active in your day to day life is key. In moving to a horse farm I have found a way to be more active.

What ways can you find in your life to be more active and healthy?

Here are some of the most common pitfalls of short-term diets and short-term fitness challenges.

  • I Participated in the 1st Body for Life Challenge…

I remember the first time I did a Fitness Challenge. The year was 1997 and I was a broken athlete. I was in the middle of Red Shirting my Freshman year of college.

My knees were injured and I hadn’t training with weights for about 3 months.

I had lost about 10 pounds of muscle and I was pretty depressed.

Along came the first Fitness Challenge of its kind called…

Body for Life by Bill Phillips. The challenge was simple… enter into a 12 week challenge, lift weights, eat healthy, do cardio and measure your weight and take pictures before and after.

I did the challenge… gained 12 pounds of muscle and saw a great transformation.

Where I got this right… was I continued to train after the challenge ended.

Training in phases, creating program design, measuring your results along the way ensure for longer-term wins.

This is why I don't like short term challenges if they are not connected to longer term programming.

Finally, this is why myself and my team of trainers work on our clients biomechanics first, improve movement and balance of the body, and train our clients in a progressive way. Building from the ground up.

Laying that good foundation. Then continuing to move forward toward your goals.

  • 1 of Arnold's Secrets to His Success... Fitness Challenges

Arnold’s Secret to his Success-The Value of Doing Fitness Challenges-

Arnold Schwarzenegger prepared for his movie career in short spurts of time.

He was known for getting 6 weeks, 8 weeks , and sometimes 6 months to get ready for a role.

He enjoyed the preparation because it reminded him of his massive success in Professional Body Building.

Arnold was Mr. Olympia 7 times. Mr. Olympia is the Super Bowl of body building.

He prepared for his competitions in phases throughout the year. During these blocks of training there was time to really get focused for his event like the 100 days before the competition.

There were phases where he rested more, went off the rails with his nutrition, and phases where he pushed and lifted heavy.

He trained throughout the year but pushed hard at different times.

The lesson works for us now.

One of the biggest pitfalls for people who do short challenges, and or short nutrition challenges is embracing the short-term challenge yet forgetting everything we learn during the process.

Here are 3 tips to your success when participating in a Challenge…

-Continue behaviors when the challenge ends…if specific behaviors caused great results… don’t through the baby out with the bath water.

-Continue to show up… that means continue to workout at a consistent clip per week. Stop starting and stopping.

-Use the challenge as a Launching pad-as you see improvements set new targets. This is big. As you see positive results set new targets that will continue you down the road.

    Keep moving forward

Back to Arnold… he trained 10 years to win Mr. Olympia. He was constantly training in phases throughout the year.

Times where you are focused, times where you are not as focused. Use these phases to your advantage.

If you are training for the year then there will be a time to cheat a little with food, and there will be a time to be really focused. Program design and planning for the longer term makes these short spurts of training a huge success.

  • Tiger Woods Part 2

Tiger's latest car crash could mean serious challenges for his quality of life.

Let's take a look at his current situation and past injuries... how will this play into his chances for playing golf competitively again?

    -Bryan

  • There was a good chance we were going to train Tiger Woods…
I always thought there was a good chance we were going to train Tiger Woods. This thought wasn’t delusional…

You see the company I worked for during 1999-2003 trained Jack Nicholas. Jack Nicholas won 18 majors and was considered the greatest golfer of all time.

Tiger was playing a golf round with Jack Nicholas during that time.

Jack would do a corrective exercise hip stretch we gave me to open up his hips.

Jack found such relief from the stretch that he was doing it before every drive of every whole.

Tiger looked at Jack… and said, “What are you doing?”

The young Tiger didn’t see the point of stretching before each hole and he wasn’t interested.

We never did work with Tiger.

Tiger would go on to be the second greatest golfer of all time with 15 majors and an amazing career.

Tiger’s competitive mindset, drive and will to win matched only maybe Michael Jordan.

Tiger did start dealing with injuries in 2002.

Specifically his left knee. He would scope his knee many times over, repair his torn ACL, and struggle with pain from 2002 to 2009. He also completely changed his swing.

From 2010 to 2021 his back became his Achilles heel. His back became such a problem that he would have many back surgeries, disc removal surgeries and finally a fusion.

In some alternative world I wish I could have pulled him aside in 2000 and shown him his future of injuries. His limiting factor to break Jack’s records was his health.

Maybe in this alternative world he would have doubled down on his corrective exercise and biomechanics. Maybe he would have passed on his Navy SEAL training in 2006, and 2007.

(Yes, I said that correctly… he trained with our US Navy SEALS)

In this universe Tiger would still be able to play golf now.

Now, I know this is a fantasy, but how this relates to people like you and me is our posture and biomechanics matter. When you’re young it’s normal to get away with beating up our bodies.

Time is the great equalizer and starting earlier to balance your body can make a big impact as we age. (Really a big impact at any age)

If you would like help with your biomechanics and our corrective exercises just let us know.

  • 2 Key Factors for Long-Term Health?

2 Key Factors for Long-Term Health?

I was talking to one of my good friends in the fitness community about the Super Bowl. One story line that I had forgotten about was in this young buck vs old veteran face off- I had forgotten about Patrick Mahomes (young buck age 23) workout training style.

Much has been said about Tom Brady- his diet, flexibility work, lower impact exercise training, but Patrick Mahomes seems to possess flexibility of his spine and arm that seems out of this world.

Back to you and why should you care…

Whether your 63, 43 (Tom Brady), 23 (Patrick Mohomes), one thing is important young or older…

That important factor is Range of Motion of our joints. Why this matters to you is we lose our ROM as we age if we don’t do something about it.

Now, with Patrick at 23 one could say he’s young, it’s God given. Truth be told my fitness buddy had reminded me that Patrick has been training with is trainer since 4th grade!

Not only that, he has been working on flexibility work since then. His background in sport was not focus only on football… it was basketball, baseball, and football. He was training as a kid to be a balanced athlete.

Now back to you… proper Joint Range of Motion is critical as we age because literally society is pulling our bodies out of whack.

Sitting to drive to work, sitting in front of a desk (maybe Zooming to work), craning our necks forward to text, tweet, scroll our feeds on facebook.

All these positions do one thing really well, weaken our posture, shorten our muscles, and tighten our bodies.

The solution is for us to focus on your proper posture and joint Range of Motion with our Wisdom Movement Method corrective exercises.

By getting the body back to its proper postural position and proper length of your muscles leads to a healthy body.
