“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.”
Tragically, these words found at the start of Matthew Perry’s 2022 memoir turned out to be prophetic. Less than a year later the world was stunned to learn of his passing on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54.
This week, using his very personal book “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir” as our primary basis, we discuss the life and legacy of Matthew Perry, who asked to be remembered first as a helper.
How did Matthew’s childhood fear of abandonment and his identity as a “lonely child” affect his adult relationships? What incident during a movie shoot started him on his path toward addiction? What important messages about alcoholism and drug dependency did Matthew want us to understand? And in what ways was the actor simultaneously exactly like and also the polar opposite of the beloved character he portrayed on “Friends”? These are just a few of the many points we discuss in this moving episode.
Could we BE any more honored to offer this farewell to Matthew Perry, a talented artist, advocate, and– yes– friend? Please join us.
