'Besides protection, fasting unleashes power upon your life. Those who will the call to fasting and do it in secret will fast-forward their misfit-to-kingship process. God seems to accelerate what He is doing in one's life when a person fasting' (Casto, page 190).

Casto says, on page 191, that the purpose of fasting "is for us to humble ourselves under God's hand." And Matthew 23:12 says, "For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Fasting helps us with humility. Another way of putting it is, "we decrease as God increases" or "God must become greater; we must become less. (John 3:30).

"We are living in a moment in history when we as believers have an opportunity unlike in any other generation to shine in the midst of darkness. In order to do this, we will need a remnant of people who will refuse the popular, lukewarm church culture and embrace the "do it in secret" lifestyle that brings misfits in kingship" (Casto, page 171). This chapter is about giving. It's about giving in secret or private and that can mean anything. It can mean our stories, it can mean tangible things. It runs the gamut.

In Matthew 6:21 Jesus said, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." And Matthew 6:3/4, which says,  "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

"I believe aspiring leaders must be careful to watch our attitudes, comments, and mind-sets, because we can quickly fall into the error of dishonor" (Casto, page 154). Now, those words apply to me straight up. I have not been delivered from that area and I am still a WIP (Work in Progress). Yes, I admit that honestly and that's the truth about that. I need to closely watch my attitude and my mouth sometimes, but I'm happy to report I am much better than I was. Can I get an amen on that? 

Isaiah 43:18/19 says, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" We have to perceive it; we have to believe it; we have to accept it; and we have to act on it by changing with the times.

"God is looking for those will serve with or without recognition and do it as unto the Lord. Why should we serve? Because we love Jesus!" (page 143). I wasn't sure where Casto was going with the title of this chapter, Donkeys That Lead to Destiny, but it all came together in 1 Samuel 9:3.

In chapter 8 Casto starts right out the gate by saying, "I hope to give you a solid definition of what authority is and how honoring it can benefit your life and put you on the God-track of destiny." (page 118) I think you can surmise that this chapter is about having a covering of authority over us and it's also about staying under cover or hidden, while serving under leadership until the Lord dictates otherwise, especially before we go out into the deep.

'The kingdom of God is not about material gain, but about positioning ourselves to be servants. We must begin to dismantle worldly paradigms if we want to become fruitful as kings in the kingdom.' (Mark Casto, page 92). Sometimes we get it mixed up, don't we?  Psalm 121:1/2 says, "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." That's what it's all about.

Do you know that when we make it a priority to meet with God -- to make appointments with Him -- then amazing things happen? Yes, it's true. And meeting with God means we get public rewards and public influence which can mean something different from person to person. On page 87, Casto says, he believes public reward is the power of God demonstrated through our lives. In other words, it's not how we are viewed by our family, friends, or social media -- it's how God views us. 

If we desire to help people -- if we desire a life of public influence (which has nothing to do with numbers, by the way), we have to act. James 2:17 says that faith without works is dead and if we are influencing anybody outside of ourselves, that's public influence. We're going to have to get out of ourselves and stop worrying about things we fear that don't even exist anyway. Many of the things we convince ourselves we fear are in our minds. I had to realize that in my own life. I was scared for absolutely no reason. What a waste of time.

"Prayer is the door that allows God to get involved more precisely in the affairs of our lives." That quote comes from Mark Casto, author of the book, When Misfits Become Kings. It's part 6 of our on-going book study, chapter 5 titled, Secret Prayers, Public Shadows. Do you have a prayer life where you speak to God and He speaks to you? If so, awesome, God's shadow and power follows you. If not, well I'm here to tell you that you can have a secret (or intimate) prayer life. Secret prayers involve speaking to God and reading His Word. John 15:7 says, "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you."

"Do you want God's hand only, or would you like to experience His face?" That quote comes from Mark Casto (page 42) in his book, When Misfits Become Kings. And in our on-going book study part 5, chapter 4 titled, "Public Signs that Lead to Secret Encounters", the chapter is about the misfits God uses who have a relationship with Him and who don't simply watch Him in action in other people's lives. No, they are the people who hear from God themselves. just as Moses saw the public sign of the burning bush in Exodus 3, we too, have signs from God we can be in tune with when we have a personal relationship with Him.

"Before Christ, we were misfits, strangers, having no hope and without God in this world" (Casto, page 35). In book study part 4 of Mark Casto's book, When Misfits Become Kings, we discuss chapter 3 titled, Password: Passover Lamb. 

It's about having access to God and not stopping until we get it. It really doesn't take all that much though. God is not some elusive, obscure, remote, distant God we can't access. He's just the opposite. He's waiting and willing to accept us as we are. Yes, He's approachable, close, near, friendly, and loving. Who wouldn't want that? Comon now.
