August 27, 2021The Horse Show: S6E10 - Women Making Olympic Equestrian HistoryIrish journalist Louise Parkes joins Chris this week to share her experience and reflections on the Tokyo Olympic Games. Louise was the pen behind the press releases for the FEI in Tokyo and watched history being made at these unusual Games. The world too enjoyed watching as German women not only won dressage and eventing gold medals but also occupied seven places in the top ten of the dressage freestyle, including the top five spots. Eventer Julia Krajewski slid into the gold medal position after cross country when her teammate and favorite Michael Jung accrued penalties and she made no mistake that this was to be her competition. That these Games happened at all during a pandemic was a massive achievement for all concerned and much credit is due to the Japanese people who ensured that the horses benefitted from five-star accommodation and the viewing public enjoyed some outstanding performances that will go down in the record books with women becoming Olympic Champions.Host: Chris StaffordFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. August 24, 2021Tri This: S1E32 - Coping with Stress and AnxietyThis week, Kirstin addresses an issue that she has been seeing on the rise in her practice and with athletes around her. Stress, anxiety, and anxious symptoms, have been increasing, especially over the last month. Collectively there have been more cases of mental and emotional health concerns over the past 18 months. We went from seeing anxiety in 1 in 10 people to 4 in 10. But what role can sport play? Does it seem to help? And what about the athletes that are throwing up some inspiring performances? How have they been able to do that? In this episode, Kirstin looks at how sport can play a role in lowering anxiety. We also touch on ways to acknowledge what we are going through so that we can make a choice to either stay where we are or move forward. But first, we must be aware. Kirstin reflects on how Triathlon and training has helped her stay focused. She made a goal early on to be stronger on the other side. Listen to her insight, and also catch a few helpful tips to avoid being overwhelmed and incorporating sport as a tool to help.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. August 17, 2021Tri This: S1E31 - The Role of HormonesKirstin discusses the role hormones play in keeping us healthy and performing at our best. Hormones play a role in energy production and storage. They can help us both build and break down muscle tissue. They can even have protective effects against injuries like concussion, while also being a potential cause of others, like Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears. Hormones help our body do everything it needs to do. Yet, so many people deal with hormone imbalances with no idea what can actually cause them. In this episode we cover an overview of what hormones are and then we dive deep into the many, and main, causes behind hormone imbalances. Kirstin even surprises us with some of the causes you may not have thought of as contributors to your hormones!
