  • 27. Kate Forsyth: Fairytales, Feminism and the Forgotten Women in History.
Kate Forsyth chats about fairytales, feminism and providing a voice for the forgotten women in history. Discussing the incredible Charlotte de la Force in Bitter Greens and her determination to live life the way she intended, we follow her incredible journey, you will fall in love with her and not just because she dressed up as a bear to rescue her younger lover, although this is reason enough.
How wonderful was it to learn about the origins of Happily Ever After, this type of ending of a fairytale was, believe it or not, had quite a feminist angle. In this time period, marriage was to simply improve the position of others in society, never for love. Therefore, if a woman managed to marry the man she desired, and a man of her choice then she really did live happily ever after, unlike so many before her.
In Beauty in Thorns, one of Kate's latest novels, we chat about Lizzie Siddal, the model in the infamous Ophelia painting as well as the women in the pre-Raphaelite era trying to be heard. We read about their lovers, their struggles, opium addiction, eating disorders and the importance of art to change the world.
Kate Forsyth has sold more than a million books, which ones have you read?

  • 26. Rusty Young: Marching Powder, Colombiano & providing a voice for the voiceless.

His documentary Wildlands has him interviewing George Jung, depicted by Johnny Depp in Blow; and Popeye, Escobar's assassin, a man responsible for countless murders during Escobar's reign. Rusty takes us through the interviews and provides an insight into what really happened behind the scenes.
Colombiano is a haunting and disturbing depiction of the life of a child soldier in a war where no one wins. An absolute must read. It's book you need to talk about afterwards, so drop us a line on Twitter (WordnNerds), FB or Insta once you've read it!
