LGBT rights in Africa is a mixed bag. While a few progressive countries have anti-discrimination protections or even same-sex marriage, there are also countries that still maintain the death penalty or lengthy imprisonment for homosexual acts. And while the international community is keen to influence this, lasting change must come from within.
U.H.A.I. is Africa’s first activist-led and managed fund for and by sex workers and sexual and gender minorities. It works to change the narrative of Africa’s human rights from one of ‘foreign assistance’ to ownership and self-determination. From U.H.A.I., we speak tonight with Star Rugori.

While Russia’s influence in Ukraine appears to be under pressure, it’s influence on LGBT rights across Eastern Europe does not appear to be slowing. Their anti-gay propaganda bill has already been replicated in Hungary and now Romania has become the latest battleground. Under the guise of protecting children, the bill aims to silence the rainbow community.
Aside from impacts on censorship, health and discrimination, the bill will also stop many support services for the LGBT community. One organisation that will be impacted is MozaiQ Romania and we are joined by Andrei Luca, their Director of Development tonight.

Among the 5.1 million migrant workers who are employed in South East Asia, little is still known about the motivations or experiences of migrant workers with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. Even less information is available on the discrimination, violence and harassment that they may experience in the world of work.
It inspired the International Labour Organization, in partnership with UN Women, to commission a study, titled: A Very Beautiful But Heavy Jacket: The Experiences of Migrant Workers With Diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression in South-East Asia. Emily Dwyer, Director at Edge Effect, was the lead author of the report and joins us tonight.

Coming out to family is an experience that binds members of the LGBT community. It’s scary. It’s unknown. And it’s full of questions…and acronyms! But for most parents there are just as many questions and many more unknowns. Through his own experience of coming out, one Irishman has created a guide to help.
The guide has been designed to give parents and guardians – whether they have LGBTQ+ children or not – information on terminology and how they can support LGBTQ+ young people. And tonight we speak with the creator of the guide – Domhnaill Harkin from Irish LGBTQ+ charity, ShoutOut.

The largest HIV and AIDS Conference in the world was held in the past few weeks in Montreal, Canada. While Covid-19 has dominated the media and our mindsets, there were 1.5 million new HIV infections each year. The conference brings together the brightest scientists, researchers and doctors to continue to fight this global epidemic.
And just as HIV fights for some coverage against Covid-19, another attack on our community emerges in the form of monkeypox or MPX. To discuss the highlights from the AIDS 2022 conference and the arrival of MPX in Australia, we are joined tonight by Heath Paynter, Deputy CEO of AFAO – the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations.
