In the early hours of the morning before Norway’s Pride celebrations in Oslo, a lone gunman took to the streets of the capital and shot at random. The attack occurred in central Oslo’s packed nightlife district, including iconic gay bar The London Pub. The attack lasted only minutes but left two members of the LGBTIQ community dead and more than 20 other people injured.

Pride events were cancelled nationally at the request of police while they investigated if other attacks could follow. Fortunately they did not. However this did not prevent thousands of Norwegians taking to the streets in a march of solidarity. In the middle of the confusion were the organisers of Oslo Pride.

It’s about time! On Sunday night, Singapore’s Prime Minister made an announcement that the government will repeal the colonial era law that bans consensual sex between men – the gross indecency laws. The news was celebrated locally and applauded internationally. But there’s a catch that has some in the LGBT community concerned and angry.

It has been a hard fought victory with years of court challenges, political advocacy and Pink Dot protests. We reached out to a great friend of the show to see how this announcement was received and what it all means going forward. We are joined by Yangfa Leow the Executive Director of Oogachaga LGBT Counselling Service in Singapore.

Like it or not, the media has incredible power. The power to amplify an issue or to silence one. The power to rally people behind a cause or fight against one. With that power comes great responsibility – the obligation to be fearless, factual and fair. But when it comes to LGBTIQ issues, that is not always the reality.

One country that is tackling head-on the way LGBTIQ people are seen in the media is Fiji. They have recently run a training and engagement workshop with journalists organised by the Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network. Their CEO, Isikeli Vulavou, joined us to explain how it went.

A very big court ruling happened in last week but you may have missed it. The High Court in the former British colony of Antigua and Barbuda struck down the colonial-era sodomy laws – including up to 15 year prison sentence that came with convictions. What makes this case even more interesting was the role the government played in the final decision.

Not only will we learn more about the country and what life is like for LGBT people, we will also uncover how significant this court ruling is – not just for Antigua and Barbuda, but also for the rest of the Caribbean. Whilst LGBT pride happens 365 days a year, there is a big focus in June in northern hemisphere countries. Pride began as a movement with a protest – the famed Stonewall riots in New York City – in response to police intimidation of the community. Back then, Pride had a very clear purpose. It was a protest. But amidst all the parties and parades of today, has Pride lost its purpose?
