Wrestling Art with Chris Things

Episode 49 is here pals! It's our Chris Things Art "Match of the Week" Edition w/ Best Mate David, back chatting the final two official 'Matches of the Week' - rounding out the first full year of the Chris Things M.O.T.W. illustration series! And two very fine matches at that!

Yes, I'm finally back from my holiday podcast break & stoked to be back at it with my long-time pal, chatting about the big 2024 CMLL Anniversary show 4-way mask-battle apuestas match, along with one of my all-time favourite matches in 'Gladiator' Mike Awesome vs Masato Tanaka from the big 1997 FMW Kawasaki Stadium show. David & I talk about these matches, the art & all sorts of nonsense. A fun time had by all!

In my 'World of Chris-Things' intro monologue I chat being back from my recent overseas trip, trying to keep up with the art while there & the hectic array of things that I've had on since my return. Including my brand new, fancy, self-published M.O.T.W. YEAR ONE art book!

Enjoy!!

Episode 48; is here pals! Yes, our "Wrestling Art Curator" special is BACK already! That being our special-edition interview series focusing on the art practices of rad wrestling-artists! I'm bloody tickled to be chatting to an incredible Mexican Lucha Libre artist, Erik Jam!

I originally got to meet Erik through getting to be part of his & Luis Hernández' amazing Desde la Tercera Cuerda Lucha Libre group art exhibition at El Rule Comunidad in Mexico City. I've long been a fan of Erik's work so I was way pumped to finally get to talk to him all about it! Bright, bold, super-fun, maximalist & just totally jam-packed in the best of ways! We chat about how he originally chose to focus his art practice on Lucha Libre, the evolution of his style, influences, the magic of Lucha Libre, favourite masks & everything in between! As a lucha-loving Australian gringo, I had so much fun on this one!! Thank you Erik!!

In my intro monologue, I chat about last night's Wrestling Club at The Scratch & officially make a special "Chris Things Match of the Week" announcement!

Enjoy!!

Be sure to be following Erik on his AMAZING Instagram page for some incredible wrestling-art!

Episode 47 is here pals! It's our Chris Things Art "Match of the Week" Edition w/ the esteemed Unkle of Beeks back for an extra special 'DOUBLE-HEADER' episode talking the 'Takayamania Empire' combo that was Minoru Suzuki vs Katsuyori Shibata & the totally heartwarming 'No-Time-Limit Emergency Match'  that was Suzuki vs Takayama. Two very unique matches that kind of transcend wrestling in a very special way. We talk all about these matches, Takayamania Empire III & some fond memories of the amazing man himself, Yoshihiro Takayama. We also talk a myriad of nonsense sidebars, from the VERY SPECIAL DAY that is Blue Panther's birthday, to diabetes testing, to the new Beetlejuice movie, to Dave Meltzer-isms, wrestling travels of days gone by & much more!

In my 'World of Chris-Things' intro monologue I chat about the return of Wrestling Club at my local favourite bar, The Scratch, my latest commission art odds & ends & my upcoming little overseas trip.

Enjoy!!

Episode 46; is here pals! The latest in our "Wrestling Art Curator" special-edition interview series focusing on the art practices of rad wrestling-artists! I'm so darned excited to have out first ever RETURNING artist-guest back on the show in the form of Jonathan McBurnie!

Jonathan is an amazing Australian artist, writer, cartoonist, curator & the Director of the Rockhampton Museum of Art. He's most recently just wrapped up his latest solo show; A Truth, Fugitive And Imponderable in my home-town of Brisbane, Australia & we got to have a delightful in-person chat! We talk all about the show, some of the things that go into putting on a solo art exhibition, making art, wrestling-art, The Destroyer & all of the things! I honestly had such a blast having this chat!! Hope you enjoy it too.

In my intro monologue, I chat about overcoming a recent bit of disappointing news & choosing to pivot my creative energies into the good things, rather than letting myself wallow in the not-so-good.

Enjoy!!

Jump on Jonathan's website for a whole bunch of awesome wrestling-art!

Episode 45 is here pals! It's our Chris Things Art "Match of the Week" Edition w/ Best-Mate-David for another big ol' 'DOUBLE-HEADER' episode talking the two absolutely delightful matches that were the 'American Dragon', Bryan Danielson vs. 'Swerve' Strickland (for the AEW World Championship at Wembley Stadium) & an FMW ‘No Ropes Barbed Wire Current Mine Explosion Double Hell Time Bomb Tornado Death-Match’ with Terry Funk & Mr. Pogo vs Hayabusa & Masato Tanaka at the famed Kawasaki Stadium. Two admittedly slightly different matches, but I think they have their strange similarities too! David & I have a blast talking all about the matches, the art & a lot of nonsense.

In my opening monologue, I talk a bit about the myriad of things that I have coming up on the calendar for the latter part of 2024, some exciting new projects fighting away at feelings of guilt & in general where I am in my 'art-life' right now.

Enjoy!!

Episode 44 is here pals! It's another 'special' little solo, mini edition of the show where I just talk to YOU. There were some bumps in the road of lining up this weeks' guest, so I figured why not let's you & I just have a bit of a one-sided chat? It was actually good timing in hindsight as I had some fun things take place this past week that I feel were very worthy of discussion. The highs & lows & general rollercoaster ride of trying to be a full-time illustrator/artist folks! I also chat about some exciting upcoming events through the latter part of 2024. Including a way-rad self portrait exhibition that I'll be taking part in & a fantastic-looking upcoming Brisbane solo show by friend-of-the-show & past Wrestling Art Curator guest, the crazy-talented Jonathan McBurnie!

Consider this a fun little interlude monologue chat before we're back next week for more M.O.T.W. chats & then some 'Wrestling Art Curator' goodness!

Enjoy!!

Episode 43 is here pals! It's an extra-special combo of "Wrestling Club pt. II" AND our Chris Things Art "Match of the Week" w/ my dear pal, Bradley, talking the bloody GREAT G1 Climax match that was Zack Sabre Jr. vs Gabe Kidd! I thought this actually all came together to be maybe the best episode of this podcast yet. I think I captured the 'Wrestling Club' fun, live experience a bit better this time round. A way fun little chat is had with the always thoughtful Bradley (who actually also did his own special version of the MOTW art which I've JUST shared in my insta story). In my intro monologue, I talk my latest happenings & get a little deep about the bumps in the road that we experience with this art stuff & how to overcome & keep chugging along.

Enjoy!!

Episode 42 is here pals! It's our Chris Things Art "Match of the Week" w/ 'The Young Boy', Keepin' It StrongStyle's very own Josh Smith to talk some G1 Climax 2024 goodness & the bloody great match that was the main event of night 4; Takeshita vs Uemura! We talk about the match, the art & all things G1 from this years' excellent, extra 'fresh' tournament so far!

In my opening monologue, I talk a bit more about the exciting upcoming Way of the Blade (AEW edition) book release, my weird love for bloody wrestling, what I've got going on in the world of Chris-Things & some general rambling nonsense.

Enjoy!!

Episode 41 is here pals! It's our Chris Things Art "Match of the Week" Edition w/ Best-Mate-David for a 'DOUBLE-HEADER' episode talking the two absolutely wonderful matches that were Jushin 'Thunder' Liger vs Black Tiger (Mark 'Rollerball' Rocco) & the famed Terry Funk vs Jerry 'The King' Lawler 'Empty Arena Match' in Memphis. These were just such a blast to ramble about. We talk the matches, the art, our wrestling-hangs of days gone by, the launch of 'Wrestling-Club', our much-loved Brewski bar that is sadly closing down & much hearty appreciation of Lance Russell & the Funker. Such a fun time!

In my opening monologue, I talk a bit about the upcoming 'Way of the Blade' part II: The AEW Edition! As we inch closer to the big book release, I give a little insight to the process & timelines of book illustration & this way-fun project!

Enjoy!!

Episode 40 is here pals! It's a very special edition of the show; commemorating my big, recent 'WRESTLING-CLUB w/ Chris Things' debut event at Brewski last night! So I thought I'd bring you, my loyal listeners in to the 'club' as it were. I've tried my best to make this work in audio form. In today's episode, after catching y'all up on my recent comings & goings, we travel to my opening speech of the event, followed by some fun audio grabs from some of what was played on the evening. For future events, I'll endeavour to capture a bit more of that live audio magic of the evening. But as the first go-around I was just very chuffed all-round! Hope you enjoy this special edition of the show & I'll be back with some more 'M.O.T.W.' goodness next week.

Enjoy!!
