Electric Vehicle Regret: New Survey Says Nearly Half Want Gas Guzzlers Back

In a recent survey conducted by McKinsey, it has been uncovered that the United States is facing a significant hurdle in the electrification of its vehicle fleets. The survey encompassed over 30,000 respondents across 15 countries, with 46% of electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the US expressing a desire to switch back to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.

The primary reasons cited for this shift back to gas-powered vehicles include the challenges associated with public charging infrastructure, high total costs of ownership, and limitations on driving patterns for long-distance journeys. Australia, a country known for its extensive travel distances, topped the dissatisfaction charts, with 49% of EV owners considering a return to gas-powered vehicles.

California Supreme Court Removes Initiative From Ballot That Could Have Limited Tax Hikes

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom successfully petitioned to remove a proposition from the state’s 2024 ballot that would have required all new taxes to be approved by voters, the Associated Press reported.

Newsom and Democratic state lawmakers urged the California Supreme Court in September to remove the ballot measure, which would have required any new tax levied by the legislature to be approved by a popular vote and any local tax increase to be approved by two-thirds of voters, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the initiative must be removed from the ballot because it would revise, rather than amend, the state’s constitution, according to the AP.

“Today’s ruling is the greatest threat to democracy California has faced in recent memory,” the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act campaign said in a press release reacting to the ruling. “The governor has cynically terminated Californians’ rights to engage in direct democracy despite his many claims that he is a defender of individual rights and democracy.”

Titan Solar told employees on June 13 that it was “closing its doors” because no one would buy the company, according to Time.

Titan said that it put solar panels on more than 100,000 homes. The fate of consumers who have panels on their homes and no one to maintain them is uncertain.

Bidenomics: More companies announce bankruptcies, shutter operations, citing inflation

Retailers are closing nearly 3,200 stores this year, according to a recent analysis from CoreSight Research. The closures are a 24% increase from 2023.

U.S. drug stores and pharmacy closures led to 8 million square feet of shuttered retail space this year, the research company said. It also notes that retailers are losing inventory and customers due to retail theft. “Retail shrink” is closely connected to “organized retail crime,” it notes.

Out of the 3,200 being closed, the majority are being closed by roughly 30 retailers, with Family Dollar closing the most of over 600, according to the data, CBS News reported.

Tupperware is the latest to announce it's permanently closing its last operating production plant in the U.S. in Hemingway, South Carolina. All of its 148 workers will be laid off, the first in September, followed by others in waves through next January. Tupperware announced its plans last week, stating it would continue to produce its products in a plant in Lerma, Mexico.

Others closing stores this year include CVS Health, 7-Eleven, Rite Aid, Express, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Macy’s, The Body Shop, Soft Surroundings, Burlington stores, Foot Locker, Carter’s Big Lots, Dollar General, Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Big Lots, Best Buy and others, according to the CoreSight analysis.

EV Start-Up Files For Bankruptcy One Year After Rolling Out Its First Model

Fisker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday after trying and failing to secure more investment to stay afloat, the company announced. The company once attracted robust interest and hype, marketing itself as the Apple of vehicles, but it struggled to run as a public company and was stuck with thousands of EVs that it did not sell, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Fisker raised about $1 billion from various investors, but it ran through most of its cash before defaulting on a debt payment to one of its leading investors, according to the WSJ. The company saw key executives head for the exits as it struggled to roll out its first model, the Ocean SUV, which was plagued by complaints about quality, including problems with the brakes.

Pizza Hut Closes 15 Locations Amid Major Franchisee Dispute — 129 More at Risk of Closing

A significant number of Pizza Hut restaurants face closure due to an ongoing financial dispute with one of its major franchisees.

As reported by Daily Mail, a total of 150 restaurants are set to close, with an additional 129 across Illinois, Georgia, South Carolina, and Wisconsin on the brink of shutting down as part of the dispute.

The closure wave began unexpectedly in Northwest Indiana, where several Pizza Hut outlets ceased operations. Signs on the doors read “location closed” or “We apologize for any inconvenience. We are temporarily closed,” NWI.com first reported.

The root of the issue lies in the contractual disagreements and financial strain between Pizza Hut and Texas-based EYM Group, which operates multiple restaurant brands nationwide.

According to court records, the franchisee defaulted on its payments to Pizza Hut, failing to pay 3 million owed in late 2022 and 2.6 million owed in 2023. EYM Group has been seeking to sell its Pizza Hut restaurants, citing inflation, labor costs, a lack of innovation, and other factors as contributing to its financial struggles.

US retail sales come in below expectations in May

US retail sales came in below expectations for a second straight month in May as gas station revenues fell sharply, the government said Tuesday, while the data for April was revised lower.

World Economic Forum Article Calls For ‘Reinventing’ The Global Food System, Praises ‘Animal-Free’ Products

The World Economic Forum (WEF) published an article on Thursday calling for a “reinvention” of the global food supply and praising “alternative proteins” made by “animal-free” products.

The WEF is an international advocacy organization founded by Klaus Schwab that seeks to bring world leaders together “to shape global, regional and industry agendas.” The organization has been criticized in the past for publishing an article encouraging people to eat bugs to “reduce climate change.”

In Thursday’s article, titled “Feeding the future: why Renovation and Reinvention are key to saving our food system,” WEF New Frontiers of Nutrition Project Fellow Juliana Weltman Glezer laments the greenhouse gas emissions caused by food production and warns of a 60% increase in food demand when the worldwide population hits 10 billion.

“Many of the ways we grow, manufacture and consume food are causing a dual crisis of human and environmental health, and the complexity will only intensify,” Glezer wrote.

While experts extol the health and environmental benefits of a diet free of animal products, new research suggests that consuming ultra-processed vegan food can increase the risk of heart death.

Ultra-processed foods include packaged goods, drinks, cereals and ready-to-eat products that contain colors, emulsifiers, flavors and other additives. UPFs are typically high in sugar, saturated fat, and salt and devoid of vitamins and fiber.

Researchers found that for every 10% increase in plant-based foods, the risk of death from heart disease fell by 20%.

Yet, when the increase in plant-based foods came from UPFs, it was linked to a 12% rise in heart disease-related deaths.

Lead study author Fernanda Rauber explained that the composition and processing methods of UPFs can lead to higher blood pressure and cholesterol.

“Food additives and industrial contaminants present in these foods might cause oxidative stress and inflammation, further aggravating the risks,” she said.

“Those shifting towards plant-based foods should also think about the degree of processing involved before making their choices.”

Dr. Eszter Vamos, co-author of the study, noted the deceptive marketing and public perception of plant-based products as healthy.

“While ultra-processed foods are often marketed as healthy foods, this large study suggests that plant-based ultra-processed foods do not seem to have protective health effects and are linked to poor health outcomes,” she said.3

Counterfeit Titanium Found In Some Boeing And Airbus Jets

Boeing is no longer the pride of American aviation. The plane manufacturer is riddled with so many problems it's impossible to keep track. Yesterday, the FAA announced an investigation (yet another...) into a 737 Max 8 jet that encountered a dangerous mid-flight 'Dutch roll' several weeks ago. Now, a report from the New York Times reveals that some Boeing jets are built with 'counterfeit titanium.'

Some recently manufactured Boeing and Airbus jets have components made from titanium that was sold using fake documentation verifying the material's authenticity, according to a supplier for the plane makers, raising concerns about the structural integrity of those airliners.

The falsified documents are being investigated by Spirit AeroSystems, which supplies fuselages for Boeing and wings for Airbus, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration. The investigation comes after a parts supplier found small holes in the material from corrosion. -NYT

Counterproductive’: Biden Energy Dep’t Hit With Lawsuit After Cracking Down On Appliances Used By Millions

A pro-free market organization is taking the Biden administration to court in an effort to block government rules targeting a bevy of appliances used by millions of Americans.

 The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) filed a lawsuit against the Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday seeking injunctive and declaratory relief against the DOE’s water efficiency standards for clothes washers and dishwashers. In its complaint, CEI alleges that the agency exceeded its authority by issuing the efficiency rules, which CEI describes as “counterproductive” and bad for consumers.

“DOE has gone beyond its statutory authority in increasing the stringency of water efficiency rules of certain consumer appliances without lawful authority,” CEI’s complaint states. “More precisely, DOE lacks the authority to increase the stringency of such rules for appliances other than showerheads, faucets, water closets, and urinals. This lawsuit seeks to confine the actions of the DOE to the exercise of its lawful statutory authority.

The Fed’s interest rate mistake is a gift for Trump

 Wednesday’s decision to maintain current rates, though, was a mistake: The Fed should be cutting rates already. And every month it refuses to do so is a gift to Donald Trump.

The Fed says it’s maintaining current interest rates to fight inflation. It might seem that that’s good for Biden. But that isn’t the case.

In the push and pull between fighting inflation and avoiding recession, other central bankers are beginning to lean toward the latter.

To be clear, the Fed’s theory has nothing to do with politics. (Trump has already promised he won’t reappoint Powell as chair.)
