Gen Z teens largely put the brakes on driving, signaling ‘seismic’ shift in US car culture: study

Zoomers are seemingly rewriting the teenage rite of passage script, opting for tech over tires as they steer a cultural shift away from the traditional rush to the open road.

New research from MarketWatch Guides found that the youngest group of drivers – ages 19 and under – make up only one in 25, or approximately 3.6%, of licensed drivers in the U.S. Taking all drivers under age 25 into account brings the combined percentage to 11% of the driving force.

Drivers aged 30-34, meanwhile, are most likely to be behind the wheel, their overall percentage coming to 9% across that 4-year age span alone.

The study provided to Fox News Digital sourced the percentage of licensed drivers according to different age categories as of 2022, pulling data from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Association’s data on highway statistics.

Is the ever-increasing access to rideshare apps and public transit at our fingertips, the reluctance to take on additionally cumbersome expenses on top of student loan debt, or perhaps even Gen Z’s tendency to push back against tradition to blame for the shift?

A massive fire broke out at Farina Farms Inc. in Marion County, Illinois, on Wednesday night, resulting in the deaths of millions of chickens.

The farm is one of the largest free-range egg facilities in the country.

The fire, which began around 6:30 p.m. along Highway 37, quickly escalated into a 5-alarm fire, requiring the intervention of at least 20 different fire departments from surrounding areas, according to WAND TV.

New study: Infrastructure needed to support a ‘zero emissions’ electric trucking fleet comes with a $1 trillion price tag “

Here’s the context, from March of this year:

On March 29, 2024, Good Friday, Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rolled out its new electric truck mandate, which will require that electric semi-trucks make up an increasing share of manufacturer sales from 2027 through 2032, similar to its recent rule for passenger cars.

There’s a new report out though, from Roland Berger and published by the Clean Freight Coalition, which stresses the unaffordability and impracticality of the rules and regulations, as they stand:

California mulls per-mile Road Charge to replace gas taxes

Fuel-efficient and zero-emission vehicles are cutting into revenues, so the state is trialling a pilot program—should Canada be looking at the same?

California is considering countering falling gas-tax revenues with a “road charge” pilot program

The program, if implemented, would charge car owners per mile driven, and not factor in the type of fuel used

The state hasn’t set a rate yet, but is looking at around US$0.02 to $0.04 cents per mile (CDN$0.017 and CDN$0.034 per km)

Now California is proposing what it’s calling a Road Charge, where drivers would be exempt from state fuel taxes and, instead, would pay a fee based on how many miles they drive. The state is asking residents if they’re willing to sign up for a pilot project to assess the viability of such a program.

Biden’s window for shaking off inflation woes might already be closed

Time is running out for President Joe Biden to change the public perception of his economic stewardship, with numerous allies worrying that inflation, regardless of the relative health of the economy, will hamper the president through the general election.

For months, if not years, voters have given the president poor marks for his handling of the economy. Just 38% of participants in a May poll from Gallup said they had a “great deal” or fair amount of confidence in Biden’s economic policies, with 46% saying the same of former President Donald Trump, Biden’s 2024 Republican opponent.

Meanwhile, a poll conducted by Harris Research found nearly 3-in-5 people believing the country is in a recession despite slow but sure economic growth over the past three-plus years.

 Democratic strategists familiar with Biden’s campaign strategy told the Washington Examiner that, with just over five months until November, voters’ economic perceptions of both the president and Trump are unlikely to change.

New study: Copper mines can’t extract enough material needed for EVs

A team of University of Michigan researchers recently discovered that the amount of copper needed to keep up with the manufactured demand created by the globalist E.V. agenda is “essentially impossible” to generate. On May 16th, Engineering and Technology published an article by Tanya Weaver which covered the results of the new study:

Copper cannot be mined quickly enough to keep up with current policies requiring the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), according to a University of Michigan study.

The study found that renewable energy’s copper needs would outstrip what copper mines can produce at the current rate. Between 2018 and 2050, the world will need to mine 115% more copper than has been mined in all of human history up until 2018 just to meet current copper needs without considering the green energy transition.

To meet the copper needs of electrifying the global vehicle fleet, as many as six new large copper mines must be brought online annually over the next several decades. About 40% of the production from new mines will be required for EV-related grid upgrades.

So what exactly do these numbers look like, in context? Well here’s this, also from Weaver:

[A]n EV requires three to five times more copper than petrol or diesel cars, not to mention the copper required for upgrades to the electricity grid.

‘A normal Honda Accord needs about 40 pounds of copper. The same battery electric Honda Accord needs almost 200 pounds of copper,’ said Adam Simon, professor of earth and environmental studies at the University of Michigan.

 All 18-year-olds in Britain will have to perform a year of mandatory military or civilian national service if the governing Conservative Party wins the July 4 national election, the party said Sunday.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged to bring back a form of national service for the first time in more than 60 years, seeking to energize his election campaign after a faltering start.

The U.K. introduced military conscription for men and some women during World War II, and imposed 18 months of mandatory military service for men between 1947 and 1960. Since then Britain has had an all-volunteer military whose size has steadily shrunk.

Poll: Majority Not Taking Summer Vacation, 73% Cite Lack of Cash in Joe Biden’s America

Many Americans do not plan to enjoy a summer vacation in President Joe Biden’s America, a Fox News poll found in May, underscoring the economy as the number one 2024 issue for voters.

The Fox News poll found:

Of the 55 percent who are not taking a summer vacation, 73 percent do not have enough money to do so.

Seventy-two percent said higher prices impact their summer plans.

Fifteen percent do not have time and must remain focused on the daily grind.

The last time a pollster asked Americans this question, in 2010, of those who were not going on vacation, only 51 percent cited a lack of cash, while 20 percent blamed a lack of time, Fox News reported.

Recession will strike this year with 21 states flashing red already, top economist says

Nancy Lazar, Piper Sandler's chief global economist, told Business Insider that unemployment has risen significantly in 21 states.

Specifically, three-month average unemployment has increased by at least 0.5 percentage points from its low over the last 12 months in all 21 states. The group, which includes California and Illinois and numbered 19 states a few weeks ago, generates more than 40% of US GDP.

Lazar said that when joblessness has spiked across that many states in the past, a protracted downturn has followed almost every time. The state-level indicator is based on the "Sahm Rule."

Luxury Electric Vehicle Maker Becomes Latest In Industry To Announce Huge Layoffs

Electric vehicle (EV) maker Lucid Motors announced that the company would be laying off staff in a bid to lower expenses amid a slowdown in the market.

The layoffs will affect 6% of its workforce, equating to around 400 employees, and will trim from all employee levels, including leadership and mid-level management, according to a filing submitted Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Lucid is one of several EV makers to announce layoffs in recent months as consumers decline to adopt the product at the rate expected.  

The company estimates that it will have to pay out between $21 million and $25 million in severance pay and benefits in connection with the layoffs, according to the filing. The planned terminations are expected to be done by the end of the third quarter.

However, as is the way with Bidenomics, March's +2.6% MoM surge in orders was revised down to a +0.8% MoM rise. This is the third month in a row of MoM gains for durable goods new orders and lifts the nominal YoY move to +1.3%...

On February 25, 2022, the day following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the national average for a gallon of gas had already reached $3.57—indicating that gas prices were already sky-high and rising under the Biden Administration despite protestations from President Biden that Russia was solely responsible for domestic fuel inflation.
