R: Thank you. Maybe I can ask you about your thesis? What its about and things (like that)?

M: Yes sure. Its about food education in kinder garden. It's a study about how the meal the lunch meal in kinder garden influence the food education in children. And its been a long process to figuring out all the things that are involving when people eat together but there is actually a lot of evidence that shows that if you get kids interested in food when they are very very young, they get healthier habits through out life. That's very positive and interesting for me.

R: How do you think Copenhagen commune, municipality working for it?

M: Yes I think I mean of course Copenhagen as the capital is going firstahead and showing and setting a good standard. There is (are) a lot of other communities in Denmark with smaller cities that are not so well developed on(in) that area yet, but I think that there will be in the next years to come there will be more and more focus on how to work with food, how to work with kids, how to get them involved and interested in making food. So they can get healthier habits.

R: I have also been in a kinder garden to observe how they eat, what they eat before, for like some years ago. And they got like organic food which was very very good but the menu was pretty poor and color was also… so we discussed pretty much about it was pretty behind. But maybe since then it went already three years or something so it happened already some changes.

M: Yes I mean I think first of all that Denmark is no1 country regarding organic food so that's really great for us and set a good standard for rest of the world.

M: Yes, Hello! Welcome to the show, thank you for listening. My name is Milena, and I am 27 years old and from Copenhagen, Denmark. I am currently a student – I study nutrition and health. And I´m at the moment writing a thesis regarding food education in kindergarden. And Im almost done with that. So that's really great.

R: Congrats!

M: Thank you.

R: So maybe afterwards you can talk a little more about your project.

M: Yes, that will be very nice.

R: Thank you.

 

R: Before you talk about your project, maybe you can also talk about your background. You are not exactly come from Denmark.

M: No. That's true. Ive been living in Denmark in my whole life. I came with my parents in ´88, when I was 7 months old, so and Im originally from Serbia. My parents they came here because, not because of the war or anything, they saw a great opportunity for making a better life here and they came here to work and live and Ive been here ever since. But I also speak serbian.

R: You do?

M: Ya, I do, ya.

R: Whats your mother tongue then?

M: Oh that's Danish. Definitely Danish.

R: Then you speak Danish, Sebian…

M: and English and a little bit of French but I cannot brag with that.

R: I just thought about: you have been in japan and lived there like a half year? one year? a half year right?

M: In 2013?

So I was sent to the japanese office by the headquarter which is based in Denmark. So I was sent there for some projects, 8 months. I wish it could be longer.

R: Did you like it? How did you find it?

M: Yeah its nice cuz I lived there. In tokyo when I was little so now im back as an adult right, so you have to operate in a way the local stew so there are a lot of rules and manners i need learn, but I was very excited when i was back. it is a mixed feeling of familiarity and also something new and exiting. but i really enjoyed it. I wish I could go back some time and also there are so many sweet people, like you.

R: Did you speak in japanese all the time in japan, also at work?

M: Ya ya ya thats actually funny because I worked on price negotiation and in japanese called yakan の交渉 so im (was) actually working with 厚労省 how to say that in english I dont even know, the proper english translation for 厚労省 so talk with some at governmental officials but fortunately I usually give them my business cards and like say very clearly that im from Denmark

R: yeah exactly because they can't see immediately that you are not from japan then you have to stress that you are not from Japan.

M: You cannot really expose your true identity after just one or two sentences right, but as you talk more they can definitely feel that you are not a native speaker of the language, and there might be situation where you sounded a little bit impolite not by choice, but just because of language barrier. So I always make very clear that Im foreginer so please pardon me for any linguistic mistakes that I make. but thats definitely not my true intension. They were very nice and tolerant and I think they were really appreciate efforts that i made in order to make things understood in your own language.

R: So you also gained som confidence, didn't you.

M: Yes yes and it was actually also fun. It is a language that I really love and like to use all the possibilities to practice right. Im not sure if it is right person to practice especially when its govermental official, but

R: But how many times you have to talk to them, you know. Mainly you have to talk to your friends and co-worker here.

M: exactly. but im trying to say that maybe friends are better partner to practice in stead of practicing with governmental officials.

R: At least to begin with.

M: Ya so it was nice experience in Japan so im looking forward to go back.

R: Ya, probably in cherry blossom season.

M: Yes

R: Thank you!

M: Yeah, I think language is really like... it is part of identity of this person, thats how I think.

R: Definitely, Its also very cultural, isn't it?

M: Ya, definitely, so its funny that you mention it because.. ok when I speak japanese that probably sounds rude and ignorant and...

R: ah not that bad, your very very very good.

M: No no

R: because we just talked about when you're talking in japanese I feel, you know, its like... No I said, as soon as you started to speak in english you sounded very mature. I just wanted to repeat myself because we were not recording (at that time)

M: Thats fine thats fine. Yeah, I actually feel when I speak english there is more clear thought process going on in my brain cause I think I can organize what im saying. better than when I speak japanese or chinese.

R: What about when you talk in Chinese?

M: Say that again?

R: Chinese?

M: Yeah I speak chinese with my parents.

R: Is it also like that or english is the best or easiest for you?

M: Year, and the thing is in China there are different dialects so mandarin is the chinese but in reality there is not language thats called chinese right, so there is mandarin, but mandarin is spoken only in for example in the Beijing area or it is a standard.

R: What about you, and your parents?

M: My area we speak a different type of dialect which is actually more calm so its not like with a lot of changing tones like tong tong tong tong tong no no no its not like that.

R: So its kind of like danish.

M: Ya, exactly, exactly so I also sound more quiet and relax(ed) when I speak my dialect. but its always challenge when i talk to my parents. about my work for example, also school cuz I've had my you know secondary and tertiary education in english. So a lot of words a lot of terminologies in english. So I usually, thankfully, thanks to technology I usually open up my smart phone with online dictionaries so if had words that i dont know what to say then I just put them into the dictionary then I know ok, hi mom look, this is what i was trying to say.

R: But they understand pretty much english dont they?

M: My mom doesn't speak very good english cuz she has been a housewife since we lived abroad. and my dad speaks ok english but its been a while since they moved back. You know language is something you have to practice in order to keep remembering. its been some years since they moved back so they dont really speak english that well any more. I would say chinese or the dialect are preferred language at home.

R: Maybe we can just talk a little.. like.. I dont know....maybe I can ask you about your work. Just to start with.

M: Ok, thats fine.

R: What do you do?

M: Im a project manager, working in a pharmaceutical company, in a division called medical affairs. That is a division that creates the link between R and D and also marketing. So in my daily life what do I do - its difficult to explain int the simple language. I do a lot of strategies before a product is launched in the markets so we call it launch-preparation. And I also do a publication strategies and engage with KOL skill opinion leaders because there are so many experts in different fields. and before you launch a product in the markets and you need to engage with doctors and educate them with the products merits and clinical benefit and also the value, it brings to the patients. I hope that make sense.

R: Sounds pretty complicated, maybe for us whos not working in that field. but sounds interesting, still.

M: Thank you. You are welcome to ask me more questions. I can explain to you a little bit more, its always difficult to explain in the simple sentences and I guess if I had really explain very quickly that probably means i was not able to explain well enough because it is a complicated issue.

M: Im good. My name is Mian Im half Chinese half Mongolian, I was born in china but I moved abroad when I was little so I actually lived in Japan for come years until junior high and I moved to the US. 6 years ago I moved to Denmark and now Im living and working here and like it a lot.

R: How long have you been in the US?

M: From high school to university, I worked there for a year, so 9 years?

R: 9 years. What about your mother tongue?

M: Yeah its a very difficult question, As you can see my life is pretty fractured to different places so I never really get to settled one place and really learned language very well so I would say.. yeah I speak English, I speak Chinese, and speak Japanese and a little bit Danish. Maybe I speak english the best. I guess.

R: And some mongolian as well, right?

M: Yes a little bit mongolian but the level is very low, its very basic I usually quarrel with my grandparents when I speak mongolian.

What is a saint, anybody know what a saint is?

A saint is a human being we celebrate for their

commitment and dedication to other human beings,

for the sacrifices that they make, for their

hard work in making the world a better place

for those around us and for

those who will follow them.

 

I imagine the best way to tell

you who Mr. Vincent McKenna is

is to tell you what he's done for me.

When me and my mom first moved here,

we knew no one.

And Mr. McKenna took me in.

When he didn't have to, and most likely, didn't want to...

but he did it anyhow, 'cause THAT'S what saints do.

We visited his wife, Sandy, of 40 years, who recently passed away.

Vin's done her laundry EVERY week for the past 8 years long after she no longer recognized it.

saints never give up.

He taught me how to fight, how to stand my

ground and be brave, how to speak up and be bold.

Because saints fight for themselves and

others, so that they might be heard.

This is Vin's cat, Felix, who eats

gourmet cat food while Vin eats sardines.

'Cause saints make sacrifices.

Yes, Mr. Vincent McKenna is flawed,

seriously flawed,

But just like the all the

other saints we studied,

because, after all, saints

Yeah, I guess it was the right time for me to have new experiences.

And you are actually traveling pretty far.

Where are you going?

Yes, yes, another continent. I decided for the first time to visit south america.

and starting in Brazil. and I fly in february this year.

Pretty soon! I will miss you.

And the reason you travel is I think pretty interesting so maybe.. let me hear a little more about your travel.

It´s because I have studied amongst other about social entrepreneurship and sustainability which is something I would like to discover much more on a ... how can you say...like.. I would like to live sustainability. not just be able to talk about theoretically but live sustainability so Im very interested in permaculture, which is kind of... it´s something that has been developed in Australia. And it´s about how we can get inspired by nature, the way ecosystems work, in order to design better... many aspects of our lives.
