  • 40: The Career Girls Murders & the 1963 Zodiac Back

On today’s episode, Valerie tells the heartbreaking story of the murders of Emily Hoffert and Janice Wylie in their 3rd floor Manhattan apartment, on the same day that Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. She outlines the exhaustive search for a suspect by New York’s 73rd precinct, the details of the eventual case against an unlikely young man, and how the historic events of that day helped crack the case for good. Next, Amy Jo presents the positions of the outer planets for 1963 and what some of those aspects may have meant for those living through our year. We reflect on some of the Zodiac Back lessons we’ve learned throughout Season 1 and finally Amy Jo tells us what we can expect in the month of September. Thank you for listening to Season 1. We love you, and we ain’t a’woofin!

  • 39: 1963 Timeline Twist & The Mysterious Deaths of Dr. Bogle and Mrs. Margaret Chandler

On today’s episode, Valerie presents the very special JFK heavy Timeline Twist for 1963, including troubling conflicts in Vietnam, notable moments in the US Civil Rights Movement, the introductions of Colt 45 malt liquor and the Easy-Bake Oven, Pop Art, a new Canadian TV show with a title as sad as a handmade pine needle, the emergence of The Beatles as international superstars, and a discussion on some of the wilder JFK assassination conspiracy theories. Next, Amy Jo tells the puzzling story of two bodies found near Fairyland in New South Wales, Australia on New Years’ Day in 1963. She recounts how a tabloid newspaper war of the time exploited the story’s elements of nudity, sex, and adultery, and how the mystery deepened due to the strange way the bodies were covered (a fact only resolved with a deathbed confession).  The deaths were labeled “unnatural” until a 2006 documentary uncovered new details, a third-hand eyewitness account, and eventually a surprising, but mostly natural, culprit.

  • 38: The Witchcraft Murder of Clothilde Marchand & the 1930 Zodiac Back

On today’s episode, Valerie covers the intriguing story of philandering sculptor, Henri Marchand, who had a habit of charming young native women into his studio, out of their clothes, and into his bed, claiming “professional necessity”. She recounts the salacious details that came out after the murder of his artist wife Clothilde, including witchcraft, Ouija boards, and mysterious letters from Cleveland, and how the trials did little more than shed light on his narcissism, master manipulation, and coercion to murder? Amy Jo’s Zodiac Back presents all things Pluto, starting with a quick run-down of Pluto facts. Next she tells the story of the search for the elusive Planet X, which made itself known by perturbing other bodies in the night sky. It includes a delightful Kansas connection, resulting in Pluto’s discovery as the 9th planet (Yay!), it’s demotion to a dwarf planet (Boo!), and how it was caused by astronomers defining what a planet even is! She rounds out the ZB with info on the Mars conjunct Jupiter in Gemini which is happening today!

  • 37: 1930 Timeline Twist & The Tragic Life of Carl Panzram

On today’s episode, Valerie’s 1930 Timeline Twist covers Harry Matthews’ delightful Sky Projector AND his “dangerous” death ray, the inspiration and family scandal connected to famed Grant Wood painting American Gothic, Valerie indulges her love of Art Deco architecture, and we learn the 1930 Watkins Cookbook recipe for Macaroni Loaf - we hear it’s better with bacon! We discuss the history of the Snickers Bar, and reveal the magical secrets of Popular Science’s Spiritphone. Next, Amy Jo tells the devastating life story of serial killer Carl Panzram. It’s a story that truly illustrates how a killer is made, including an abusive and violent childhood, his dangerous life on the rails, multiple stints in an Are You New? style list of jails and prisons across the globe, his many, many escapes, and how he might have FINALLY found an ounce of peace at the end of his life, even writing his own memoir before his execution.

  • 36: The Mysterious Death of Jane Stanford & 1905 Zodiac Back

On today’s episode, Valerie tells the story of the unsolved murder of Jane Stanford, a tale including the founding of Stanford University (a beautiful tribute to her beloved late son), a rivalry with college president David Star Jordan, a university spy named Goebel, two poisonings, and a cover up that nearly buried the truth forever. Valerie outlines the popular suspects, as well as evidence uncovered by authors in recent years which helped bring to light the uncomfortable truth about Mrs. Stanford’s death. Next, Amy Jo’s Zodiac back details what the outer planets were up to in 1905, and for the first time ever we discuss an inner planet. Mercury! And yes, we discuss the most well known (and dreaded?) detail about it - Mercury Retrograde! But fear not. Amy Jo breaks down what Mercury Retrograde is, and how to get through it. Next, she presents German physicist Albert Einstein’s 1905 burst of revolutionary and consequential ideas, known as his Year of Miracles. Seriously, who doesn’t love Albert Einstein!?!?
