Unique, gripping, and emotional.

The Rythamancer is unlike anything I have read (or listened to) before. Nathan Beck introduces us to a world of music and magic that is subtle and echoes a story much larger than this one tale. Not only is it compelling in its universal quest to find meaning and loose oneself in accomplishments, but it also gives the listener insight into the magic of creation and the beauty of composing music firsthand.

Alex Freedman delivers the work with skill and provides a perfect setting to experience this work. His skill with voices and flow made listening to this short quite possibly more enjoyable than simply reading.

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend. And if you haven't already started, please write more in this series!

Amazing short story... would love a series

I Love This Story... It's complete and yet I want more! It feels like a series could easily come from it. Can't wait to hear the next book.

The language after the opening built anticipation and felt so natural to the character. I could see the story play out in my mind's eye and when that happens both writer and voice character have created something special. Thank you.

Makes you think...

I was given this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All in all this was a pretty good read. It jumps around a lot making it a little confusing but also really makes the reader think about things. I would recommend giving it a listen.

A book that leaves you scratching your head.

If you could sum up Foy in three words, what would they be?

I received a copy of this audiobook from the producer in exchange for an objective review. I started listening to it and was a bit perplexed as to the nature of the story, so I did a very quick perusal of some of the reviews already posted. While I didn't read them carefully, my overall impression was that many people weren't in love with it. I kept listening, and by about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way through, I was so very, very happy I had chosen to keep with it. I found the voice (i.e. the protagonist's voice) refreshing and honest, and I could relate on a personal level to many of the thoughts expressed in the text. But then I got to the end of the "book," and I was a little put off by the change of course, as the last chapter deviated drastically from what had come before. And then there were two additional pieces that followed, that were not part of the "book," but were part of what the author wanted to share with the reader/listener. These, too, were very different from the part of the book I had found so touching. The end of the production included a promise that a second volume of the book would be out soon, but I am a bit wary as to which part of the "book" that refers to. What I enjoyed and could relate to was the story of a minister at a turning point in his career. He was raised in the church and his path in life seemed preordained (pardon the pun). However, he comes to doubt and then refute so much of the pablum that had been fed to him since birth, and he leaves the ministry and attempts to build a life for himself in the real world. All of that part of the story came across as sincere, heartbreaking, and wise. Then there's a redemptive (?) chapter at the end that is out of the time sequence and left me confused and a bit miffed. The author apparently has had an active online following for years and (I believe, as I have not checked) is still a Christian minister. He was and is a stranger to me, though, and given my mixed reaction to the book, will probably stay that way.

Mesmerising! Absolutely brilliant!

I was intrigued at first and not quite sure what to make of the book but as it went on I became more and more engrossed. I found it so interesting to see things from Jinny's point of view and to see how frustrating it was for her that people don't understand but then also it showed so well how difficult it was for her family and teachers. Absolutely brilliantly written and very moving. An excellent listen!

Delightful Stories

An outstanding collection of stories with memorable characters and engaging story lines. Each author has put their personal stamp on their story and each one left a definite impression. I especially enjoyed this book because it had stories by authors I have come to know and enjoy, namely, Sharon Kleve, Jennifer Conner, Chris Karlsen and Angela Ford. It was also good to be introduced to authors I hadn't read in the past. I can honestly recommend this collection and am impressed that it has been published for such a good cause. I really wanted to enjoy the narrator, however with so many mispronunciations, no female voices and failed attempts at accents it was difficult to enjoy him. I did persist though since the stories were so good. All I can say is that he did have a pleasant voice and did an okay job and that this is just my personal opinion.

I am enjoying the book.

Reconciling the past and the present

Flesh and Bone and Water tells a big story in a small way. The novel is a family drama, focusing on one family member and the harm he inadvertently does to his family and future by falling in love.

André Cabral receives a letter from Luana in Brazil. Now living alone in a London flat after separating from his wife, André has not seen Luana in 30 years. He cannot remember her last name, but the letter prompts memories of his Brazilian childhood.

Luana was the daughter of his familyâs black maid/nanny. Most of the novel is told in memory: André and his brother Thiago growing up in Rio; their motherâs death; a family visit to Belém, accompanied by Luana; Andréâs introduction to Esther, his eventual wife, as he attends medical school in London; the deterioration of their marriage as âtime rubs away the shineâ of love.

Most of the backstory involves Andréâs forbidden infatuation. Luana is the daughter of a servant and not a fit mate for a boy who will one day become a doctor. But Luana is wrong for André for additional reasons that he does not understand at the time. Eventually, as more letters arrive, André learns a devastating truth about his past.

The story is told in quiet, straightforward prose.

Excellent Read

The subject of suicide always seemed dark to me yet held a certain fascination as well. Someone suggested I read The Little Black Book of Suicide Notes to gain a new and interesting insight into a world that I shied away from. Well, this book rocked it out. It's taken the subject to an entirely new level of thought, It's part shocking, part humor, and most of all truth at it's core. I'm looking forward to continuing the journey, as it is book one of a proposed trilogy.

Brave effort!

I bought the first version of this that was poorly edited. I read it then. In spite of myself, I was pulled into the story quickly.

Bless her heart, I thought Caryn was so WHINY. I understood her feeling cheated because her husband died young. I understood her feeling of confusion when her brother David came out. But she made everything about her, and that was not cool.

"When you first told me, I was more worried about being the sister of a gay brother than your being gay.." I was struck by this statement, and it seemed quite true. Caryn makes a comment at some point that she was surprised that her brother seemed to have a closer relationship with God than she did. She said she didn't want to be the one who pulled the rug out from him by telling him he was not going to heaven.

Where was she in her relationship with God? In no place to judge. I'm glad she finally figured that out. Her brother was the same person he was 10 minutes before he told her he was gay. How did she come to her beliefs? Dad wanted to send David (a grown man) to a reformation camp. She was just believing what she had been taught. Those beliefs didn't seem to be part of her.

I like books that make me think. This one does just that...

Christa Allen does a great job at drawing a reader in to someone else's world. I couldn't tell you how many times I paused to think about the main character's internal thoughts while reading this book. I really felt bad for her being widowed so young, and being a single mom of a son, and then feeling like she'd lost her brother, when in reality she hadn't. She just lost her image of him and had to reframe everything she'd believed about him.

I loved how the character questioning her assumptions made me think about my own. Especially when it comes to stereotypes. That Lady Gaga reference even made me laugh out loud while I was reading. The weird thing is that this story hit a bit close to home for me because right after my kids went to college last year (like literally the first month they were there) some guys were beaten up pretty badly and two were put in the hospital just because they were gay. The attackers knew this because they caught them leaving a "coming out" type party. That was scary for me because it happened where my kids went to school, and in a pretty "liberal" college town. It can happen anywhere. Hate crimes still happen and they are always wrong. Just like rape is always wrong. Great points there.

Also good points about how knowing something about someone shouldn't make you love them any less. Granted, no one wants to think about what people do privately, but it's true that one of the first things people think about is sex. But we don't think that about other people when we first meet them, right? Good thoughts. Also good ones regarding judging. Only God knows the persons heart and where they really stand with him. It's not our job to decide who He accepts and who he doesn't.
