Thought provoking story

There are many good books that you read or listen to, truly enjoy, and forget the next day. That book is not one of them. It is a slow story about normal people, quite dark and sad, but it didn't leave me with a bad feeling. Bad things exists, we can't deny it, but sometimes good people are born from the ashes of a ruined life.

Listening to the audio version was a pleasure. I loved the calm and clear voice of the reader, and she was good with different voices and situations. I normally prefer the audio version of a book, and this time I didn't regret it!

Can't wait to read the next book!

Great book! You hang on through all of the turmoil this 16 year old endures! Emotional, deep and definitely relatable! I can't wait for next two in the trilogy!

I want to say, I recommended this book to our high school librarian yesterday and it has been ordered.

A book of fiction that is so well written the listener will feel if they are listening to someones memoir. The characters come to life and you either love or hate most of them. I kept my fingers crossed and hoping the young protagonist would overcome the hand she was dealt. I will look for more from this author.

The narration was well done.The characters were well portrayed. Jennifer Reilly brought each character off of the page and into the world.

Worth the Effort?

Wildly inventive with some haunting imagery that will stay with me for a long time. I found it easy to get into at first but after putting the book down for a few days it was a real struggle to get back into the flow. By the end I just wanted it to be over. There are presumably many deep meanings to be found in this story for those with the time and inclination to look, but for the average reader it is nonsensical and also quite repetitive in some ways (it will be a long time before I care to read anything with swans in it).

There's no doubt Alexis Wright is an amazing writer, but I'm not completely convinced that there's more to this book than a surreal and rambling plot interspersed with some very sharp observations about politics and history. It was these observations that made me wish for more coherence. That might just be my taste and I'd probably say the same thing about Ulysses if I ever got past the first page, but I read somewhere that Wright was also inspired by William Faulkner who I love because underlying his stream-of-consciousness writing is a strong sense of character which I felt this book lacked.

It does have genuine pathos in parts and I really appreciate the effort to meld stories from legend and myth with an Indigenous sensibility, which I found very effective, but ultimately I was left wondering if it is worth the effort for the layman to slog through this beautiful but dense prose. I'd love to find a really detailed review or analysis that explains this book but so far I've only found very general comments about climate change and politics that don't tell me anymore than I already know.

Great "coming-of-age" read in the vein of Stephen King's The Body

Wow! What did I just read?! I'm still trying to process it.

I "met" Chad on Facebook. Say what you will about social media, but I've had the pleasure of meeting some very talented authors that really need more exposure than they've been getting. Chad is most certainly one of them.

James Newman tagged this book as "...one of the best dark coming-of-age tales..." and I certainly agree. It's reminiscent of Stephen King's The Body, only dealing with an individual, not a group.

As a Scout leader, I work very closely with young boys and understand their thoughts and fears better than most people. I can say that Chad hit the nail on the head with his treatment of Denny. His thought process is exactly that of a pre-teen, and his actions were spot on.

You need to ask yourself just how far are you willing to go to finally look after yourself no matter how many people, family included, don't believe in you.

I don't know if I would really call this a "dark" tale. It most certainly is a coming-of-age tale, and I have to agree that it's one of the best I've ever read.

I'll certainly be checking out some of Chad's other works.

Quiet horror in this coming of age story...

We have a genuine masterpiece here and Iâm so glad Iâve has the pleasure to read the work of this very talented author.

If you want to be blessed by an emotional moving story, you have to read the tale of a young boy whose hopes and dreams are about to be dashed by a non-loving, alcoholic mother and the intervening finger of fate. The 12-year-old boy, Denny, lost his father several years ago, left to be raised by his neglectful and perpetually boozed up mother. Denny's dad had one time won a 'spelling bee' at his hometown school and Denny cherished the ribbon award as a great memory from his father. Denny never entered the spelling bee himself because of lack of confidence and drive.

Have you ever read a synopsis and thought, I need to read this now, and I don't care that I have 54 other books waiting on my Kindle... I'm buying and reading this RIGHT NOW? That was me with this book. I was very intrigued by the synopsis. I loved how unique the premise was and I was really excited to dive in! *Side note: I did have a mini panic attack at the $10 ebook price :o But I decided to buckle down and take a chance on it anyway. And I. Regret. Nothing.

The story begins with Elsa in her coma and Thibault visiting his brother who is currently a patient on the same floor. His brother was driving drunk, killing two teenage girls and injuring himself, landing him in the hospital. Thibault is furious at him and when he brings his mother to see his brother, Thibault refuses to see him. He accidently stumbles into Elsa's room and soon seeks refuge there every time he brings his mom.

This was such a beautiful read. I'm not sure how it works when it's a translation. Do you credit the author? The translator? Both? Well, to whoever gets the credit, you did a fanfreakingtastic job!! I just loved how lyrical it was.

Very believable story and not all luvvy duvvy although lovely

I really did enjoy this book. Believable characters with believable stories. Maybe I loved it even more as it starts in Italy and the main male character loves Italian cooking, plus there are a few Italian words thrown around. It is just a really nice easy book to listen to even though I am sure it will hit a few chords with some people for some of the storylines. Very believable and thoroughly enjoyable. Looking out for the next one now!

Love story

A beautifully written love story which was tender and touching and also funny at times....would make a great film and will appeal to any die hard romantics and lovers of one day /the versions of us/sliding doors. Maybe ending a bit predictable but definitely a great listen

An exceptional read in every way. Believeable, likeable characters with exceptional descriptions. wonderful humour, intelligent observations. Best novel I have read in a very long time and I read at least 2 a week. I look forward to the next from an author who has obviously lived an interesting life.

Very Sweet Story

This is a very sweet story about cats and adoption. The narrator does a great job in pulling you into the story and characters. I enjoyed the excerpts on owning a used book store and buying, collecting and restoring old books. It's a good listen for younger children or cat lovers of all ages!

WONDERFUL STORY

Kathleen M Rogers is a wonderful storyteller. I cried tears of joy and sorry listening to Leslie Ellis reading JOHNNIE COME LATELY. This story will stay with you long after you read or listen to it. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the sequel.
