They chose their own roads, but they couldn't change their destination....
Twenty years ago, Vanessa Massey couldn't wait to graduate from high school and make her small hometown of Danton Hill a distant memory - despite an indelible friendship she'd recently forged. But life has largely ignored her plans, and time has summoned her back to the shores of Lake Ontario for a school reunion that could change everything.
After four years as Danton Hill High's resident outcast, Adam Blackburn went on to a successful career in New York City. Yet now he's drawn homeward for a reunion he's surprisingly curious to attend - if he and his car survive the fierce summer storm that's hit. Adam always hated storms and their destruction. And sure enough, he soon collides with another vehicle in the blinding rain. But it turns out the driver is the one person he'd hoped to see: Vanessa.
Reunited by Mother Nature, the two take shelter in an abandoned farmhouse where they are forced to decipher their unresolved history. Together, they'll unravel the twists of fate that have brought them to the present - and discover the remarkable truth that may carry them through the future....

Contemporary romance with a paranormal twist
This book has a lot of descriptions and lots of details throughout. I found the story slow paced and it was hard to keep focused. The story went back and forth between past and present. There were more secrets than I expected it and the paranormal twist caught me by surprise, not my favorite conclusion...
The narration was ok but there was not much difference between characters.
It was a unique love story with some mystery woven in. I felt like the story dragged on and on. The tale of previous lovers separated by death and expecting to meet again in another lifetime was different than what I'm used to.
The book was well written but perhaps just not for me. I prefer a much faster paced book.
**This audiobook was provided free of charge in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion**
Love Stands the Test of Time
Would you listen to Beyond the Storm again? Why?
I was already thinking about listening to this again because the story goes back and forth in time quite a few times and I know I may have missed some of the important parts.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Beyond the Storm?
It's difficult to give a good review without spoiling the book for others. There are quite a few memorable moments in this book but I enjoyed the conversations between Vanessa and Adam as they began to unravel the wonderful mysteries of this story.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Vanessa and Adam discovered the old trunk with all of the letters from the past they read them to each other in a romantic way. I got cold chills listening to the love letters from the past
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Love You Now and Then and Forever
    Any additional comments?
I was given this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I loved this story and I can't say enough about how the ending took my breath away. The love story told here is the most poignant I've ever read. Thanks so much for this gift.
    Beyond the Storm

    3.5 stars
This was completely different from what I was expecting. How to describe this story without giving too much away. A well written, engaging and entertaining story.

A Book about Wings and Hearts.
From the moment I started reading this book I was off on a very unique adventure. An adventure of maturity. intrigue and true love.
From the first page to the last page the author made me feel I was there too. Very few books have a quick pace and a sense of the emotions and moods of the characters. What a brave young boy who became a strong minded man. Where we would hide behind our mother's apron strings he was forced to take on the world. Also it's a love story based on a combination of miracles. Well written and a very emotional book. This is a must read. I already miss the book and will read it again to recapture the spellbinding moments.
Julian is certainly not a typical Cuban immigrant.
Where do I begin to evaluate this exceptional novel? There are so many facets to this journey that it is hard to zero in on all of them. But I'll give it a try: Julian's boyhood was rife with rejection and yes, abuse from his very own parents. Yet, he still had love and respect for them and tried to please them in every way. The author gives us a clear picture of life in pre-Castro Cuba with humor was well as clarity. But we also learn of the terrible effects of Castro's policies on the Cuban people though the eyes of a teenage boy who is sent out of the country--not so much for his own survival but to protect his family's wealth. Somehow, Julian survives many obstacles, showing us how fortitude in his adopted country makes him a success. This novel has it al! it is a page turner filled with mystery as well as good laughs, believe it or not. Highly recommended by this reader who appreciates fine writing.
a compelling story and beautifully written
What a book. Could not put it down since I wanted to known what happens to Julian on his life journey. The writer made me understand more fully the fear and suffering of the Cuban people during the Cuban Revolution. Julian definitely overcame adversity as well as being hopeful for a bright future. There were parts of the book that broke my heart and parts that made me laugh. In fact there were some situations in the story that made me laugh and feel like crying at the same time. Hats off to the author for writing a beautiful story.
Superb work by author Beverly Gandara
A great novel! Suppressed passion entangled with the taboo canons of an epoch, this story hits a nerve on so many levels-both personally and socially. When desperate situations call for desperate measures, a young man beats the odds not only against circumstances he encounters along the way but also against that notorious time in history of his birth country: a time of turmoil and uncertainty. This story is not only inspiring, but humbling as well for we must never forget the past. Superb first novel by Beverly Gandara! Looking forward to many more!
A rich and satisfying first novel... a must read!!

    Publisher: Kim Vogee
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Inspired by real-life events, author K. Hamilton artfully combines the elements of a Western with the 21st century. Paths intersect and twist from Silicon Valley, to Colorado, to the wide-open spaces of the high desert of the Three Corner country of Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. Three Corner Rustlers is a contemporary story featuring an estranged daughter, Carson, who is returning to her childhood home; CJ, an ex-con whose life is changed by an unusual mentor a wild mustang named Rio; plus a criminal network of cattle thieves, federal agents, and a rancher whose livelihood is threatened. The journeys of these characters are woven together in this modern-day tale to surprising conclusions.
    Members Reviews:
Exciting to the end with more surprising twists
A modern day Western complete with cattle rustlers, mystery and deadly danger if the rustlers are discovered! Someone is stealing cows and bankrupting ranches on the three corners of Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. The rich mixture of characters makes this story well-rounded. Each character is well developed. Each character connects to the plot and others are solidified through the action.
The characters range from a waitress with a shady secret, a recently released convict with an affection for his unique wild Mustang, federal agents, thieves, a lonely old man and many more. A small group of ranch hands go out to look for missing cattle and find so much more than they bargained for!
Hamilton builds her characters with a depth that makes them realistic. Her female characters are strong although they are not the center of attention, she highlights them in ways that make them appear strong and tough.
Exciting to the end with more surprising twists and turns than the Rio Grande! Author K. Hamilton does an excellent job of keeping the listeners interest making this audio a unique experience. Known for her ability to make her books visual through words, Hamilton does not disappoint. There were numerous times that I felt I was on the range riding with CJ, Ryker as well as being in the center of the story with Dale, Shiloh, and others.
Hamilton is a gifted writer and her strength lies in her ability to weave a story with intricate connections that one does not notice at first. Although inspired by real events, Hamilton is the perfect author to make this book more exciting than real life.
There is a violent rape in the story.
I do enjoy Hamiltons other books and was excited to see her demonstrate her flexibility in other genres. Excellent book! It is an awesome listen! A definite must read!
The narrator, John Pirhalla did an excellent job performing the book. He spoke clearly and with ease. His voices were well done and with enough voice to keep the attention of the listener. I enjoyed his performance and look forward to hearing more by him.
There were no issues with the audio production of this book. However, the few times they added in sound effects were not impressive - I really did not enjoy hearing a character eating.

    More than a YA novel
This was a fantastic book that I found myself wishing was longer (thankfully there are two more set to be written in the series). It's geared for young adults, but I don't know that it's fair to pigeon-hole it in that category. Anyone who has had a best friend growing up and then met a new friend who turned things upside down can relate to this plot. I found myself pulling for the best friends to get back together, and even though I hated the antagonist, I found myself feeling bad for her because she is a product of her upbringing. I could feel the excitement when the town had the 4th of July party. After this novel I find myself wanting a pygmy goat, too. There's something about the innocence of young best friendships that strikes a note in my heart. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Abby and Emma. Even what awaits Gretchen, too.
    Great mother/daughter read together book
Love reading with our 11 year old daughter and this was perfect!
    Daughter says...
It is a beautiful book with heart and meaning. The story, itself is happy and sad at the same time. I absolutely loved it. You should definitely read it!
A super read for the young and the young at heart.
A wonderfully written book especially pre-teens and teens. A great book to read to your grandchildren too. My girls are ready for the next book in the series
    "Surviving Gretchen"
"We're going to have the best summer ever Emma said, still trying hard to contain herself but not really succeeding as she was now jumping up and down again, her long brown hair flapping all around her. A few kids stifled laughter as they walked by, but Emma was oblivious. "Indeed we will," Abby said, amused by her friends antics."........
Emma and Abby are the best of friends. Their families and siblings close. The summer is just beginning and they have lots of fun planned. Nothing can come between them, except maybe Gretchen. Poor Gretchen is nothing but a knock off of her mother. Over dressed, without feeling, snobby, and as self centered as they come. Petty and jealous of Abby and Emma's close friendship. She tries to insert herself between them.
Thirteen year old girls can't grasp the future and the outcome of bad choices. Gretchen has no problem being ugly on the inside. How far will she go to get Emma away from Abby, so that she can have Abby to herself?
Abby's kindness towards Gretchen may cost things that can never be replaced. I loved the story line. I loved Emma's brother Keith, and his pet. Abby's little brother, Cameron, was also quite the character.

Christmas Livingstone has 10 rules for happiness, the most important of which is 'absolutely no romantic relationships'.
In The Chocolate Apothecary, her enchanting artisan store in Tasmania, she tempers chocolate and creates handmade delicacies. Surrounded by gifts for the senses, in this shop chocolate isn't just good for you, it's medicine.
And then one day a stranger arrives at her front door - a disheveled botanist seeking her help. She really doesn't need Lincoln van Luc to walk into her life, even if he does have the nicest blue eyes, the loveliest meddling grandmother and a gorgeous newly rescued dog. She really doesn't need any of it. Or does she?
Set across Tasmania, Paris and Provence, this is a glorious novel of a creative woman about to find out how far in life a list of rules will take her, with an enticing tangle of freshly picked herbs, pots of flowers and lashings of chocolate scenting the air.

    Four Stars
Gentle nice story with very interesting information about the benefits of chocolate
    Delicious and romantic
Christmas is the owner of the Chocolate Apothecary. She loves working with chocolate and making people happy is what she likes best. Only, is she happy herself? She has a list of strict rules, a path that she needs to follow, so she'll never end up in that black hole again. The rules are giving her focus and she is content, so happy enough. When her best friend enrolls her in a chocolate making class in France Christmas is surprised and a bit nervous, but she can't wait to go. She's always wanted to visit France and it's supposed to be part of her inheritance. Her friends pressure her to find her father, but does she really want that?
Living by the rules is easy for Christmas as she has nobody special in her life. When Lincoln, a botanist who's writing a book about chocolate, asks for her help with his project Christmas gladly accepts. She likes him and he likes her, but that's not supposed to happen. Falling in love is not on the list and Christmas doesn't want to get hurt again. Plus she's going to France, so she has no time to fall in love. Lincoln is a handsome guy, he won't be around forever. Has Christmas made the right decision or has she made the mistake of her life?
I loved The Chocolate Apothecary. Reading about delicious food is a lot of fun, especially in combination with a wonderful story. Christmas is a fantastic heroine who does everything to bring other people joy and happiness. I liked her very much. Lincoln has always been able to lead a free live and to travel wherever his job brings him. It isn't easy for him to stay in one place. I liked seeing him transform and to see him grow up, even though that might have been a little bit late. He also has a fantastic grandma who sees it as her job to tell him the truth. The characters make this story really special.
This book is set in Tasmania and in France. I loved reading about both magical places. I recognized the places in France as I've been there and it was so much fun to read about them. I think Josephine Moon has captured their atmosphere very well. I really like the way she writes about food, tasting and feeling. I could smell the chocolate and taste the treats. This all made the story come to life so well.

Amazing Collection of Entertaining People and Their Stories
These books are so interesting and full of unusual details that you walk away really understanding the people that make their living on the sea. I love history and this certainly gave me so much to enjoy. I love the first hand accounts and the stories that bring it to life. The short stories were perfect for reading before bed. I kept staying awake to read more. This is just a wonderful collection.

A wonderful collection of stories, pictures, cartoons and news articles that should keep anyone busy for a few hours. Not every story will be for you, but there are so many that you can just skip over those.
For lovers of Steinbeck and Canary Row . . .
If you hunger for the tales of the Barbary Coast, made famous by John Steinbeck and his Canary Row novel, you will find yourself equally enthralled in this fine tome. If you have ever wondered what life is like in a New England-type town, with the curiosities that linger within, and fully-fleshed our character studies; living, breathing people leaping off of the page come alive for the reader. This is my first introduction to this author, but in seeing how well crafted his books are, I do not suspect that this will be my last turn of one of his pages.
    Wonderful bunch of stories!
These books are not what I expected but they are great! I didn't expect multiple authors and such diverse stories. And recipes! A story about a grandmother and a buggy ride and a story about the Wray brothers, one of whom made it to Hollywood and was in 4 episodes of Gunsmoke! And fish stories from catfish to shrimp to crabs to eel, reds, drum, flounder, etc. I will be listening to these books in my car when I need something that's not too long. Thank you, Ken, I really enjoyed these!
    Great Series To Read

    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful emotionally gripping tale
This is a wonderful book about love, achievement, sorrows and secrets, focusing on the lives of some very strong women, both in the past and the present. It was an emotional roller-coaster which left me drained but uplifted.
Australian author Mary-Rose MacColl weaves a compelling story of love, achievement, danger, friendship, family and memories from WWI France to contemporary Australia. Iris Crane is now in her late 80's and her life is filled with memories of her early times, especially of her brother Tom and her time as a nurse at a hospital in France during WWI. Her current life centres on Grace, her granddaughter, who Iris brought up when her mother Rose died in childbirth. Grace is an Obstetrician with a hectic life balancing the needs of a family of 3 small children with the demands of her profession.
In 1914 Iris travelled to France to find her 15 year old brother who had lied about his age and enlisted in the Australian army. Already trained as a nurse, in order to find Tom she volunteers to work in a hospital in France. On her way, 21 year old Iris meets charismatic Frances Ivens, a doctor who is setting up a field hospital to be run by women in the old abbey of Royaumont, north of Paris. Under the spell of Frances, Iris decides to work at Royaumont where she comes of age in an environment of loving companionship, hardship and the horrors of war which test her capabilities and strengths to the limit.
At Royaumont she meets the vivacious and outgoing Violet and their friendship and relationship decide the rest of Iris's life. In the present, one day Iris receives a letter from Violet, now in her 90's, to come to Royaumont again for a final reunion. This once again triggers her memories of the past and makes her face up once again to the secrets of her relationship with Violet and her brother Tom.
MacColl's well researched descriptions of life at Royaumont during the Great War are insightful and atmospheric. By moving from memories and descriptions of the past to the present day she builds a personal and family drama of almost epic proportions. It is not really a book with strong feminist messages, but it firmly addresses the challenges that women face both at the beginning of the century and in the present day.
This book has immediately gone into my list of best reads of 2012. Mary-Rose MacColl also joins my list of talented Australian authors.
    Below average war novel
Because my grandfather died in a hospital in France during World War I, I eagerly opened âIn Falling Snow,â which is set largely in a French hospital treating World War I wounded.
