During the Apostles’ Fast, many Orthodox Christians focus almost entirely on what they are removing: meat, dairy, eggs, oil, wine.
But what if the deeper question is not simply, “What am I avoiding?” but, “What am I actually receiving?”
In this episode, Dr. Michael Christian & John use nutrient pairings as a practical case study in one of the deepest patterns woven into creation: things are received in relationship.
We discuss why intake does not always equal utilization, how nutrient pairings like fat-soluble vitamins & fat, iron & vitamin C, broccoli & mustard powder, tomatoes & olive oil, shellfish & lemon, fermented foods, & turmeric & black pepper can support better nourishment during fasting seasons.
But this is not merely a nutrition episode.
From there, we move into the Orthodox theology of reception: fasting is never given by itself. The Church gives us fasting with prayer, almsgiving, forgiveness, silence, gratitude, worship, & ultimately communion.
Because the goal of the Fast is not deprivation.
The goal is to become more capable of receiving God.
