As we have seen in this final chapter of Romans, Paul begins wrapping up his letter with a list of names of those who have helped him in his ministry. This “hall of faith” of sorts is similar to the one found in chapter 11 of Hebrews. We saw that there is a place for women to serve, as well as couples (Priscilla and Aquilla). Today we will see that there is also a place in church service for the young folks. As a matter of fact, there is a place for each and every one of us to serve in the Kingdom! Join us today as we conclude our look at the “hall of faith” set forth by Paul in his letter to the Romans.

As we began to see yesterday, the final chapter of Romans contains a “hall of faith” of sorts that is similar to the one found in chapter 11 of Hebrews. In this list of faithful saints, Paul mentions many fellow believers who ministered – or served – alongside him in the churches. Remember that this ministry is not necessarily the ordained ministry, since there are many women and others listed who are not permitted to serve in the public worship as preachers or deacons. Nonetheless, there is a great place in the church for women, couples, youth, and others to minister, or serve. Join us today as we conclude our look at women who ministered, and move on to Priscilla and Aquilla, a couple who served mightily in the Kingdom of God.

As we draw to the close of Paul’s letter to the Romans, we find a long list of names of people who have faithfully helped him in his ministry. This “hall of faith” is reminiscent of the “hall of faith” we find in Hebrews 11, and lists many believers who ministered – or “served” – alongside Paul. This type of “ministry” is not necessarily the ordained ministry of preachers and deacons; in fact, these “ministers” include women, couples, and others who clearly are not permitted to serve in those offices. Nonetheless, we will see that there is a place for all to minister – or serve – in the churches, including women, couples, youth, and ultimately everyone, young and old alike. Join us today as we begin this sermon, focusing primarily upon the role of sweet Sister Phebe and the women who served with Paul in the churches.

As we began to see in the first half of this sermon, there are certain aspects of ministry that apply to all children of God. “Ministry” simply means “service,” and it is clear in these closing verses of Romans 15 that Paul is not talking about the call to preach, but rather the type of service all children of God should pursue. In the first half of this message, we began looking at the ministry of giving. Today, we conclude our examination of this ministry, and move on to see that there is also a ministry of praying and a ministry of presence. Members of Christ’s church should be praying for their preachers and one another, and they should be attending the services whenever the church meets. We learned that His purpose was to fulfill the “promises made unto the fathers,” which most Jews of His day misunderstood. They thought it meant the elevation of the Jewish nation to political prominence, when in truth it meant bringing the Gentiles into the fold.
